I enjoyed looking throughout this book. It had spun cotton crafts that looks fun to do. These patterns in this book look easy to follow the instructions. It even had some pictures of the design.
I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. This is my honest unbiased opinions.
I like this book of old-fashioned spun cotton crafts. Reminds me of crafts from my childhood. Easy to understanf instructions.
This isn't a craft I was familiar with exactly, though looking through the projects, I recognize lots of fun vintage goodness! This book will definitely teach you how to make these lovely crafts, with good, clear instructions and lots of helpful pics. I especially liked the Christmas ornaments (I'm a sucker for Christmas decorations)! If you're a fan of vintage crafting, you need this book!

I've tried lots of crafts over the years but never come across spun cotton crafts. The book is well set out and has lots of well illustrated examples and projects, can't wait to get started.
What a great book to get nostalgic with! I remember childhood Christmas ornaments made with the techniques used in this book and always wondered how they were made. Valerie has written a very comprehensive book which includes a history of cotton and spun cotton. There are sections for using the different types of cotton and techniques for creating different ornamental effects. Can't wait to try some of these!
My thanks to the author and Netgalley for providing me with a copy in return for my honest opinion.
This book was a lovely surprise. Spun cotton is not a craft I ma familiar with, but the detailed explanations and pictures make it seems feasible even for a complete newbie like me. That said, I do think more experienced crafters would get more out of this book because the process does seem complex. The level of detail is impressive and can be extrapolated to other crafts (like the molds of faces and armatures). The final crafts cover broad range: traditional, cute (and cutesy), classic and nostalgic. I most loved the feathered birds and the fruit, I can see those fitting a variety of occasions and lending themselves to modernized styling. Absolutely lovely.
Spun Cotton Crafts is a crafting and tutorial collection with 25 vintage/retro projects by Valerie Lloyd. Due out 24th May 2022 from Fox Chapel, it's 144 pages and will be available in paperback format.
Spun cotton is a medium used for creating figural ornaments and decorations using simple materials such as cotton fibre, glue, and embellishments. It's a traditional craft with its origins in the late Victorian era in Europe, but moderately popular up through the 1960s and enjoying something of a renaissance now. The author is adept at explaining processes and materials and general DIY/crafters won't have any trouble at all following the instructions in this volume.
The book contains an introduction and history followed by a general tutorial on techniques: coloring, dyeing, painting, tinting, structure (armatures and shaping the base), and building and applying cotton fibre to the base. The following chapters contain the actual tutorials. They're full of fun and appealing, very retro projects such as animals, decorative sculptures, and ornaments. As the author points out in the introduction, although spun cotton is a distinctly nostalgic/retro craft, the reader is only limited by their imagination and the process can certainly be applied to whatever style the artist fancies.
Tutorials include tools and supplies in a bullet list, followed by step-by-step instructions. Tutorial photos are clear and in color, and not hampered by hands or tools in the way of the action. Measurements are given in both imperial (American) and metric units. Full size project templates are provided in the book.
Four stars. It's nice to see fibrecrafts other than quilting, knitting, cross stitch, and crochet getting some representation. This is a very well written guide for an admittedly niche craft.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I love crafting. All sorts of crafts. I love working with fibers and textures and this book is a perfect blend of both. Another craft hobby to add to my list of many. I can't wait to do some of the suggested projects in this book.
I remember so many of these decorations during the holidays as a child! I was so excited to find this book on making them. I don't know how for sure how easy they are tp make, but I am a crafter, so will be trying a couple in coming months. I never gave any thought to all the different types of cotton were available, Supplies needed for the projects is covered at the front of the book, followed by many projects to make using them. I loved the pumpkins! They will be my first project.
Anyone looking for a fun, inexpensive craft, will likely enjoy this book. May even work with older children in a classroom.
This was so interesting! I had never read about spun cotton crafts before, so it was super neat to see all these cool projects, complete with detailed instructions and gorgeous photos. Definitely want to try and make some of these crafts in the future!
we have all seen those videos where they tap, tap, tap cotton until it makes a thing. I watch those and think I can do that. Well, this book taught me that I was wrong. reading step by step and seeing how long it takes to make them was hobby changing. I don't have the patience to do this. Don't get me wrong. this book is great, it shows and teaches you how to make all kinds of things. and if you want to start a very involved and time consuming hobby this book to the perfect one to teach you
Spun Cotton Crafts, I never hear about it before read this book. In the picture it looks like felting doll craft, but it is so much different technics.
This books so amazing as guidance to me learn basic and necessarily about this craft.
Material, tools technics and some projects to try later. I really like this book.
Thanks Netgalley to providing me this book and boost my creativity.
This ended up not being what I was hoping. I was thinking like dryer balls, practical application of spun cotton crafting and decor, but I didn't really see that.
There were dolls, and armatures, cake picks, vintage ornaments, but not anything that I would personally make and use.
I will say that the pictures and directions were very good! If the projects are your style, I think one would enjoy the book.
It just wasn't for me.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Spun Cotton Crafts by Valerie Lloyd is an absolutely beautiful DIY book that will teach you how to create spun cotton crafts. The book is illustrated with plenty of full-color photos and step-by-step instructions. According to the description, this book "features more than 25 adorable step-by-step projects using affordable materials, from glitter icicles and a bell garland to cotton ball chicks, mossy forest mushrooms, and more!"
Overall, Spun Cotton Crafts would make the perfect gift for the DIY-er in your life. One highlight of this book are the beautiful full-color photos. Some of the books in this genre tend to skimp on the photos or only provide black-and-white photos. Thankfully, that does not happen here. There are plenty of photos and step-by-step directions here. Also, the crafts that the book teaches you to make are absolutely gorgeous. If you're intrigued by the description, I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in July!
Love this book, I have never come across the use of spun cotton as a craft tool. We all know that spun cotton is used in medicine, and that there are some wadding made from cotton for quilting. This cotton is used in molds and to create shapes of all sorts using an armature.
There are very informative instructions on dyeing, using glue, wrapping - wet or dry, and molding faces with this relative cheap material. Wonderful gifts and decorations to make brooches, birds, people, slippers and table toppers to name just a few.
An interesting book- one I am going to try.
I had no idea that such a craft existed (spun cotton). The book explains the entire process to you, including how to get some cotton. I was surprised that I could just buy 100% cotton batting (what I use for quilting) to make these figures. Each item seems like a tremendous amount of work. But in essence, you are using the cotton fibers to make shapes and items kind of like clay. You can paint on them, work them into different shapes, and even dress them. This is a true resource to anyone who wants to get involved in this craft.
I really look forward to picking this title up when it's published.
The information is thorough and the projects are perfectly charming vintage. If you've ever wanted to make felted sculpture but have an aversion to using animal products, this is the perfect guide for you.
This collection uses a variety of cotton forms - roving, batting, etc - for projects. Instructions are clear and include good photos demonstrating the steps. The Halloween cat is my favorite, but probably the only one I'd attempt. These just mostly aren't my style. This could be a great collection for another crafter though!
Thank you to Fox Chapel Publishing, Fox Chapel and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Cotton and felt inspired mixed media projects. A level up from basic felting. Contains instruction for beginners, and different techniques for colouring projects.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. This is truly an amazing book! I can't wait to try and make something from it. It is really neat that this is such an old fashion craft and this book is really informative! Highly recommend if you are a crafter or want to try a new hobby.
