I dont really know where to start with this one lol. Its incredibly short, and with a lot packed in which means it's pretty fast! It's good that the whole book is pure suspense and one thing happening after the other but it also means you don't really get to know or care about any of the characters. They're all very flat, one is just stupid, the other a sociopath, the 3rd a serial killer and the 4th is doing some kind of munchens by proxy......... all very odd and dramatic. I loved the premise and thought it would be an intelligent and fast paced thriller but it was more like "here's the synopsis"...... *the entire book is basically the synopsis with no further detail, events, characters or depth added*. I liked the writing style and the 3 perspectives but it was just so short..... and flat. And leaves so so many questions! It's readable and will pass a cpl of hrs but it's not going to have you cancelling plans because you can't bear to put it down. If you don't need much realism or logic in your stories then you'll probably get on fine with this because as I said, it is a fascinating premise and from page 1 it is all go, all the time
I really wanted to like this book - it had such promise (pun intended).
A husband secretly believing he's doing good for his wife, a wife secretly believing she's doing good for a stranger, and a stranger with an ulterior motive. Ahhhh...the plot thickens. There was also a possessive husband, with his domestic stalking of his own wife, and his deals with a shady doctor. But the totally unbelievable situations and even, worse the constant repetition really made me grit my teeth to get through this. Did I mention the repetition?
I do appreciate the opportunity to read an advance copy provided by NetGalley and Inkubator Books.
I received an ARC of this novel through NetGalley.
The Promise is based upon a premise that is unimaginable, as much as anything can be these days. Scott is a criminal defense lawyer. One of his clients is a quack doctor. This doctor does kidney transplants for profit. Scott arranges with this doctor to trick another woman (Kathleen) to donate a kidney to his wife (Erin), who doesn't even know she needs one. Meanwhile, Kathleen thinks she is using the quack to trick Erin into donating her kidneys to Kathleen and her daughter. Who is really tricking who? That is the mystery that remains top of mind to the reader throughout this book.
While the premise of this book is complicated, the plot is simple and straightforward. Many pages are devoted to the efforts Scott, Erin and Kathleen are making to pull off the illicit kidney transplant.
The ending is conclusive, not surprising. The author makes the point that this is a world where people unashamedly take advantage of the good nature of others. Since both Scott and Kathleen deserved their comeuppance, would either or both of them pay for their actions?
The plot of this book was extremely convoluted. There were no likeable characters and the dynamic between the characters was confusing and never fully explained. Erin is the housewife who never questions anything going on in her life. Scott is stalking her but she never finds out? She needs a kidney transplant but has no idea? The plot and premise of the story were ridiculous to me. I kept reading to see if it would be explained at the end and maybe wouldn’t be so crazy, but it never ended up making sense.
This is a hard one for me as I was really enjoying it but then towards the end it started falling flat for me. I didnt think the characters were as developed as they could have been and i felt the pacing of the book was a bit off, so it just wasnt for me.
I liked the description of this book and it started well, but then I just lost interest. A lot of other readers loved it, so it's me not the book. Sorry but this one isnt for me
This sounded so good and started off pretty strong, and then it just sort of fell apart at least for me. I know a lot of people loved it. To me, it just sort of fell flat.
Ok it wasn't totally bad. Some of the characters were really good and I did become really invested in them and their stories. The one thing though was I was left with more questions than answers when I finished the book.
Did I get a different book than everyone else?? At first, I was intrigued, and then I was completely hooked. And then I was frustrated. The overdone lovey dovey romance, the gullibility, how utterly in thoughtful can one woman be? I mean, come on. And I had a million questions about the ever growing plot holes in both story and characters. I have quickly grown to adore Shiner's work but this needs a lot of work.
A husband that is so concerned about his wife that he had an app installed in her phone and cameras in the house to know her every move at all times and it’s gets more sinister then that but you will have to read the book to find out what happens..
Would you put your life in the hands of someone you met at a pub named the Angry Donkey?
Kathleen Bell has a health challenge and discovers that with a bit of money she can buy her health back with the help of Dr. Thomas.
Erin Anders has a problem, too. She just doesn’t know it. Dr. Thomas can fix it, too.
Scott Anders already fixed Dr. Thomas' problem, but now he needs the good doctor to return the favor.
This spectacular, nail-biting psychological thriller is one of the best I’ve ever read. Firstly, the dramatic irony is expertly handled. Author Emily Shiner has mastered the alternate point of view technique; it’s key to this story’s success. It’s told in the first person and the switches between the 3 characters (Scott, Erin, and Kathleen) occur with the chapter breaks. It’s done so well that the plots, climaxes and perspectives all parallel each other. One of the advantages of presenting the story this way is that readers get to know each character’s true thoughts because they have the thrill of being inside each character’s head. Another advantage is, that with a fast-paced plot, the shifting point of view lets readers shift heads, thereby keeping them on their toes. It makes for a gripping story when the reader knows more than the characters!
The character voices are what drives this story; they’re each memorable, unique voices and the dialogue is tailored to each character. I was invested in the story because I cared about what happened to each character - good or evil!
After turning the last page, I checked that there were no tracking apps on my cell phone, no hidden cameras in my home, and then I changed my password to my ehealth login. Don’t worry about me. I’ll always check someone’s credentials when it comes to asking for their help. I hope you will, too. Put on your neck brace, you need to be prepared for the twists Emily Shiner has in store for you!
“Everyone wants to save the people they love. It’s human nature to protect those closest to us, but not everyone in the world is willing to do what it takes. I am.”
I was gifted this advance copy by Emily Shiner, Inkubator Books, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

I absolutely love this book from start to finish, what brilliant characters and an even better plot, would definitely recommend if anyone loves a really good intense psychological thriller.
Wow this book! I will never think of organ donation the same again. The story has a lot of twist interns and is extremely thrilling. I love the main character and you could actually identify with her. I loved this book!
