Buckle up! What a ride this book was. So many twists. Loved It. The characters are great. Love the writing style. The book is written in 6 parts. The story was so good and I was surprised at the ending. You will not be disappointed! Enjoy!
Overall I found this to be a pretty good book, as are Jennifer Hillier’s others. There were a few things that were a little predictable, which I don’t usually like when reading thrillers, but the story was still engaging and suspenseful. What Joey and Paris go through is just so hard to imagine happening to anyone.
First off, this should be classified as mystery not thriller because there certainly weren’t any thrills. And it is a slowwww burn kinda mystery. It took forever for me to get into and there were many times where I just wanted to abandon it. Overall it was an ok read but was lacklustre in my opinion.
Thank you to Jennifer Hillier, St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for the ARC copy.
I have recently read Jennifer Hillier’s previous books and absolutely loved them, so I was super excited to get a chance to read this one too. It was really good! I liked the main characters, the plot lines were good and the twists and turns were unexpected. I did find it a little slower than Hillier’s previous two novels, in that I was able to put this one down, whereas the other two novels I couldn’t stop reading. However, it was still a great thriller and I recommend thriller lovers read this one, especially if you loved Hillier’s previous books!
This book releases on July 19, 2022 and I am excited to see it come out in paperback!
Another hit it out of the park home run by one of my favourite authors. I loved the dark gritty story. The characters were amazing . The parallel story lines that collided took my breath away. This was suspenseful , well written and had explosive twists and turns. I could not put this down, a roller coast ride to say the least!
Another phenomenal story from the brilliant Jennifer Hillier! Every book I’ve read by her has been a 4-5 star read, and she has knocked it out of the park yet again!! Hillier is truly a powerhouse in the thriller genre. This book is twisty, suspenseful, and original. I don’t want to spoil anything, I highly recommend going in blind, but let me just tell ya- It’s AMAZING. 4.5 stars from me!!! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my advanced copy :)
jenniferhillierbooks does it again . Gripping , page turning, suspense filled brilliance.
This book follows Paris through the murder charge of her husband and her life before her husband. It also follows drew a podcaster / journalist , and Ice queen Ruby along with her daughter joey. There were 3 different twists I didn't see coming at all. Fantastic book I couldn't put it down . The back story for all the characters are amazing, it really makes you connect with them. The trauma and trauma response from Joey's life is so perfectly written you can feel it with every fiber of your being.
WOW! This was a roller coaster ride from the first to the last chapter! Jennifer Hillier knows how to keep the reader turning pages. Loved these characters (even the bad ones). She is now one of my auto-buy authors. You must read this when it comes out in July. So Good!
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in advance!
Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier will no doubt be one of my favorite books of 2022. It's so hard to write a review without giving anything away. I loved the writing, the plot, the character arcs—and most of all, every single twist and turn. This was an unpredictable novel by a fantastic author. Highly recommend!
Compulsive! Highly readable! Engaging!
This is not your average mystery thriller folks! Hillier crafts a twisted tale with very human characters…each flawed in their own way.
Perhaps what Hillier does best here, is give voice to Joey and Paris; young women owning their own autonomy in different ways as they age.
Things We Do In the Dark is a dark story. Trauma is splayed open for the reader to see. People are complicated and when written well, these complications give texture to characters like we see here.
While not all that surprising, the book is so well plotted and crafted the ability to spot the twists likely won’t matter much.
I recommend this book to anyone just wanting a GREAT story. At its core, that’s what this is—a great story.
Paris Peralta is found covered in blood, holding a razor, with her celebrity older husband dead in the bathtub and is quickly arrested for his murder. Meanwhile, in Canada, Ruby Reyes is about to be paroled for the vicious stabbing of her husband 25 years earlier. And Paris’s secrets are about to come tumbling out. That’s the intriguing premise of Things We Do In The Dark, and to say any more would spoil this tense, tightly woven story that will have you speeding through the pages. There’s almost two stories told her, and the reader is kept spellbound as you anxiously read on to see how they’re connected. Masterfully told with sharp writing and dialogue, this is a gripping, suspenseful novel that you honestly can’t put down. Absolutely loved this one! I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
After seeing & hearing many raving reviews of Jar of Hearts a book by Jennifer Hillier has been on my list for a while now.
When I discovered Things We Do In The Dark, I was super excited and I guess we can say that this is a #BookstagramMadeMeDoIt 😅
Things We Do In The Dark is how a thriller should be done: it is a unique, well researched story with razor-sharp characters (I love love love the main character Paris and felt so much with her!) & an unpredictable plot 👏👏
Something else I wanted to mention here is that this is so much more than a thriller; it’s also an emotional, heartbreaking and very human story, that touched me on many levels ❤️🩹
This was unputdownable for me, so pro-tip: once you start this, you probably want to make sure you allocate enough time, as you probably just want to keep reading and learn how all the different parts (told by different POVs) of the story will connect.
On another note about the different parts, I loved how the author kicked off the parts with lyrics from popular songs from the 90s 🎶
Now onto the verdict…this was my first Jennifer Hillier and will definitely not be my last 🤩 I also want to go ahead and order all of her other books now 😅
Thank you so much to NetGalley & St. Martins Press for my ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Things We Do In The Dark is expected to be out on July 19 2022.
Jennifer Hillier is amazing, This is the second book I have read by her and she will now become an auto read author for me! I loved this book. Alternating timelines as points you are sometimes tricky, but these transitions were done seamlessly by Jennifer. The characters and the story in this book were both brilliant. The writing excellent. This book held my attention the whole time. I loved the secrets, the twists and turns, and of course the ending. I definitely recommend this book to everyone out there. Thank you NetGalley and Minotaur books for the advanced electronic copy of Things We Do In The Dark. 5 stars all the way on this one,
Things We Do in the dark is a legal drama that starts off with a bang. Paris Peralta is arrested for the murder of her husband, Jimmy Peralta, when the police find him dead in their home, Paris covered in his blood. Jimmy was a famous comedian, and it appears like she killed him for his money, although Paris claims innocence.
The book starts off great - it hooks you right in with a big, dramatic scene and some courtroom suspense. However, the initial momentum it creates quickly gets loses steam in seemingly endless backstory about Paris's childhood and relationship with her mother. This went on for so long that it really made it difficult for me to want to pick up the book again. There's too many subplots that really have nothing to do with what originally pulled me into the story that it made the whole book feel convoluted.
Overall, the story was somewhat predictable and I found the journey to the end pretty tedious.
What can I say but - WOW! I was elated to receive the opportunity to review Jennifer Hillier's latest novel after absolutely LOVING her 2020 novel "Little Secrets". And "Things We Do in the Dark" definitely did not disappoint! Such a unique, fun read that takes you on quite a journey before a very satisfying end.
Paris just found her older husband dead and wakes up surrounded by police telling her to drop her weapon. What weapon?! As she deals with her arrest, she also begins receiving notes in her husband's fan mail that seem to come from a past enemy...what is going on? Just as I was excited to begin diving into this mystery, Part Two began and I found myself meeting a famous podcast director working on a new season about convicted murderer Ruby Reyes. I found myself briefly frustrated with the new direction, but I was soon engrossed and excited to find how the plots would intersect! We are taken on a generation-long journey, and the ride does not disappoint. I was continually surprised and thrilled at how excited I was to be reading! The length is perfect and gives plenty of time to really connect with all the characters - you'll find yourself loving AND hating them!
This is the freshest novel I've read in quite awhile. The plot is fascinating, I was continually surprised, and I felt a true feelings while reading. I was so thrilled with the ending, and yet so sad to see it end. If you buy one book this summer, make it "Things We Do in the Dark" - you won't be disappointed! One of the great thriller writers of our time!
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in return for a review. All opinions are very much my own.
I was so thrilled to be able to read this book! "Things We Do in the Dark" is a twisty, fast paced thriller that kept me guessing. I absolutely love when I don't "figure it out". I loved the dual storylines that eventually came together. 5 amazing stars for this novel!
Here's the thing: I love thrillers, normally psychological, and legal thrillers. While this one hooked me from page one, once it gets a few chapters in, the story gets lost and muddled with the past. Then it starts picking up again, and everything from the past ties into the present, it makes sense, but I feel like it could have been executed better.
I found it very predictable, so it didn't make me guess much, but it was a decent book all in all.
Yet another excellent book by Jennifer Hillier. Hillier manages the details of this intricately twisty plot with an expert hand. Highly recommended.
It’s no surprise I’m giving this book all the stars. This is the third book I’ve read from Hillier, and just like the other two, this one grips you right from the beginning. It’s packed with layers that you get to peel back as you read further. Full of twists, that leave you suspicious of almost everyone, and for a second you think you have it all figured out. Until you don’t. The past and present are perfectly woven together. The main character has her flaws, with an incredibly heartbreaking backstory, that still has you rooting for her. This is not your typical husband/wife murder thriller, as there is much more to this twisted story. The ending is perfectly wrapped up.
Hillier has a way with writing thrillers unlike any other, and for that, she is an “auto-buy” for me.
A fun, twisting and turning suspense story. This was just pure joy to read. A nice escape from heavier fare.
