I am interested in the 'goings on' at Bletchley during the war and I tend to seek out books about this subject. An interesting book, almost a romance but with a twist. The Women in this book are beginning to find their feet and make their own life choices. Something their mothers were not able to do.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins, One more Chapter for the advance copy of this book.

Evie Milton doesn't worry about the war that is raging in Europe too much. In early 1940 it almost feels like it won't actually touch England, Then the Nazi's invade France and it seems much closer to home.
Evie loves being in London but when she is forced to return from London to her ancestral home by her bullying, overbearing father she is devastated.
When a family friend offers her a way out by going to work at Bletchley Park she jumps at the chance.
Rose Wiley is expecting nothing more than to marry her beloved Fiancée David and run his parent's shop with him. Then David enrols in the RAF and Rose secures herself a job at Bletchley Park in the hope of being closer to him.
Both women love the work and the fact they are doing something useful that could prevent allied deaths and potentially help us to win the war. But to do their jobs effectively they have to be totally immersed in Bletchley and this could cost them dearly.
Told from the point of view of Evie and Rose this is a story of love, loss and the utter determination of the largely unsung hero's of Bletchley Park to do everything they could to change the course of the war. Brilliant writing that transports you back to a time of fear and the courage shown by ordinary people in an extraordinary time.

The Bletchley Women by Patricia Adrian

In a different world, Evie Milton would have accepted her fate, married an aristocrat, and become the doyenne of one of England’s finest estates, just like her mother.

In a different world, Rose Wiley would have married her fiancé, David, established a modest homestead, and brought up a brood of babies, just like her mother.

But this isn’t a different world and these women are not their mothers. Rose dreams of a life filled with more than family and duty to her husband – a life of purpose – and Evie dreams of a life far away from her rarefied existence. Now, as they perform vital work at Bletchley Park decoding intercepted Luftwaffe messages, their role in turning the tide of war in the Allies favour shows Evie and Rose they don’t have to settle for the life once laid out before them.
A very interesting read . It was wonderful what these women did in ww11 which went on to save many thousand lives . A fantastic insight to what may did happen .

This is a WWII thriller set in Bletchley Park. The story features two women, Evie and Rose, who come together to help the resistance efforts at Bletchley. Evie was born into the aristocracy and had her eyes set on marrying into another wealthy family and running an estate. Rose is from far more modest means, a farmer's daughter whose goal is to marry and start her own small farmstead and raise a family. Both women are recruited to perform critical work decoding intercepted messages from the German Luftwaffe and help turn the tide for the Allies in the war. Evie and Rose both grow in many ways through this work and discover their own personal value and skills beyond what either imagined based on the families they were born into. They learn to take risks and the road less traveled, in order to gain meaning in their lives. The story was rich with description and the reader feels the intensity of being placed at Bletchley during a dark and dangerous period in history.

I find the history of code-breaking at Bletchley Park fascinating and I'm always willing to try fiction set in and around the house. So I was pleased to be offered the chance to read The Bletchley Women by Patricia Adrian. Having finished it, I discovered that the author's first language is not English which makes the book a remarkable achievement. It also perhaps explains the Americanisms that crept in. I'm disappointed that her editor didn't pick them up.

That apart, I enjoyed the book very much. The storyline was engrossing and, although the idea of women from very different social backgrounds meeting at Bletchley is scarcely new, the setting in time was - at least to me. It was interesting to read about the early days of the venture.

As I said, I enjoyed the book. However, I felt that the author stretched herself too far and that none of the themes or characters was well enough developed. I'm left with umpteen questions: about Evie's family, Rose's parents, how Esther came to be interned and then released, Nell's marriage... The answer to any one of these questions could have sustained a whole book.

But I'd encourage you to read it and to look out for more from this author.

The Bletchley Women by Patricia Adrian, is a interesting read for all war history buffs. Set in the beginning of the 1940's during WW2, this historical fiction details the secretive work of the Bletchley Park decoders of the "Luftwaffe" messages. The women left their families and took a vow to never speak of their work at Bletchley Park. Through their exemplary sacrifices they saved many lives. This book represents some of the many unsung heroes of that era.

Lets take a look at the main characters:
Rose Wiley loves her fiance David, but wants more for her life. Rose has been raised in a traditional home environment with parents that believe a woman's place is to marry and have children. Will Rose marry David and give up her personal dreams?

Evie Milton is from a high-born family. The women of her family are to marry someone nobel and carry on their upperclass lifestyle. Evie dreams of a life far different from what is expected of her. Will Evie follow her dreams or conform to high society?

The Bletchley Women will be published March 10, 2022.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter, for the honor of reviewing this extraordinary e-book.
