A Brush with Love is a playful, slow burn romance that follows Harper and Dan as they navigate their dental school and their instant attraction to one another.
I wanted to love this one, as I felt there were some really great parts - a meaningful look at dealing with anxiety, in-depth talk about the dental industry and working in what can be a sexist profession. That tooth extraction scene made my jaw drop with how the client talked to Harper! The audiobook had dual narrators which helped immerse me in the story.
I just couldn’t get behind the instant love between the main characters, and then it was a weird pace of intense desire and it being shut down in the name of staying friends. Dan also bothered me at some points, saying he knows he doesn’t need to stick up for Harper but then doing it in multiple scenes.
Overall, this book fell middle of the road for me. I will definitely check out other books by this author as it was the instant love connection that I personally didn’t connect with.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advance audiobook!
This is a book after my own heart!! I absolutely LOVE when romance novels have a medical focus and this one did just that!! A woman striving to be a dentist, a man who is in dental school but unsure if its his true future. Could they be a good match?!
I thought this audiobook was wonderful! Harper was such a motivating person who strives to be the best. She suffers from anxiety which most of us in the medical field can truly relate to. I really enjoyed her character and appreciated how real she was. Dan was so swoon worthy and such a perfect book boyfriend!! Such a good guy who really does put everyone else in front of himself. I loved their meet cute and Just the overall way their relationship progressed. I loved the two together, and I was pleasantly surprised with the steam that was sprinkled throughout this one! Overall, I enjoyed it and I am glad I got the chance to read/listen to this one!
Tropes:
Slow burn
Friends to lovers
Kind of a miscommunication?
I had the audio book and I can barely tolerate the narrator, I'm not sure why it sounded extremely robotic. Not very enjoyable. The book was cute and I liked the anxiety thing. I felt like it was adorable and sweet and the snow kisses were cute. I felt like the chemistry was lacking a little atleast from harpers side. This was a cute typical romance and I enjoyed it but it wasn't the best thing in the world. Maybe had I had a physical copy I would've enjoyed it more.
This book was absolutely amazing. Harper is in dental school awaiting an oral surgery residency when she meets Dan, a first year dental student from a family of dentists. The thing is Harper lives and breaths dentistry, while Dan is enrolled out of guilt to uphold the family legacy. *sigh*
What unfolds is a love story, rich with wit and sarcasm, and an honest depiction of anxiety disorder. It story felt so organic and authentic. I was rooting for these 2 humans through all the highs and lows.
Sincere thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an advanced listener copy in exchange for an honest review.
For the book as a whole, I love it and gave it 4 stars (review can be found on goodreads as well as under the epub version of this book here on netgalley!)… but the audiobook was a miss for me.
The narration for Harper was fine but nothing special, but the narrator for Dan got me on my nervous. The voice for Harper was super cringy and grating and bothered me so much throughout the time I was listening to the story. I think a single narration would’ve been better!
Full disclosure - as usual, I went in to this book blind. Because of that I was expecting this to be artist based….because “brush” and I really thought that was paint on the cover. It’s toothpaste. They’re in dental school. So that threw me for a bit, but it was cute!
This book is incredibly freaking cute. It’s a rom-com, so of course it’s cute. I found myself laughing frequently as I listened to this. I also definitely relate to our main character - she’s amazingly relatable and I love her.
I received an advanced audio copy of this book from NetGalley and it is absolutely worth your time if you’re looking for a light, funny, rom-com!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 rounded up!
Seemed fitting today to share a cute Romcom - A Brush With Love. It is the story of 2 dental students, Harper and Dan, each with their own emotional baggage who literally bump into each other and sparks fly. Another adorable one that I loved. The dialogue was full of sharp, intelligent zingers and the romance was just so sweet. But what really captivated me was the very raw and honest way that Harper struggled with anxiety disorder. It was not sugar coated and yet it also showed how she was able to acknowledge her struggles, allowing her to accept help. And, another romcom with Jewish representation so cheers for that! All the hugs for this one and now I am off to go floss…
Thanks to @macmillan.audio for an advance copy of A Brush with Love by Mazey Eddings, out March 1st!
As someone who suffers from secondhand embarrassment, I felt immediately CRINGE at the antics and innuendos (So. Many. Dental. Innuendos.) of this book, but I was also immediately invested!
I loved Harper from page one: her relationships with her friends and her resistance to vulnerability were things I deeply relate to. Dan, of course, is adorable and also relatable, with his desire for approval and his feeing that he’s doing life wrong, somehow.
This romance has friendship and family and Jewish rep and mental health rep and holds space for grief and loss so skillfully. I’m already looking forward to picking up whatever Eddings writes next!
“I’m wrecked.” 😭😭😭
CW: grief (loss of a parent), car accident, generalized anxiety disorder, claustrophobia, estranged parental relationship. There’s a reader’s note about triggering content at the start of the book!
I really enjoyed this book a lot. I am someone who has extremely bad anxiety and I felt so much connection with the main character Harper. I’ve never really come across books that deal with anxiety in a character. I listened to the audio book version and I really enjoyed both narrators. I wasn’t sure I would love this book since it has to do with characters in the dental field but I was so wrong. It’s excellent! Dan and Harper are such the perfect pair! Harper’s friends were incredible as well. Thank you for portraying a character who has anxiety. I often feel the exact way Harper does in the book. I am also glad she decides for herself to get help and isn’t just forced into it. That was amazing. Also when she feels nervous about getting help because she is afraid of who she is without anxiety really hit me. I can’t wait to read more from this author. I could not put this book down and read it in one day!
*thank you to NetGalley for an arc of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel by Mazey Eddings. We have two POV(Harper and Dan) that I felt flowed nicely. Both have experienced tragedy and loss (although very different from each other). Both will eventually realize their need to face it through therapy. The novel opens with their meeting by chance (or rather by collision) and then takes us through a budding relationship that faces challenges. What I loved about this story is a strong, smart female lead in STEM that struggles with anxiety and trauma. She was real and imperfect and the author's description of anxiety disorder was authentic and vulnerable. The supporting characters were fun and likeable, although a couple of times I wanted to tell them to stop pushing Harper and understand her better. It's a good depiction of how those with anxiety struggle even within their safe friend groups however. I'll be anxiously awaiting Mazey's next book and recommend this debut.
Thank you NetGalley and MacMillian Audio for the ARC and opportunity to provide an honest review.
While I enjoyed the story line, I found the narrator to be boring. She had a rather monotone voice and did not lend much to the book. The story itself was fine.
Mazey Eddings debut with this friends to lovers slow burn romance is so sweet and so heartfelt. I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook and very much enjoyed the narration (except when the male narrator read in girl tone in his chapters, it felt harsh and mocking) I connected so deeply to Harper and her anxiety, and the pressure both main characters felt about their personal expectations. I absolutely loved the author tackling ableist and sexist remarks - being a woman in a male dominated industry is hard, and it doesn't help with 'older' people contribute to this (as seen in the story with an older male patient requesting a male dentist for a procedure) The supporting characters had depth and contributed a lot to the story lines. I did feel Dan seemed to give way more to Harper than she did to him, but I think living with anxiety is a big factor in this dynamic.
I am SO glad this had an epilogue! It's all fine and dandy knowing the couple are together at the end of a romance, but it is MUCH better with an epilogue that says where they end up - and this book delivered!! I look forward to reading future books by this author!
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley who allowed me to listen to this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Great story about finding love while dealing with the anxiety.
Highlights:
-Neurodiverse representation
-unique setting
- Great narration
I want to begin this review by stating that I am not the biggest fan of audiobooks. I often find they cause me to have a dampened connection with the characters and events in a story. I was given the opportunity to listen to the audiobook version of A Brush With Love by Mazey Eddings, and while it was an enjoyable story, I think I may have had a different experience if I had actually read a print copy of the text.
The story revolves around Harper and Dan, dental students at a school in Philadelphia. Harper is preparing for her residency. Driven, hardworking, and focus-oriented; Harper has no time for romance and no room for distractions. Enter Dan. Dan is a first year dental student who feels he is forced into the family legacy after his father’s death. His passion lies within finance, not dentistry, but he abandoned his blossoming career to attend dental school to make his mother happy.
Both Harper and Dan are fighting plenty of personal demons, and as their relationship begins to grow, some of those demons are what ultimately drive them apart. Fear not, though, this story follows the rom-com formula to a T! A happy ending will be had in the end!
I honestly wish I would have read this book rather than listen to it, but I still thought it was a cute and fun read with likable characters and a feel-good vibe. I give it 4/5 stars because I know I would have felt it was worthy of that rating had I read the actual book and not listened to the audiobook.
This was a great start with this author I loved this book so much. This book had me in tears and the dialogue is wonderful. I fully recommend this book to be people who enjoy witty comedy. I thought the way the author wrote about anxiety and grief accompanied by untraditional family dynamics was spot on. This is why I felt that this story is relatable and you should give it a try.
I want to start off by saying I listened to the audiobook of "A Brush with Love" and the narrators did a fantastic job. I honestly think I kept listening because of them. Overall, I wasn't really a fan.
The story just didn't click with me. I felt like Harper and Dan's love story was a little flat and I didn't really buy it past a physical connection. I also never really understood Harper's motivation to be a dentist. So her motivation/ drive was slightly confusing. (SPOILER: She claims it has to do with her Mom's death in a car crash, but I still don't understand how becoming a Dentist correlates. Since a Dentist would not have been able to save her Mom.) The mental health issues on both ends were slightly more interesting, but that doesn't really come into play until the second half and by then, I was not as invested.
Thank you, NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly as emotionally vulnerable as this book was, it was equally delightful. Harper and Dan are a lovely pair and I wanted nothing but happiness for the both of them. This book shed a lot of light on anxiety, familial obligations and stress. Most people can relate to something these characters experience and it was so refreshing to see them showcased in the book. Definitely different than most contemporary romances I read but that's what made me feel even closer to these characters.
In this romance we are following Harper and Dan navigate dental school while also dealing with trauma, mental health and sexism. It seems like a lot, but Mazey Eddings really dealt with each topic appropriately. I especially appreciate how anxiety was handled.
The audiobook was very enjoyable as both the narrators brought Harper and Dan to life! This was over a great read with only a few minor cringy parts of internal dialogue.
Thanks to Net Galley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC of A Brush With Love
This is a sweet and adorable romance. I love that this is about dental school students and the cover completely sells it. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrators were excellent. The female narrator, Emily Lawrence, conveys the perfectionist, anxiety ridden Harper perfectly. The male narrator, Vikas Adam, helps me picture Dan much better. Both of their voices fit the characters and their reading style was just right, I never drifted from the story. Instead I felt like I was watching a great movie unfold. I love that it is told in dual POV.
Harper is a dental student close to graduation. She is at the top of her class, and type A. Failure is not an option and when she feels out of control or feels like she is failing, her Chronic Panic disorder kicks into high gear.
Dan is a older, first year dental student because he never really wanted to be a dentist. Instead he loves finance. But his father died, leaving his mom to run their dental practice and he feels the need to help his mom so she doesn’t have to sell the practice.
When Harper runs into Dan, there is an instant attraction that leads to a “fake” friendship until Harper is ready to give into the attraction. The friendship is beautiful because as it unfolds we discover that both of these characters have suffered loss, and that loss has caused them to make decisions that impact their future. The guilt and the burdens they bare make them so real. Harper becomes vulnerable with Dan, and vice versa. When Harper finally does give into the attraction it is hot!
I recommend listening to this book, you will not be disappointed.

I really wanted to like this book, but something just seemed to be missing. Dental students Harper and Dan end up becoming fast friends after a literal run-in, but she is graduating in a few months, so she wants nothing but friendship. However, things quickly escalate. I enjoyed the emphasis of mental illness in this book (anxiety), however I feel like there should have been more talk of how the characters tried to fix their problems. I also just got bored with the book during the middle section, I felt like nothing happened and when something did happen, it was pretty predictable.
