Fast paced thriller indeed! Told in dual timelines which I really like. More twists than a pretzel and you better hold on tight for this ending! This book was so good and really well written! My second by this author and definitely not my last!
A mobil home, a Westchester mansion, a sanitarium and a cabin in the woods. Rose takes us through all of these in her journey from rags to riches and back again. I could not put down this psychological thrilller. There were lots of twists that kept me guessing if it was all going to be ok in the end.
The only thing that was a little bothersome in the story was that some English words were used instead of American English words in a story that was supposed to take place in New York. That sometimes took me out of the book a bit.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon for an eARC of this book.
4/5 stars
From rags to riches, and then back to rags? Rose thought she met prince charming, but oh was she wrong. One revelation and her life changes forever. This novel didnt hold my attention from the very beginning but about 30% into it I was hooked. I enjoyed Rose's character and really felt for her. I would definitely recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this novel. I am rating this book based the stars due to lack of time to leave a full review.
This domestic thriller opens with Rose hiding out in a cabin in upstate New York. She taps into her childhood of learning survival skills to keep alive as winter begins to move into the area. She's trying to draw as little attention to her existence as possible, venturing out only when absolutely necessary. The noises from the forest and occasional footprints in the area unnerve her as she's ready to run at any moment. She isn't sure what is out there in the forest, but if it is who she thinks it is, then she'll need to run as fast as she can.
TW/CW: drug use/abuse, drug overdose, addiction, pregnancy, postpartum psychosis, death of a child, domestic abuse, sexual assault, child sexual abuse by a parent, child neglect
The description of this book is much more vague than most domestic thrillers and I think it can be fun to go into books knowing little to nothing about them. In this case, I think knowing very few details ahead of time really helped amp up the tension and intrigue during the slower, less action-y portions of the early book. However, there are some pretty significant content warnings that aren't in the description so I would encourage folks to check on those warnings ahead of time just so you don't get blindsided.
The pacing of this was fantastic for me and I think a lot of that was thanks to the gradual build up of tension as well as reveals. The book opens with Rose at the cabin, we don't know who she is or what led her to be at this cabin. The majority of the story is Rose at the cabin which could easily get boring and repetitive. However, Alderson does such a great job of using the dual timeline as well as timing out exactly what information to reveal at key points in the story that I was fully drawn into the story really early on. We get flashbacks to Rose's difficult childhood as well as her as an adult in more recent years. Alderson does a great job laying out breadcrumbs for the reader to follow as we learn more and more about Rose's background. There's really good momentum of the story in both timelines we're following so even if we're in a bit of a lull with one, the other timeline has something moving the story forward. The pacing slowly ramps up over the story and by the time we're in the final act, the reveals are coming pretty quickly. This isn't the most fast-paced, action-packed thriller but it has such a carefully plotted and executed plot arc that the pacing naturally picks up over time.
Most of the reveals in the story are the reader finding out what led Rose to be in this cabin. The reveals are really well distributed throughout the book so it never felt info-dumpy at any point. I also thought Alderson did a great job of picking what level of reveals to give the reader. We start off with somewhat mundane details revealed to the reader but then the reveals begin to increase in severity. By the end, we're learning some really heavy stuff about our characters and by that point I was 100% invested. Then, once we're caught up in both timelines and can move forward, we get some more action on page and since I was so invested in our characters, I was on the edge of my seat while reading. The very last big reveal was fantastic and was perfectly paced - one of my favorite reveals in recent memory.
Since we spend so much time with Rose in an isolated setting, I think it is extremely important that her characterization is spot on. As we learn more and more about her background and the events that preceded the cabin, Alderson does a great job of fleshing out her character. There's a bit of back and forth with things that get revealed where we initially think Rose is one type of character, but maybe she's actually a different type. It really felt like with every action Rose took or with every piece of background information we got, she became more of a whole person. I thought she was a really engaging character to follow and reading her journey was extremely satisfying.
Overall, I really enjoyed this read and was completely engrossed in the reading experience. I stayed up extra late to finish and the ending was super satisfying so it was 100% worth it! I loved Rose as a character and found her really engaging to follow through this book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the ARC

Gripping, thrilling and impossible to put down. I was hooked from start to end. A great plot line that moved along at pace and kept me entertained throughout. Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books UK and the author for the chance to review.
A past you can't seem to escape, but you have been given the perfect new life, or is it perfect? It is in fact far from it. It is time to make a new escape. What really happened, and who is telling the truth?
Intriguing story and memorable characters takes the readers on a strange ride through foggy memories and a past that won't let go. It is hard to know who is lying, who is telling the truth, and what people are hiding.
The story is built up very well, the writing is just perfect for this book, and it was not possible to let the book down. I simply had to find out the truth!
This is a book best to go into without knowing too much.
I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that The Cabin in the Woods is about Rose, a woman with a tough childhood who finds herself injured and hiding out at a remote cabin in the woods. When Rose sneaks out to buy supplies, she sees a newspaper announcing that there’s a $50,000 reward out for information on her whereabouts. Uh oh!
That is all I will say, because the fun of this book is all the twists and turns. There is revelation after revelation about who Rose is, what she did, and how she got herself in this predicament. Is she a victim or a criminal? Will she get out of this situation alive?
As I said above, the twists in this book are really nicely paced, making it a fun and suspenseful story. I can definitely see this one making it to Netflix as well.
The Cabin in the Woods would make an excellent beach read, if you’re looking for one of those!
What a fantastic page-turner this was and it definitely deserves more than 5 stars! This story covered such a wide array of emotions as I read it. I was scared for Rose and her sister, Daisy, when they were growing up and mad at their parents for the harm they were causing them. I was sad and weepy in other parts of the book. I was furious at Rose's handsome husband, Ryan, for all the ugly things he was doing to her to keep her quiet. I read this book is record time because I simply could not and did not want to put it down.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the ARC of this very powerful book that I highly recommend to anyone who loves a great thriller.
4.5 rounded up.
After reading Sarah Alderson’s book THE STALKER last year, I was beyond excited to pick this one up - and I’m so glad I did.
THE CABIN IN THE WOODS offers a synopsis that is quite vague (and is accessible for you to read if you’re checking out this review), and, honestly, that is the perfect way to dive into this book!
This book is atmospheric, heart-pounding, and a poignant example of women getting shit done.
It’s told in both past and present timelines, and the slow build was absolutely *chef’s kiss*
I absolutely flew through the last 25% of this book and the twists 👏kept 👏me 👏going.
I highly recommend checking this one out and I can’t thank NetGalley and Avon Books UK enough for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

The Cabin in the Woods is a tense and
unputdownable psychological thriller. feel like you’re walking this journey with Rose, you feel her sacrifes, pain and determination to stay alive. Most surprising was the turn this story took, it
gives you so much more than you expected. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
Actual rating: 4,5 stars, but rounded up because I had a great time.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of The Cabin in the Woods.
This was SO good. I honestly expected something very different, more along the lines of a horror movie set in the woods, but I was delighted when I realized where the story was going. I love a good psychological thriller and this was one that kept me on the edge of my seat, while still allowing me to comfortable read it at night.
The topics that this book deals with are HEAVY, trigger warnings for addiction, domestic violence, sexual assault and child death. I don't want to go into any more details regarding the plot because I think it's best to go in knowing as little as possible. It was a great story and I tried to put the puzzle pieces together. I wouldn't say that it's the most thrilling or unique plot line, but it was done so well and had a lot of emotional depth.
I also really enjoyed the writing style, and that we got a past and present storyline.
This was my first book by the author, but it certainly won't be my last, as this was such a delight to read.
Rating - 4.5 stars rounded off to 5
Heart-racingly fast paced, I simply flew through this!
After loving The Stalker by the author, I couldn’t resist her new one up for grabs.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the ARC in exchange of an honest review!
Synopsis –
Rose is hiding from her past. Having burrowed herself in a remote cabin amidst the woods, she cannot afford to be seen at any cost. Wounded both physically and emotionally as her life crumbled around her, she has no choice but to accept her horrendous reality.
Review -
The narrative alternates between the past and the present, introducing us to Rose’s traumatic childhood and later her married life that leads to her current circumstances.
The plot absorbed me right from the get-go. The isolated setting of the cabin with the on-setting winter provided the perfect atmosphere, evoking an eerie, ominous feeling heightened with a sense of foreboding.
As the authors uncovers Rose’s past, the timeline soon meets the present. The tension builds and builds into a crescendo as the storyline progresses, which makes it impossible to put the book down.
I sympathized with Rose’s struggles as a helpless child, a sister and subsequently as a wife and mother. Having suffered at every stage of her life, she yet again falls prey to some extreme manipulation and guile. I rooted for her all through the ending and loved her journey of transformation.
Alderson has yet again delivered a gripping, fear-inducing mystery thriller, that is sure to provide you with a healthy dose of adrenaline.
Highly recommended to the fans of the genre!
TW - themes of drug/child abuse, addiction, post-partum psychosis and sexual violence.
I loved this book. I felt every fear that the main character did. I was sad and wanted to jump into the the book and help her. Hopefully she was not alone. I can not give away anything more. But I reccomend the book to all that like reading thrillers and are obsessed with mystery thrillers.
I had a great buddy read and it could not be better. We started slow but there were so many leads and possible scenaries and to be honest I wanted an other conclusion but I realy loved the story even was the opposite I usually like. I love the main character with every chapter more.
Thank you Netgalley and Avon Books UK for this great opportunity.
Ratiing: 4,5 stars
This book was published on 23 June, so it's available now! I'm very late with my review (sorry @netgalley😇) but thanks for my advanced reading copy and thanks to the publisher too!
It's been a while since I last read a thriller I couldn't put down, so I was so happy when I started this book because I knew from the first chapter it was going to be a gripping read. I loved every second of it!
This was a buddy read with some amazing bookstas who I'm sure will agree that the short and snappy chapters made this book so great. The story sucks you in right from the beginning as we meet Rose, scared, injured and hiding in a cabin in the woods!
But who is she hiding from?
The book flips back and forth from the past to the present until the two timelines collide!
As we get to know Rose and follow her turbulent life we start to realise that not all is what it seems!
The more the story gets closer to the present day the more you won’t be able stop reading!
This is my second novel by this author who is fast becoming an auto-buy author to me.
The Cabin in the Woods by Sarah Alderson is a propulsive page-turner of a read that had me flying through the pages. This one grabs you from the start and takes you on a thrilling and heartstopping ride.
Rose has had a rough start in life but is determined to make something of herself. She is a student and working as a waitress when she meets the enigmatic Ryan Reid, and it is love at first sight. Happily becoming his wife, Rose's new life is the stuff of fairytales and is in sharp contrast to her past. Told from an alternating timeline of past and present, Rose's story unfolds in a fully fleshed out narrative. I will say no more for fear of unwittingly revealing any spoilers, but trust me when I say that you do not want to miss this one.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for an ARC.
(4/5 stars) Definitely check trigger warnings!
Man, this one is a page turner!
Rose is in an abandoned cabin in upstate New York. Once a wealthy socialite, she now spends her days surviving and avoiding people so she won’t be recognized. But why did she end up here? We follow Rose through past and present storylines to figure out the truth of why she is hiding and if the cabin in the woods can keep her safe.
This is an un-put-downable thriller with so many twists and turns it will make your head spin! There are a lot of heavy points in this plot and it has some incredibly heart-wrenching moments. This was my first Sarah Alderson book and I am impressed with the writing and ability to depict a chilling atmosphere. I didn’t want to put it down!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
For me the story did not live upto the blurb. I was expecting a really good thriller but all i got was a lukewarm domestic. For me there was nothing surprising and very predictable. Saying that I am sure other readers will enjoy it more just not for me.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
A fast paced and intriguing thriller, I couldn’t put this book down.
Rose, together with her younger sister, is raised in a broken home. Her family live in a trailer and her parents are addicts. Because of this, she is desperate to have stability. When she meets Ryan she thinks that her dreams are being fulfilled.
This book alternates between the past, showing her childhood, how she met Ryan, their relationship as well as the present day where she is in a cabin in upstate New York.
The book touches on serious themes: drug abuse, addiction, rape, murder, domestic abuse so should be read with caution.
A masterclass from Sarah Alderson.
It is worth noting that The Cabin In The Woods has some challenging topics that include neglect, drug use and depression.
The story is told from the Point of View of Rose using both Past and Present timeline.
Her past shows as poor lifestyle and her present married to Ryan. However all is not what it seems. Twists and turns and plenty of action it is certainly difficult to put down.
