The concept of a school for people to learn how to heal magical creatures is unique and enjoyable. The art was gorgeous, I especially enjoyed all the magical creatures and nature scenes. But the characters could have been more diverse and the story also felt messy. Overall, it's a 3 star read for me, but I think a younger audience wouldn't mind the issues I have with this graphic novel.

Professor Archibald Balzar. a renowned cryptozoologist on the Isle of Vorn, is offering a summer apprenticeship for his best student, and Sorceline hopes to be chosen. Only she's competing with every other student in the class for the coveted position. Learning how to heal hurt mythical creatures (including pixies, a gorgon and a dragon) is challenging enough but Sorceline soon discovers that she possesses strange abilities that cause her to question her very identity. When her classmates start disappearing, Sorceline wonders if she's responsible, since each disappearance occurs after one of her angry outbursts. Is she unknowingly cursing her classmates? Will she get kicked out of school before she has a chance to discover what's happened to the students or finds out who she really is?

I have a soft spot for boarding school books, so I thoroughly enjoyed this take on a cryptozoology academy. The kids are well-differentiated and diverse, and each one has their own story.

Sorceline's struggles with her identity are convincing without being self-absorbed, as she cares deeply about how her actions might be affecting others. This empathy - combined with her struggles - makes her relatable and likeable. Many middle graders will recognize - and identify with - Sorceline's sudden fits of bad temper.

For me, one of the most interesting characters is Tara, a student who fiercely competes with Sorceline to win the apprenticeship. Tara confides in her friend, Arlene, that she needs to win it because life is so much better for her at the school than it is at home. She takes an instant dislike to Sorceline, who always gives the right answers in class and seems to be Professor Balzar's favourite. And who can blame her? A character this prickly and empathetic cries out for further development in later books.

This is a portal fantasy but for me, the mechanics of how the students got to Vorn needed further development. None of the students have any memory of how they arrived at the school. Wouldn't they have been shocked to discover themselves in a strange place, with no idea of how they got there? Cell service is non-existent on Vorn, yet Sorceline is somehow able to communicate by phone with her mother. Wouldn't Sorceline's mother be a bit freaked out to find her daughter missing, not to mention that she's ended up at a strange school that the mother can't visit? Portal mechanics are finally explained near the end but without being more fully integrated into the plot, they feel tacked on. The disorienting experience of arriving on Vorn and Sorceline's discovery of the portal could have been used to amplify her self-doubts throughout the book, making for a stronger story.

Paola Antista's black and white art is both beautiful and eerie, conveying that all is not what it seems on the Isle of Vorn.

Reader alert: the book ends on an unexpected cliffhanger, which may or may not work for some readers.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing. This review will also be posted in the April edition of Bookcase Bizarro: Children's Book reviews (www.lindabrowne.ca).

Meet Sorceline. A young apprentice under Archibald Balzar, studying cryptozoology and competing with five other students to become his assistant by the end of the summer. But it is no ordinary summer on the Isle of Vorn. Zombie pixies. Petrified statues. No cryptid nor human seems to be safe from the strange plot that is unfolding. And Sorceline and Willa take it upon themselves to solve this mystery - before more people get hurt.

I loved reading this book. The mystery was thrilling, the twists and turns kept on my toes, and the amazing illustrations drew me into the atmosphere and the world. I could not put this book down until I read the final page! The characters were endearing, and I am excited to get to know them better when the rest of the books are translated. I found the illustrations beautiful, atmospheric, and drew me right into this magical world.

I had so much fun reading this graphic novel. I am excited to follow Sorceline's adventures in future books to come, and I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys beautiful graphic novels, stories with magical creatures, and a mystery that keeps you guessing around every turn.

Thank you NetGalley & Andrews McMeel Publishing for the digital ARC of this book.

I really enjoyed Sorceline, honestly. It is packed with just everything from suspense to fantasy. Major Fantastic Beasts vibe with all the magical creatures. The graphics are spot-on with a fast-paced story that keeps you on the edge. The end summed up everything pretty well so no complaints!

The artwork and adventure were a delight! I found the plot and some scenes to be amiss though so I can't say I'd recommend it.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher. Unfortunately I have tried everything I can think of and cannot find a way to open the protected PDF and read the file type, so I cannot read and provide feedback. However the cover and the synopsis are fabulous and this is still something I'd be interested in reading and sharing when it comes out. Thank you.

I was always a fan of mythical creatures, fantasy worlds and magic, that’s why Sorceline won my heart easily with the mixture of all these elements.

The story and the graphic reminded me so many well-written novels, that I had really high expectations, which never once failed during the read.

I was totally hooked of this adventurous graphic novel, and I would be happy to read more from this magical world.

The artwork in Soceline is amazing! My 10 year old son loved that there was some mystery but it was also very magical. He is extremely anxious to read more about Sorceline! I also thought that it was a good story. The artwork on the cover is what initially drew me to this book. After reading the description, I felt that it was a book my son would love- and he did!
Thank you for NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of Sorceline. All opinions in this review are my own.

I really liked this graphic novel ! The story is magical and gets you hooked, the magical creatures and the characters are unique and the drawings are beautiful. The story was going a little too fast for me and I would have liked to see more of the development, but it is perfect for children as it is an entertaining read. I can't wait to read the next book !

Thanks to the publisher for the ARC

The mysteries and the illustrations were top notch, however the characters and the lines were a bit cheesy.

The illustrations in Sorceline are absolutely gorgeous! Loved all the colors in this graphic novel and was amazed by Sylvia Douyé's ability to illustrate the magical elements of this book with such talent. I was also hooked on the story and couldn't stop reading until I figured out who was behind the disappearances.

Since this is middle grade, it can feel a bit predictable at moments, but my main issue was that there were some gaps in the narration and at moments I felt a bit lost as a reader. Also why was everyone so intrigued with or devoted to Sorceline? There were also some mentions of magical creatures as animals and I found those a bit awkward.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I absolutely loved the art in this graphic novel. The character design and the beautiful illustrations of the magical creatures were so fun and colorful. The story itself was also fun, evoking the zany and carefree nature of Hogwarts, if Care of Magical Creatures was the only class. The plot was kind of all over the place sometimes, and kind of clunky. I am not used to reading a ton of graphic novels, especially for this age group, so I may be harsher than I intend, but I think it could be improved.

I was super excited to read this graphic novel. I love fantastical animals and the idea of a school for the care of magical creatures fascinates me. It always has a magical, science-y feel to it that sparks fascination and wonder in me.

First of all, I wanna say that Paola Antista's art is absolutely gorgeous. The world design and the creatures, the colors, everything gives this story a very enchanting and mysterious feel. The cover alone makes me want to stare at it forever and discover every tiny detail.

The characters are interesting and each has a special personality trait. While Sorceline is inquisitive and has a special instinct for cryptids, her new friend Willa is curious and a bit pushy. Tara is overly ambitious and a bit of a brat and Madame S. is not so secretly a vampire.

I loved the whole idea behind this story. Not only is it full of magical creatures that need treatment and fascinating school lessons - seriously, if we had that in school, everyone of us would have yearned to go to school every Sunday evening - there is also a mystery afoot that needs solving. Nothing is like it seems to be.

Unfortunately, I also thought that the plot was a bit confusing. While there is this great mystery of disappearances and attacks, sometimes a storyline or scene just seems to break off. I don't think it was a fault in my arc though. The story just shifts to the next scene and I was left feeling a bit behind, confused and with a "wait, what just happened?" question mark hanging over my head. Some things are just not explained enough. I hope this gets resolved and a bit streamlined in the next part of the series because by the end I was feeling a bit frustrated.

All in all, I thought that this graphic novel is absolutely gorgeous and I loved to learn about the creatures and the characters. The mystery was gripping and engaging and with a little editing or expansion this story could be really great.

Amazingly beautiful artwork with a great story to accompany it. I would so love to see it on the big screen with the artwork of the illustrators. Can't wait for the next installment.

Thank you, Netgalley, for this free ARC.

The cover art and description drew me to this book. The interior art work did not disappoint. It was full if interesting settings and creatures in vibrant colors. I found the concept intriguing, but the execution lacked cohesion. Often times, the transition from one scene to the next didn't make sense and made the story confusing. Apparently, this story was originally written in french. I wish I had the opportunity to read the original version. Maybe that would resolve some of the issues.

Not a bad read and beautiful visuals. I would give volume 2 a try when it is available.
