I am a huge lover of Halloween and I thought this would be a book that I would really like because it combined Halloween and New Orleans together. New Orleans has always been known for its occult history.
I did enjoy this book as it has an interesting pull around the occult, cults, Halloween, and kidnapping. These are all topics that I feel set a book up for a good mystery. It was a little slow in its actual hook to pull me in though but once Sarah Booth and Frankie hit the ground in New Orleans things actually sped up.
I wasn't very fond of Jitty, Sarah Booth's ghost, in the story. I did not see how this character was relevant to the story and feel like if Jitty was removed that the story would have been fine. More often than not, I found myself scanning over the parts of Jitty. I have nothing against ghosts, I just didn't find her relevant.
There is also a lot of focus on Maylin, the new baby that was born, and I felt like there was too much focus on the baby near the beginning and at the end. Honestly, the end of the story felt very drawn out. It could have ended at least a chapter before it actually did.
Rating: 3 out of 5 because I enjoyed the actual story around the People of Earth.
When Sarah Booth Delaney is hired by a friend of her mother's to find a missing daughter, she turns not to her partner Tinkie for help, but to Coleman Peters. Tinkie has had her baby and needs to be with her. Sarah Booth and Coleman head to New Orleans where Christa has disappeared. Once there she discovers another young woman is missing and her fate is unknown. Could the young women be part of a cult that promises eternal youth? Time is running out as Halloween approaches and the veil between the world and the afterlife thins. An interesting premise, but Sarah Booth has used up many of her nine lives in this book. Not sure what is next for her.
Unfornutely, Carolyn Haines disappoints me with "Lady of Bones". The subject matter did not suit well with me. Every author has a pooper!
This is book 24 of the Sara Booth Delany series. during a party, a woman, Freddie, Knocks at the door, distraught. PIs Sara Booth and her new mother partner, Tinkie, are determined to help her find her daughter, Christa, who has been missing for two days. Christa has been investigating women disappearing for the past five years in New Orleans. Are the disappearances related to the cult People of Eternity?
I liked the quirky and lovable characters. I only read the first book of the series before this one, and I definitely want to deep dive in the series to see character development (I would love to learn more about Jitty). The mystery is easy to figure out, but as in most of the cozy mysteries, the hunt is better than the reveal. This book is perfect for Halloween season.
I received an advance review copy for free from NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Lady of Bones by Carlyn Haines is the latest Sarah Booth mystery. It is almost Halloween and everyone is smitten with Tinkie's baby Maylin and are determined to make her first Halloween one to remember. A friend of Sarah Booth's mother arrives in need of help finding her missing daughter, who was on the trail of cult. With the clock ticking until Halloween, Sarah Booth and Coleman head to New Orleans to search.
I always look forward to catching up with Sarah Booth, Jitty and the gang.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Lady of Bones by Carolyn Haines was another fantastic page turner for me! Love the series and this fun Halloween story was right up here! Loved it!!
Fun funny and exciting. Tink is back! (A bit). Why are these women going missing for so many years? Sara Booth is on the case
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc
Another wonderful, anxiety-inducing, nail-biting adventure with Sarah Booth and her friends (and Tinkie's new baby!). I loved the setting of New Orleans and the addition of the crazy cult. The story kept me reading into the night and the twists and turns were surprising. Can't wait to see what they get up to next.
Book 24 of the series and it’s still entertaining and fresh. I love spending time with the Delaney Detective Agency. This is such a fun cast of characters. It’s Halloween and the agency takes the case of a missing journalist. Overall a fantastic addition to the series.

When I got my hands on the ARC of Lady of Bones I did the joy-joy dance. This series is one of the very best de-stressors in my library. Time spent with Sarah Booth Delany, Tinkie, Coleman and Sarah's family ghost Jitty is the best literary vacation.
It's Halloween and there is a knock at the door. On the doorstep is one of Sarah Booth's mother's friends, Frankie. She has a problem and has come to the Delaney Detective Agency. Over the past five years, always at Halloween, young women have gone missing in New Orleans and Frankie's daughter, a journalist investigating the disappearances, is missing. Did Christa find answers and are they connected to a cult in the Garden District? Called The People of Eternity, the cult has lots of connections and those might put Sarah Booth in danger. With Coleman taking Tinkie's place due to the recent birth of the adorable Maylin (see how long Tinkie will be able to stay on the side lines) they are joined by Frankie, CeCe and Millie to find the two missing women. As it's Halloween and no book in the Sarah Booth Delaney series can be worth reading without the input from Jitty, there is much humor to be enjoyed. Jitty is an awesome ghost and I'd love to meet her.
At the 24th book I can say this is a series that has yet to disappoint me. The mysteries are well plotted, the setting is perfect and the recurring cast of characters feel like friends. A series not to be missed.
My thanks to the publisher Minotaur and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
This is book 24 of the Sarah Book series- it seems like just yesterday that I read the first book in the series! This books takes a turn to NOLA, where it is Halloween time, making it the perfect setting for a mystery! This time though it's Coleman who teams with Sarah, as Tinkie is recovering from her baby's birth. Add in an odd cult, missing girls, and you have a swift little mystery, perfect for fans of the series, and newcomers alike
The latest Sarah Booth Delaney mystery is very well named as there are a few ladies in this story and several bones. First is Sara Booth’s live-in ghost who has no bones, Jitty, or her haint, as Sarah Booth often refers to her. If I remember correctly, Jitty is one of Sarah Booth’s ancestors and a spectral reminder that Sarah Booth’s biological clock is ticking and that she needs to get busy with that lawman of hers, Coleman. Jitty also delights in popping up in unusual locations in unusual forms to bring cryptic tidings from the great beyond. The mystery starts right away grabbing your attention when an old friend of Sarah Booth’s mama; Frankie Moore, someone who was Ethel Mertz to Libby Delaney’s Lucy Ricardo shows up on the doorstep. The ladies had a relationship not unlike that of Tinkie and Sarah Booth as partners of the Delaney Detective Agency. A missing daughter who was hot on the trail of a big story ends up missing days after her roommate disappears leaving behind a slew of suspects including a youth cult leader. On the eve of Halloween in the Big Easy, anything can happen, you can just feel it in your bones.
I received an ARC of, Lady of Bones, by Carolyn Haines. This is a spooky Halloween story. I really enjoyed this book, its quite a page turner.
Excellent whodunit set in New Orleans. There's ghosts, a cult, and so many twisty turns. But Sarah and her crew are on the case, and they always do their best to solve whatever mystery they're involved in. Fabulous addition to the series.
Many thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
Sarah Booth Delaney mysteries have a special place in my heart as I love Sarah, her group of friends, and the light touch of paranormal. There's always a lot of humour and you can feel the love of the writer for this places.
This is one of the best stories in this excellent series: there's plenty of twists, a complex plot, and a lot of secrets.
There's a lot of secrets and mysteries.
I missed a bit Zinnia but New Orleans is a magical place and it's a great background for this story.
The solid mystery, full of twists, surprised me till the end and was highly entertaining.
Can't wait to read the next story.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
It’s Halloween season in Mississippi as Sarah Booth and the gang gather to decorate and gush over Tinkie’s new baby, Maylin. Sarah Booth is just about to refresh the cocktails when she hears a knock on the door and opens it to find a woman named Frankie, distraught at the disappearance of her daughter Christa, a young journalist. Christa had been investigating the disappearance of young women in New Orleans over a five-year period—one every year around Halloween. Now Christa herself is missing, and Frankie fears it may be connected to a cult based in the Garden District, called People of Eternity. I always get excited when I get a chance to read about more adventures with Sarah and her cohorts! Entertaining with a well plotted mystery, this series just gets better with every book. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced readers copy for review.
Reading a book in this series is like visiting old friends. This one doesn't disappoint. I love the fact it takes place in New Orleans. And while I love the whole gang, it was nice to see Sarah Booth and Coleman working together. The mystery kept me guessing. I felt like I was right there with Sarah Booth. Another excellent story!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Lady of Bones is a great entry in this wonderful cozy mystery series. This time, Sarah Booth goes to New Orleans to investigate the disappearance of her mother's best friend's daughter. Coleman accompanies her, and Tinkie stays behind in Zinnia for most of the book. She still provides valuable help despite the fact that she is not on location with Sarah Booth for most of the book. I really liked the different dynamics for the investigation. It created a different atmosphere, but everything readers of the series love was present. The storyline was strong, and there are some twists happening that will appeal to readers. In all, a fantastic books whether you are a long-time reader of the series or a newcomer.
I received an ARC from #netgalley. A fun addition to the series, and the setting in New Orleans was a nice change of place from the Mississippi Delta. The mystery, a search for the truth of a human-trafficking ring, or maybe a cult, or maybe a scam? - was interesting with a touch of black magic and voodoo to make it creepy. A few slightly illogical plot points did not detract from the storyline or pace. Jitty is an important character in the series, but I personally find a little of her goes a very very long way, and the number of appearances in this book was just about right (I could have done with one fewer). Overall an enjoyable read with good character development - a pleasure for long-time fans and a good introduction to the series for a newcomer.
I love Carolyn Hanes books they are always fun, exciting and really grab my attention. I really enjoyed the story surrounding “Lady of Bones” - I thought it was unique and compelling. I honestly couldn’t put this book down and highly recommend it to anyone that likes cozy mysteries.
