I really enjoyed this book it was well written with a good storyline that was gripping and engaging and well developed characters. It was suspenseful, mysterious and unpredictable, I couldnt put it down. A great read.
Phenomenal! So addictive I could not put it down. This is the first book in the series I've read and I have to go back and read them all now. I loved Jo, she is such a brilliant, well written character, and I also loved Diana as well. The storyline was so well developed, and I loved how I was completely surprised when the killer was revealed. Thank you to netgalley and the author for the free advanced copy of this book for my honest review.
Detective Jo Fournier has a difficult case on her hands. Someone is killing mothers suspected of child abuse in unusual ways. Jo and her team are on the case that has them chasing possible leads that seem to be too many and lead nowhere. At the same time, Jo is following an old interest in the death of a mass murderer that her boss doesn't want her looking into. With these 2 vengeance killing trails, there's non-stop action that keeps you guessing until the end. It was a wonderful ride.
WOW! M.M. Chouinard you've done it once again! You have written a book that kept me interested from start to finish. From the first chapter to the very last page. I absolutely loved how you brought back a character from "The Dancing Girls". The way you are able to have Jo investigating two murder cases throughout the book and your attention to details is amazing. When I don't want to put down my book I know it's a good one. Highly recommend.
This can be read as a stand alone - but why would you???? Dancing girls remains one of my favourite books of all time - so imagine how excited I was to see a reprise of the character we last saw shoving a serial killer to his death!
This was a joy to read! I love Jo and her team and when they are called to a crime scene where a young mum has been locked in a closet and left to die! It soon becomes clear that someone is vindicating abused children - but Jo’s focus keeps going back to the presumed suicides “conveniently” found in the same location of San Francisco! With a boss who has it in for her and a dreamy surgeon boyfriend, Jo has her hands full, but she cannot let it go! I really hope that M M Chouinard is already finishing the next instalment! Outstanding!!
I was so excited to find out that this was a follow on from The dancing girls , although would be able to read as a stand alone . I love Jo fournier and her team , her relationship with her partner Will is great . When they find a local woman dead in her closet they are amazed to find out that she had been nailed in and had no escape , it gets stranger when they discover she recently lost custody of her daughter after allegations of emotional abuse , Jo is also still investigating the death of a serial killer , they soon discover that another murder had occured who also was accused of child abuse , surely no coincidence . Fast paced and exciting another excellent read . 5 stars

M.M. Chouinard writes crime fiction that is beautifully crafted. She sprinkles a little bit of herself in her characters, and you will feel how passionate she is from the first paragraph. A brilliant mind, incredible researcher, and delightful human, M.M. Chouinard was destined to be an extraordinary author. She is a modern-day Agatha Christie.
“Paranoia was a friend she cuddled around in bed each night and allowed to kiss her awake each morning.”
Jo is back, with her dream team, still hoping to fly under the radar of her boss. Except now, someone is playing judge, jury, and executioner with alleged abusive mothers. Soon, Jo and Bob are racing against the clock to find the killer before it’s too late. But, a blast from the past makes a reappearance, and suddenly Jo is thrust into a battle she might not survive.
MY HEART IS RACING, AND I AM SLIGHTLY SWEATY. But this book was beyond brilliant. The imagery, the characters, the plot, the themes, the symbolism, Lopez- my heart is so content.
There were some very clever goose eggs hidden throughout this novel, so if you’ve read the previous books- be on the lookout! I giggled out loud at a few; M.M. Chouinard is so clever, I cannot handle it.
I love the storyline and growth Jo has taken throughout the series (so far). This book was no different, and our favorite leading lady had a lot to face up to and think about with this novel. Her mind and heart continue to blow my mind.
I love Arnett. He’s so moody and such a devoted partner to Jo. I love the dynamic they have, and the respect and trust between the pair are incredible. Arnett was a beacon of factuality and reason in this novel. And I love that in a moment where Jo needed to be reminded of who she is- it was Arnett who was there.
Lopez. Sigh. She was a shining star in this book. She has always been an incredible character, well-placed comedic relief, sass, wit, charm, and a rockstar-filled work ethic that makes her slightly terrifying, in the best way.
The imagery was so well choreographed. The use of light vs. dark, good vs. evil, right vs. wrong, personal justice vs. legal justice- it is simply astounding how Chouinard can wrap so many details into a scene while also challenging you and making you think.
This book has been the long-awaited return, and I could not be happier with how the return, the showdown, and the continuation happened. I was conflicted because I couldn’t put this book down- but I also wanted to put the book down and take my time.
The symbolism in this novel is outstandingly beautiful. Chouinard truly outdid herself and has painted such vivid glimpses into the various characters. I loved the alternating narrators and how the storylines got more twisted as the plot thickened.
Knowing what I now know, my imagination is running wild with where else this story could go- with such a diverse, strong, capable cast of characters- heaven knows this series could go on forever.
The ending was poetic and iconic- paying homage to the previous books and leaving the door open for book 6. The way everything comes together while falling apart was pure choreographed chaos. Get writing, Michelle!
This was a solid addition to the series. Itkept me interested throughout and im looking forward to reading more in the series
This is a fast pace thriller with quick short chapters.
The story keeps you on the edge of your seat it is full of twists and turns.
With all the WoW moments that blow your mind!
This is a cleverly written and well thought out plot. I was hooked from the beginning. The suspense builds up slowly, but the twist at the end will make you say Wowza!
M. M. Chouinard certainly knows how to pull in your attention and keep it there. I highly recommend this book.

Who doesn’t love a good serial killer thriller! When the body of single mother Melissa Rollins is found trapped inside a bedroom closet in her immaculate suburban home, Detective Jo Fournier races to the scene. The small town of Greenfern is sweltering in a heatwave, and Jo is horrified to find that Melissa’s heating was turned up to the max whilst she died of thirst. Who would kill a devoted mother in such a cruel way? This book was so intense and full of secrets!
I loved how this book captured my attention in the first chapter, the author went right in and did not slow down til the last sentence. I loved the characters and really enjoyed how it was written!
Good book! I saw that thus book is kind of connected to other books, I don't think I've read any but you can definitely read this book as a standalone! Thus book had suspense, intrigue, action and a few serial killers! I really enjoyed reading this one! I will definitely recommend reading it! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
