4.5 stars! This thriller hooked me from the very first page. It’s cleverly written, going back and forth between then and now. The ending may have wrapped up a little too nicely but I look forward to reading more books by this author. I’d suggest going into it blind like I did but be aware there are a number of trigger warnings. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
4.5 stars
I really enjoyed this fast-paced thriller! Rose gritted her teeth a lot, but that aside, this book is filled with twists to keep the reader guessing and turning the pages. And the dual timeline added to my enjoyment. I've never read anything else by this author, but I'll be sure to check out her books in the future.
Trigger warnings: neglect and domestic violence
The cabin had been empty for a while and looked a bit lost and unloved but that suited Rose; she felt exactly the same.
With her thoughts swirling out of control during the day and haunting her dreams at night, Rose is constantly frightened and on alert. She knows someone else will eventually walk her path, find her weak, and alone, and prevent her story from ever being told. The waiting is the worst part but the world needs to understand what she's done and why. As the weather grows colder Rose realises, alone or not, she is the only person who can stop history repeating itself and that could be the scariest thing of all.
Sarah Alderson is a past master at writing sympathetic protagonists who have reached rock bottom with everything stacked up against them and Rose is a worthy addition to her cast list. As the story unfolds and her memories detail what happened it is impossible not to feel a certain sympathy for Rose but whether this is misplaced can only be gauged gradually as her story evolves which it does at a very satisfying rate.
There are triggers for sexual trauma and bereavement throughout.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a fast flowing brilliant standalone which is absolutely worth a read on a warm summer beach or by an open fire with a snuggly blanket on a cold winter's night.
No one can hear you scream
Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review your titles. I really not the opportunity!
I do appreciate it and continue to review books that I get the chance to read.
Thanks again!
This is a rags to riches and back again to rags scenario as walls and worlds crumble. Rose Reid is hiding in the cabin in the woods, closer to her skinny fearful childhood self than her more recent persona. Via backtracking from 22 years ago to more recent times which is seamlessly melded with the present day, we learn what has led Rose to the cabin refuge. She really does become a catfish in a shark tank following a meeting in New York City with billionaire Ryan Reid though he makes her feel safe. It’s a Cinderella story but as we know not all fairytales have happy endings with wolf like characters disguising themselves in sheep‘s clothing.
This is a riveting read, an absolute page turner from start to finish and I rip through the pages unable to leave it alone. It’s a fast paced never a dull moment storyline as the depths of what Rose has got herself into reveals it’s self a little bit at a time. The author drops in explosions of information that rock you as they’re so unexpected and you sit there stunned.
The characterisation is excellent you feel everything Rose feels and you root for her and those who help her. Her paranoia, tension, anxiety, helplessness and fear come across loud and clear.
The novel deals with some tough subjects which evolve organically via plot reveals and some do knock you sideways as does the appreciation of what it must be like living in a gilded cage. It’s full of atmosphere especially in the woods with the author using the isolation to ramp up the tension. There are numerous plot twists which escalates the suspense and it builds to a very good conclusion. I thoroughly enjoyed the ultimate ending which is more than satisfying.
Overall, this is an addictive psychological thriller which I really enjoy.
With thanks to NetGalley for that much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
I don't think I have ever read a book by this author. Boy do I get why she is so popular though! This book was intense and so creepy. I couldn't put it down and read it in a few hours. So good!
5 stars to Sarah Anderson. This really was a refreshing and gripping read. Told from several points of view, it focuses on Rose, a socialite from New York who has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. As the story unwinds, Rose and her sister Daisy had a turbulent childhood, Rose while waitressing meets her Prince Charming, Ryan. They marry and have a family. However, Ryan is not the Prince Charming he makes out and has a very dark side.
You can really relate to Rose and you are slurring her on throughout the book, wishing for the happy ever ending she deserves.
It is an original and suspenseful tale and will be adding Sarah Anderson to my favourite author list and look forward to more amazing reads.
The Cabin in the Woods is a psychological thriller from the same author as The Weekend Away, which has recently been adapted into a film on Netflix.
I’m this rags-to-riches-to-rags again story, we meet Rose Reid, hiding out in a cabin in the woods.
She’s injured, only has a small store of food, no electricity, and a desperate fear of being spotted by any locals. Through a series of flashbacks to her childhood and then her early 20’s where she met her incredibly wealthy husband who changed her life completely, we find out what brought her to the cabin and her current predicaments.
This is an incredibly tense, dark novel. Major content warnings for drug abuse, child abuse, child death, parental death, coercive control, abuse, gaslighting, post natal depression, and r*pe.
I found many parts of it hard to read, and as I’ve mentioned before, storylines where the innocent main character is wrongly accused of something heinous gives me terrible anxiety. I actually find it hard to read that kind of storyline so although I flew through the first 20% of this book, I had to keep taking breaks with the rest of it.
I’m aware that is absolutely my own issue, and not something the general reading public has to deal with, but I mention it to explain why I didn’t particularly enjoy this book.
The ending also felt rushed and a bit too neat, but that said, I can see this book similarly to its predecessor being made into a Netflix drama. It would work well on the screen, I think.
With thanks to @netgalley and @avonbooksuk for the opportunity to read The Cabin in the Woods, which is available to read on the 7th of July.
This book was completely different to what I was expecting in the best possible way.
The story is told in two timelines from the POV of Rose - the past from 22 years ago in various intervals until the present. Rose’s parents were both heroin addicts and her mum died from an overdose 22 years ago when she was 9 and her sister Daisy was 6. Their father was a pig and a bully and Rose did the best she could to look after Daisy. Eight years ago she is waitressing and she meets Ryan Reid who, to all intents and purposes, is Prince Charming - good looking and very wealthy. They get married 6 months later. Life is perfect. And we all know there is no such thing!
Still, everything is grand until their daughter, Sienna, is born. Maybe because Rose had such a terrible childhood, maybe she doesn’t think she can be a good mother - either way Rose cannot bond with her baby and she is packed off to a luxury facility to be fixed. And ‘fixed’ she is but now they do not share the same level of intimacy and Rose starts to wonder if Ryan is having an affair. If only that is all it was.
At a function she is approached by a woman who tells her her husband is a monster. I’ll leave it there for you to discover all the good stuff for yourselves but rest assured this is a nerve shredding story. In the present Rose is hiding away in a cabin in the woods she has tin cans on some string as an early warning system and she is petrified every time they rattle. Mostly it’s just raccoons. Mostly. She is petrified to go into the small town to buy supplies in case someone recognises her. Her picture is splashed across the newspaper. What has she done?
There was a lot of dread building throughout this story. I really felt for Rose, after her sh1tty childhood she thought she had won the lottery of life but it was not to be. What I really liked was how she fought back. For a woman who really had no friends (thank you Ryan) she was lucky enough to find some staunch allies. The pacing was great with the tension ratcheting up throughout the story. The ending was fantastic, especially the final scene with the evil MIL - she got the shock of her life.
Well played Ms Alderson, I thought this was a belter! While the story was not particularly original it was written well, with tension mounting throughout and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Many thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books UK for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.
*Thank you to NetGalley, Sarah Alderson and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*
This psychological thriller had me gripped from the beginning, the constant suspense and twist and turns had me so engrossed that I read it in one day. Would highly recommend it!
While I think I liked "The Stalker" better than this one, Sarah Alderson is definitely at the top of the thriller list!
Holy mother!! This book was so good! I devoured it in about 5 hours and am already looking for more of Sarah Alderson's books to read. From the very first page, I was sucked into this dark, tense atmosphere that had the hair on my arms standing on end, eyes popping, jaw dropping and leg thumping simultaneously! I probably looked like a deranged puppet; thank goodness I was alone while reading. Ha! I really had no idea what this book was about. The synopsis was brief and cryptic, leaving a lot up to interpretation. I actually liked the not knowing and being completely clueless. The excitement, the twists and turns were that much more enjoyable for me.
The Cabin in the Woods tells the story of Rose Reid, a Manhattan socialite who finds herself alone in (you guessed it) a cabin in the woods. Alternating POVs between past and present, Rose narrates her rags-to riches tale and how it all came crashing to an end. I will say no more! Only that you need to read this as soon as possible!!!
Thank you to the author, Avon Books UK and NetGalley for allowing me to preview this eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
<b>Note:</b> I received an advanced copy of this book from Avon Books UK via NetGalley.
In a cabin in a wood, A woman by the window stood. Glancing out, she thought she heard. Footsteps, whistling, something stirred. Hiding here, she fears the night, for what’s done in the dark will come to light.
While this book was a fast-paced read and gripping for the most part I also found parts to be rather dull. This is a typical 'nice' husband story coupled with the rich person's ability to get away with pretty much anything they want. A rags to riches life is not fair motif.
The Cabin in the Woods tells the tale of Rose Reid, a New York socialite who is hiding in a remote cabin in the woods when we first meet her. The book flits between present day and the past, going right back to Rose's childhood. As the story goes on, we are able to piece together the events that have brought Rose to the cabin and the timelines merge together seamlessly in order to create a dramatic, but very satisfying ending.
The characterisation of Rose is excellent and I quickly became drawn in to her story, feeling every ounce of frustration, panic and hopelessness along with her. The book was fast paced and became addictive; I finished this one pretty quickly.
This is the first book I have read by Sarah Alderson, but I will certainly be reading more.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.
I loved this author’s previous books, THE STALKER and FRIENDS LIKE THESE, so I was excited to dive into this one!
This author knows how to write the perfect thriller! This book grabbed me from the start and never let go until the very last page.
Told in alternate timelines, past and present, I felt so much tension with each chapter as I learned about Rose’s character and why she was running. I really appreciated the main character’s resourcefulness and ability to survive off the grid in the cabin. I loved how atmospheric the story was and as I read it in my cabin in the woods, I felt like I was right there with Rose. This was one of the most suspenseful, anxiety inducing stories I have ever read.
The conclusion was shocking and will leave you reeling! So, so satisfying!
This one was just ok . It was good easy typical thriller. It would make a good beach book. Thanks for letting me review this book to the publisher and Netgalley
To be honest, there wasn’t a lot of originality to this domestic suspense novel, but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless. A 3.5 star read for me, rounded to 4 on here.
There is content that will be triggering to readers, but it’s difficult to mention any of the triggers without spoiling parts of the plot, so I won’t mention them here.
It’s a very quick read with short chapters that alternate between the past and present. I enjoyed seeing the growth of the MC and loved that there are a lot of strong female characters and multiple examples of women empowering women within the book.
I thought it was an entertaining read that would make for a good movie.
It was my first read of Sarah Alderson’s and I’m looking forward to reading more.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for the copy of this eARC.
Now that's how a thriller is done! I devoured this book in just a few hours and immediately started checking out the author's backlist for more titles!
Told in alternating timelines, this is the story of how a young waitress named Rose caught the eye of a wealthy, powerful man whom she soon marries. She is far removed from her trailer park upbringing with drug addicted parents and the sister she tries so desperately to protect.
Rose's world is shattered, and she's on the run, finding refuge in an isolated cabin in the woods. Thanks to her grandfather's lessons, she knows how to survive off the grid. But after making a much-debated trip to town for groceries, she sees her image on a front page newspaper headline. Will she be found? What exactly is she running from?
This story's pace was taut, brimming with suspense throughout. I was absolutely hooked and couldn't turn the pages fast enough. So many moving parts came together so masterfully. I look forward to reading more of this author's work! Many thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for this early read. THE CABIN IN THE WOODS publishes October 18, 2022.
This is the perfect summer book. Suspenseful, page-turning, and utterly engrossing. Students will love this creepy house on the lake!
Name of Book: The Cabin in the Woods

My Rating: 5 WOW Stars!
I went into this blind. Have to admit the cover caught my eye as most of the great psychological covers all seem to have a house with a light on in the window!! Did I mention most have been great?
Story starts with Rose Reid who has vanished from her New York eight-bedroom home. The police are looking for her body.
We readers know that she is hiding in a ‘cabin in the woods’!
Story goes back and forth ~ Rose- Before and Rose – Now!
I am a big psychological thriller fan and love the secrets, twists and turns.
This is a Thriller more than a Psychological Thriller and the secret is revealed early but loved the ending.
I knew I was near the end and thought ~ is this going to be a cliff hanger?? How is this going to be resolved in the next few pages?
WOW! Author, Sarah Alderson delivered!!!!
She is a new author to me and I am looking forward to my next Sarah Alderson read!!
