The editing choices made this a difficult read. Everything from chapter breaks that didn't make sense and tangents that made it hard to follow the timeline down to grammar and syntax that didn't flow. I was intrigued by the premise, which left me all the more disappointed by the execution.
Chisholm writes about the years when her mother and father joined a Muslim sect in New York. At two years old, she lived in an extremely harsh environment where she wasn't allowed to see her parents and was watched over by bitter, unfeeling women. As an adult, Chisholm recalled incidents from that time and wrote honestly and emotionally about what she experienced. After two years, her mother became disillusioned with what went on and left the cult-ish sect with her in tow. At the writing of her story, the leader was imprisoned for child sexual abuse and more.
