This was a good read with some well done characters. I loved the setting, the atmosphere of the whole story. It had twists and turns and characters you loved and hated all intentionally created that way by this talented author. The book flowed at a good pace and kept you guessing until the breakneck speed, heart stopping jaw dropping finale. This book has a bit of everything, secrets, gritty dark characters, action, adventure and explosives culminating in one hell of a firey read.
Kara Quinn and Matt Costa take another case together. This setting is in the quaint Washington State town by the bay, where everyone knows everyone, where there is no crime, and the environment matters to the community.
Kara is in a in between space of her career. Kara and Matt are hot and heavy. But also the their relationship goes deeper in this case. The tension in their relationship is what drives this book. They come together with other team members. A woman from Matt's past who has an issue with Kara is on the team. Catherine is the profiler in this bombing case that has shaken up the community. A bombing of a cruise boat that has killed 9 people. No one is taking responsibility for it. Is it a environment group or is one of the victims a target. So with all these roads to go down, I was surprised how the author was able to keep the reader focused. I think the focus was the relationship between Catherine and Kara. The mistrust between them was how should I say it... like a cat fight. A cat fight with the civility and professionalism of keeping the case the main focus. Who was the intended victim would lead to who was the killer.
The secondary characters helped piece the plot and bring it all together! Can't wait to see how far Kara and Matt take their relationship. Kara is tough and vulnerable and she seems to be revolving in this series. I am hooked.
A special thank you to Harlequin and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This is the third book in the Kara Quinn and Matt Costa series. I always suggest reading a series from the beginning, but if you just picked this one up, there is enough background information so you wouldn't be lost.
When the Water Lily explodes, all of the people on board are killed. It is a tragedy, but was it mechanical or deliberate? Matt and his FBI Mobile Response Team quickly arrive to investigate, and this was no accident. The problem is that there are several possible suspects, and the intended target may have been only one of the passengers
Was it the wealthy man with a much younger wife? Or the retired FBI agent? And who had the means and the motive to plan this heinous crime? Could it have been the environmental group with a bone to pick with the charter company? The list is extensive, and the team must figure out the who and why before more lives are lost.
There was an interesting dynamic between Matt and Kara once again, as neither of them want their professional relationship compromised by personal feelings. Also, the claws came out between Kare and Catherine. Kara is not FBI, as she is just on loan from her department for her protection, and Catherine does not respect her abilities. No spoilers, but things get very tense between these team members.
I pegged the villain early on, but it took quite a while for me to figure out the why. Another page-turner and I hope to see these characters again!
The Wrong Victim by Allison Brennan is the third book in her Quinn & Costa Thriller series. This is a thrilling and chilling suspense story. The FBI's Mobile Response Team is called to the San Juan Islands just off the coast of the state of Washington to investigate a bombing. How they go about the investigation and what they find out is spelled out very concisely. The storyline is fast-paced with perfect tension as well as being comprehensive and complex. Sure held my attention. I read the prologue and as the investigation went forward I kept wondering about the significance of it. Readers will enjoy finding out.
There are subplots which enhance the story. One is regarding the relationship between Kara Quinn and Matt Costa that they can't act on while on the job. Another is the animosity between Kara and FBI response team member and profiler Dr. Catherine Jones. This is a super addition to the series.
Another exciting read from Allison Brennan. When you assemble a team of experts, you can't expect them to immediately get along. Kara Quinn is still angry that she can't return to her job as a LA undercover detective and is confused by her secret relationship with her boss, Matt Costas. Combine this with a series of bombings, the death of a retired FBI agent, and a cold case, and there's enough to keep you turning the pages until the end!
Thanks to Harlequin Trade Publishing for giving access to a digital ARC via NetGalley.
this is one of the few series that I've actually read in order since I found it on NetGalley and its maybe one of my all time favorite series by this author as well , its fast pace , with a bit of romance in it , and the author never stops surprising me when it comes to her killers , and the characters just keeping to life more and more with each book, but I do have to say that there is one character in this one that I didn't like and she was one of the good guys , as for the story it was exciting and make me want to know who and why was doing the bombings and who was the intend victim or was there ever one in the first place,
Brennan once again showcases her awesome writing skills in her latest novel, The Wrong Victim. With every book she releases and with the development of each series, you can see how much she invests into the plots and characters she creates. Matt Costa leads the FBI Mobile Response Team, which is called in to investigate a bombing on a yacht in the San Juan Islands. On that day the yacht headed out of the harbor operated by a well- respected former FBI agent Neil Devereux. On the FBI team is Kara Quinn, a police officer on loan to the team. Kara comes with quite a different skill set with her undercover loner skills, not something the rest of the team is use to. Doubts, whether from Kara about being on the team or fellow members doubting her ability to fit on the team, plays a part in the whole story as we all follow their investigation. Right through to the conclusion of the mystery you bounce along with the team wondering who was behind it and other murders that have occurred in the past. Are they connected?. Brennan keeps you guessing right to the end with surprising results. I enjoyed meeting up with the FBI team once again and look forward to the next in the series and highly recommend your next read be The Wrong Victim.
In The Wrong Victim by Allison Brennan, I didn't really see the culprit coming, so that was a pleasant surprise. The story was exciting and kept me reading. I did like most of the characters. Kara was a bit too rough around the edges, but that didn't bother me too much to stop reading.
I will read more from this author and this series. The Wrong Victim is a solid story with solid writing and interesting characters.

The latest book by Allison Brennan is titled The Wrong Victim. The Water Lily, a sunset cruise boat explodes one mile out from the harbor. The FBI is called in to investigate the bombing. The Wrong Victim is part of a series by Ms Brennan, but I haven't read others in the series and had no difficulties following the excellent story. There were some edge of my seat moments where I had to remind myself to breathe. I want to thank NetGalley and Mira for an early copy to review.
A bomb on a charter boat with no survivors brings in the FBI Mobile Response Team. There are a lot of suspects, including the wife of one of the victims. This is a fast paced book with great characters. There are a few twists in the book that I didn’t suspect. The suspense starts from the first and doesn’t let up. This book is part of a series but could be read as a stand alone. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
A sunset cruise ends in tragedy when the Water Lily, a yacht operated by West End Charter and captained by retired FBI agent Neil Devereux, explodes just minutes after it leaves the harbor. There are no survivors but there are many suspects. Could the bomber be the beautiful young trophy wife of one of the victims? Or one of team of software engineers whose recent refusal of a takeover caused financial fallout? What about the young deckhand who traded his deckhand position to another at the last minute?
Matt Costa and Kara Quinn and the FBI Mobile Response unit are assigned to this case in Friday Harbor, Washington. They have barely begun their investigation when two members of the team are nearly killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. Then another explosion makes them realize that they may be the next victims of a clever killer.
Although The Wrong Victim is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone thriller. Allison Brennan includes enough background that we understand that Matt and Kara have a past relationship which leads to tension in this investigation. Catherine Jones, an FBI psychiatrist, adds to this tension with her frequent criticism of Kara. The Wrong Victim is a plot driven, suspenseful mystery full of false clues and surprises. The scenic Friday Harbor, Washington setting is beautifully described. 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing and Allison Brennan for this ARC.
Matt, Kara and their team are as interesting as always although the plot wasn't for me. Even so, this read is worth your time
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc
This was very slow for me for the first 1/3 of the book. It finally picked up and I soon got lost in the storyline. I enjoyed the first two books more. All the regular characters were there and I enjoyed that. Catherine irritated me a bit because she seemed to take an instant dislike to Kara. She seemed very judgmental and unfair for a psychologist. I look forward to the next book in the series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
Boy Oh Boy This was one Intense Read!!
Kara Quinn is at the top of her game in this fast paced thriller. The team is sent to investigate a charter boat explosion that took the life of everyone on board. Including a ex FBI agent working a cold case.
There was so much conflict between Catherine and Kara that it took over the story. I wanted to slap Matt up side the head more than once. I’ll just put it out there I don’t care what kind of stress she was under I do NOT like Catherine. She is a a arrogant know it all.
Lots of suspects and over the top drama. It was a great mystery that keeps you guessing until the end.
A charter boat is bombed killing several people leaving devastation and raising several suspicions. It is up to the FBI Mobile Response Team to dig for clues and stop a bomber from striking again. The novel has great characters with back story depth and is a thriller to the very end.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Quinn and Costa are back and you don't want to miss this one! So GOOD!!! Add this one to your TBR list now.
Thank you #netgalley and #htpbooks #mira for the eARC,
As always Brennan catches my attention from beginning and keeps it until the very last page. The book is full of what ifs and will make you question who dunnit throughout the book.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is full of twists and turns and so many red herrings that it is hard to figure out who did it and why. I like the character, all except one, and the story line
Matt, Kara, and the team are back with a case full of suspects. This one will keep you guessing. The pacing is fast and the mystery intriguing. I didn't guess the answers before the reveal. We also delve more into the characters. I love Matt and Kara and their relationships both personal and professional are ones I'm invested in. Can I also say I hate Catherine. Her last interaction with Kara this book had me cheering Kara on. I'm looking forward to seeing the dynamic between these three play out. I can't wait for the next book!
This book was sent to me electronically for review by Netgalley. This book is a mystery...FBI...family dynamics and friendship...love and romance...marriage...children...who did it? Who planted the bombs? Who did the murders? How to answer? There are so many red herrings in this book that it is difficult to ascertain who did what...I enjoy books by this author...always surprises...difficult to put these books down. Don't miss this one...curl up under a warm afghan, sip a cup of hot tea...enjoy an afternoon of mystery and intrigue...
