The series is developing well with some good dynamics between the characters. The story progressed fast with both past and present events side by side, but the suspense was suddenly from the left field. The final chapter is left open for the next book.
I’ll start by saying I like this character, but I am wondering how the author is going to twist it. This story had a fast pace and had me intrigued on who the killer was. But that blip at the end has me stressed. 🤣
Now I’m dying for the next book. I guess that says it all about the authors ability to suck you in and boom 💥.
If the author’s intention was to engage us immediately in the story, she definitely nailed it. The story grabbed my attention, and I couldn’t put it down. The premise of the story centers around Detective Durant who is trying to solve some horrific homicides and, at the same time. dealing with fact that she is the daughter of a serial killer and questioning whether she should be in law enforcement.
Durant is an astute investigator, and nothing gets past her. Perhaps it’s her past experiences with her father that have sharpened her skills. Her partner, Luke, who is aware about her history is the only one that can bring her down when she begins to falter. This story is not for the faint of heart! If you enjoy mystery and suspense, you’ll get your fix with this one! I highly recommend it! Another new author to add to my never-ending list.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for AC.
4.25⭐
The Girls in the Fire is an enthralling and detailed police procedural. That sees detective Harlow Durant and her partner called to picturesque Sercana Lake to investigate when a body is found on fire.
However, Harlow and Lucas' welcome isn't a warm one as the rest of the NYCB are already in town investigating a serial killer and one particular member of the team feels this latest case also belongs to them. But it soon becomes clear there is more than one killer in town and as the bodies pile up so do the suspects. Although there is one person in particular that can't help but catch their attention.
And with plenty of twists, shocks and flashbacks to Harlow's dramatic childhood with her serial killer father this was a great read. That genuinely kept me guessing and with another shock killing at the end I can't wait for book three and to find out where this
story goes next.
Would happily recommend.
The queen of cliffhanger!
Harlow, what did you see, what did you do?
In another small town, gripped by two serial killers, Harlow and Luca again race against time to find the killer before another women dies. In book 2 we see the bond of friendship between the pair grow and discover more of Harlow's past. As with book one, there is a final twist, leaving you on the edge, hoping you don't have to wait too long for the next book, because there is another killer out there, and he has his eye on Harlow.
Thank you so much Netgalley, Bookouture, and Dea Poirier for my gifted copy!
Synopsis:
On her second case, Detective Harlow Durant is confronted with the burnt bodies of three women - and the only connection between them is a man they used to date, and who doesn't have any reason to want them dead. Also, even though she's changed her name, her mother has found her. And she tells her that her dad is worried about her. Her dad, the serial killer.
My thoughts?
OH MY GOD, this was the second amazing book in this series, and Harlow is getting close to being my favorite fictional detective - after her partner Lucas, of course! I loved the mysterious aspects of this book and I couldn't put it down. Dea writes such awesome characters, and I really enjoy her style of writing. The whodunnit was tied up a bit too neatly, in my opinion - but, just as it was with the first book in the series, Find Me In The Dark, the final chapter made my jaw drop - literally!
This was my second book by this author, and I cannot wait for part three of the Harlow Durant series!
I think you can read the book as a standalone if you really want to, but I absolutely recommend to start with Find Me In The Dark, as the chapters about Harlow's past just make more sense that way!
Thanks for allowing me to read this Arc.
Two serial Killers in one book? I loved this book. Because there were two serial Killers it was so exciting and so easy to read. I devoured it. And even though it is the second in the series it can easily be read as a standalone. The real kicker for me was that ending!!! I can't wait for the next one!!! Definitely worth five stars.
This is the second in the series and the first book I have read by this author. It started off really well but then it became so slow. The bodies were still piling up but both teams didn't have a clue. Lucas and Harlow are on the trail of a gruesome killer but little does Harlow realise that this killer has Harlow firmly in his sights. This could have been a five star read except it stalled in places and the conclusion was a bit of an anticlimax.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
Wow! I can't wait to read the next in this series. Not one serial killer but two in the same book never read that before.

The primary detective in this book, Harlow Durant is decidedly unlikable. As is her opposite, a detective named Chad. The feud between the two basically ruined the novel for me.
The premise is intriguing. The daughter of a serial killer is now a cop who investigates murders. Sounds interesting, right? Too bad the personalities in the book were so offensive.
This book is well written and plotted. It is an easy read, and the pages go by rather quickly. The flashbacks are a little disconcerting. They come without warning.
On the whole, I did not enjoy this book. I don’t believe I’ll be reading another book by Ms. Poirier.
I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this book for me to read and review. The opinions expressed here are solely my own.
The Girls in the Fire is the first book I have read by this author. This is book two in the series, but I did not feel I missed anything by not reading the first book.
I liked the characters in the book and the storyline. It was pretty fast-paced and held my interest. There were some developmental issues with the wrong names of characters (Harlow said she dialed her boss but then was talking to her partner). The story's ending was a bit anti-climatic and too neatly wrapped up. The ending was also a bit implausible given the reasoning for the one serial killer.
Overall, it was a good read, and I would read more in this series.

Book two in this series, but for me it was the first one I read. So I had to pleasure to be introduced to Detective Durant and her partner Lucas and it was a huge pleasure. 😊
I have done this before not starting with book one, but this time I have to admit I was a bit lost in the very beginning. That’s of course my own stupid fault and it only makes me wanting to read the previous book too. In no time though I was totally immersed in this intriguing story. Not only was it creepy, but we also get a big part of Harlow Durant’s back story.
A small village where detectives from another department are not very welcome deals with some gruesome murders. This does make the job any easier, but Harlow is determined to dig as deep as needed to uncover the truth. She knows she has to act fast and when she decides to move up a gear, the killer seems to follow suit…
I loved this book and am so looking forward to the next part. I can hardly wait. 5 stars
Thank you
Harlow is back and she's on the hunt for not one but two serial killers! This is the second book in this series and I loved it better than the first book. So much suspense and mystery. Kept me captivated and reading into the night. I hope there are more books in this series to come because I absolutely love Harlow and Lucas! Great series and great book!!
The Girls in the Fire is a brilliant, clever, creepy, impressive, and perfectly paced story...Poirier knocked this one outta the park.
She weaves an exciting crime drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end. With an amazing cast of characters that hook you from the start.
A fast-paced thriller that worked really, really well for me as I enjoyed everything - the prose, the characters, the description.... And the ending was excellent.
Book one Find Me in the Dark was just as amazing, and I'm happy to say book two in the Detective Harlow Durant Series was just as fabulous as the first!
Bookouture,
Thank You for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
I will post my review closer to pub date.
This was a really enjoyable read that had me second guessing my assumptions all the way through. With the perfect amount of doubt on a variety of characters and a nice slow burn of action and intrigue, this is a series I look forward to continuing to read.
Harlow is a very interesting character whose dark past creates all sorts of anxiousness and drama in the present. She possesses a highly complex personality that draws you in, but keeps you wary of getting too close.
Overall, heck of a read and I look forward to more.
Goid book! This book had suspense, intrigue, action and a great who done it! The storyline was interesting and flowed nicely. I will recommend reading this book, it was worth reading! It wasn't one of my all time favorites but still worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
When the remains of a young woman are discovered on the edge of picturesque Saranac Lake, Detective Harlow Durant races to the scene. The area is already under watch after hikers discovered several bodies, stabbed to death in the national park. But as Harlow stares at the charred remnants of an innocent young life, she knows that this is a different killer with a very twisted motive.
Good book! This book was filled with suspense, action, intrigue, and lots of good detective work! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This series of books get better and better. I love the story of Harlow and the is she or isn’t she as good as she makes out and yet again we are drip fed her back story with her father the serial killer and every time these books end leaving me desperate for the next one. This one does not disappoint and with two serial killers and two cases happening at the same time it’s a race against time to stop two sadistic killers before anyone else gets hurt. This book had me on the edge of my seat and I’m still there waiting for the next one.
