A long overdue netgalley arc that has been sitting on my kindle for far too long! I enjoyed this book but it felt more like a mystery and not spooky ish thriller like I thought it would be. I love this author and her other books but I just thought this was very different from her normal writing and genre. It was very good though and interesting. I did enjoy reading it and really uncovering Joey and Paris’s stories and Jimmy’s death. I still plan to check out the other books this author has written and will write but this was a very different style book from here compared to what I’m used to.
I always enjoy Jennifer Hillier books and this one was great as well! The dual time lines and personalities made for a plot I thought worked very well. A lot of what made this book work for me was my draw to the main characters. I will say there was more heavy/dark subject matter that some may not like and the main twist wasn’t super shocking to me but I still really enjoyed it.
This was really unlike a lot of thrillers I've read, and I'm starting to become a fan of Jennifer Hillier. I loved the twist.
While I am not someone who usually reads thrillers, I was very happy that I went out of my genre comfort zone and read “Things We Do in the Dark” by Jennifer Hillier. From the beginning, I felt intrigued by the main character and that curiosity was stoked and maintained throughout the novel. There were, what I consider, to be two plot twists. I guessed the first fairly quickly and suspected the other, yet that didn’t take awake from the reading experience whatsoever. Following how Hillier weaves past and present together and the lives of the characters were engaging enough. I’ll have to dabble in the thriller genre more often!
Dark Secrets and Redemption
Things We Do in the Dark" by Jennifer Hillier revolves around Paris Peralta, a yoga teacher who is arrested in her own bathroom, covered in blood, and holding a straight razor next to her murdered celebrity husband. This is a compelling thriller that will appeal to fans of dark, psychological suspense. Jennifer Hillier’s exploration of deep and often disturbing themes adds authenticity to the narrative. The book’s strengths lie in its complex characters and the suspenseful, twisty plot. However, readers should be prepared for the heavy content, as the novel does not shy away from depicting the harsh realities of abuse and trauma.
Things We Do in the Dark is a gripping and emotionally intense read that showcases Jennifer Hillier's talent for creating dark, thrilling narratives.
Everything Jennifer Hillier touches turns to gold. I love everything she writes, and this one is no exception! This one may be my favorite!
All three storylines are entwined, but the change of POV was jolting, and it always took me a bit to adjust after the change. Three mysteries are connected to each storyline: Who murdered Jimmy Peralta, What happened the night Ruby Reyes committed murder, who is Paris Peralta, and what is she hiding from? A few other mysteries are mixed in.
I've heard great things about Jennifer Hillier, and was excited to receive an advance copy of Things We do in the dark. As an avid reader of thrillers, this wasn't exactly what I was expecting. There were a lot of similarities to other books I have read, and I don't know that the back and forth viewpoints really added much. I look forward to trying another book from her in the future which will hopefully live up to my expectations.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
I felt like there was a lot of predictability in this book but I was still wanting to read it to the end to see if I was correct. I enjoyed some of the characters and liked disliking Ruby. I was hoping for the best for Paris. It was a quick read that is worth the time. I look forward to reading more Jennifer Hillier books.
This is one of my favorite authors, but I have to be honest, this was not my most favorite story. I didn't connect with the characters as much as her other books, but recognize this was still a page turner that I needed to know what happened in the end. It took me awhile to get through, but encourage readers to stick with it as the story twists and turns and picks up about about half way through. I liked the dual perspective from the characters from both present day and past day experiences. The story was easy to follow and there were some hard parts to get through. I guess I can appreciate and understand why there are trigger warnings on some stories and books now, not that they would have kept me from reading. So for those that want a trigger warning, know there's a bit of parental abandonment, mental and child sexual abuse situations in the storyline. I appreciated the ending and am glad I finished this story. If this is your first story written by this author, I would say start with one of her others, and come back to this one.
While this book was very predictable, and not my favorite Hillier book, I still had so much fun with this book!
In this story, Paris Peralta is accused of killing her husband, who is a well known celebrity. He is found dead in the bathroom while she is holding a razor- it can't get worse looking than that right?
Did she do it? Did she not? What really happened? That's what we are trying to figure out.
I love that this book switches between past and present timelines and also had a small podcast element to it.
This novel is a medium paced read, but set at a steady pace where reveals happen enough that keep the reader involved. I love Mrs. Hillier, and will read anything she writes!
This was just okay for me. The twists and turns were a little predictable, the story blurs with others that are similar, but the writing was engrossing. Pick it up if you're a thriller junkie, but don't expect anything earth shattering.
This latest book from Jennifer Hillier is soooo damn good!!!!!!!!! I couldn't put it down and I bet you won't be able to either!!!!!
I am a huge fan of Jennifer Hillier. Although I loved Jar of Hearts and Little Secrets more, Things We Do in the Dark was still very good.
I was kept in suspense for most of the book. However, it was a little predictable. This book has great character development and I loved the plot.
Thank you NetGalley for my free copy!
*NetGalley review*
This one had so many layers; maybe too many layers. I felt like while I saw how they fit in and why the storylines were intertwined, I don't think they meshed well together. While parts of it were very disturbing (read trigger warnings), it didn't read like a thriller to me. It read like family drama with some ominous undertones. This is my first Hillier book and I've heard amazing things, so I will be trying her again. Thank you to NetGalley, Jennifer Hillier, and St. Martin's Press for allowing me to read Things We Do in the Dark in exchange for an honest review.
This thriller started out strong, but lost me about halfway through. I finished it, but didn't absolutely love it. I will continue to read Jennifer Hillier and I really enjoyed the book prior to this.
Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for the advanced reader copy of the latest thriller by Jennifer Hillier. All opinions are my own.
I think Jennifer Hillier creates the strongest female protagonists in fiction today, she could literally teach a class on it. They are tough but vulnerable, super clever and resourceful, and always have the best lines.
Paris Peralta is no different, if anything she's the best one yet!! Paris is found by her dead husband's side the morning after his death, and although arrested for his murder, she's innocent...at least of THIS murder. Her true identity is about to be unmasked by a woman from her past who is out for vengeance, and will stop at nothing to get it.
This was the second book I've read by this author and she is easily becoming a new go-to author for me. This book kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I couldn't put this book down. Definitely a great read and highly recommend.
5 Stars!
All the stars!!
Another great read from Jennifer Hillier!
"Jar of Hearts" was my first Jennifer Hillier novel. I thought it was terrific. Then I read "Little Secrets" and LOVED it. So I was super excited to read "Things We Do in the Dark". I'd hoped I wouldn't be let down.
I wasn't let down at all. There are mixed reviews for this novel and of course we all have a right to our own opinion. In my opinion, this was a very good read.
I thought the story flowed well and I thought the characters were complex and dynamic.
An excellent psychological suspense novel from one of my favorite authors!
"Things We Do in the Dark" by Jennifer Hillier is just not for me. I tried listening to the book and reading the digital ARC, but I couldn't finish this one. I wanted to like the book and the author because so many people have recommended the books to me, but unfortunately, this is a DNF.
