This was such a lovely story. Zadie and Finn’s relationship is such a wonderful depiction of sisterhood and how strong that bond can be, even if you are separated for a long time. This has a whimsical feel to it, and these girls search for their mom was beautiful and captivating. I’m definitely looking forward to purchasing a copy when it releases!
The Wilder women all possess unique, unexplainable gifts that add a touch of magic to their lives. Eldest sister Zadie, unexpectedly pregnant has always received premonitions. She has cut herself off from this gift because it frightened her. Younger sister Finn, freshly graduated from high school, can feel other peoples’ discarded memories. Their mother, Nora, disappeared five years ago and they wonder if her disappearance is related to magic that she may have had. The sisters set off on a road trip to discover what happened to their mother. Along the way, they meet an endless cast of fascinating characters and learn about life, the world, and themselves.
This book was funny and heartbreaking and exciting and magical all at once. An exploration of motherhood, of family, of being different, and of resilience.
The Wilderwomen is a story of two sisters on a journey to find their mom who disappeared 5 years ago. Zadie is newly single and pregnant; a little lost and feeling alone in the world. Finn lives with her wonderful foster parents and is about to start college. The Wilder women each have a special gift. Zadie is a psychic and Finn experiences echos - living someone else’s memories.
When the two sisters are supposed to leave for a beach vacation, Finn instead suggests they try to find their mom. Using nothing but their gifts to guide them, the sisters set out to follow the path their mom may have taken 5 years ago when she left them. Along the way, they mend their own relationship and discover a lot about themselves.
I really enjoyed the fantasy aspect of this book. It was woven in nicely and added a unique element to the mystery of the missing Nora Wilder. I will definitely read more of Ruth Emmie Lang in the future!
Thanks to #NetGalley, Ruth Emmie Lang, and St. Martin’s Press for an ARC of #TheWilderwomen in exchange for an honest review.
This is one of the most unique books I have read in a long time. It mixes genres in a way I've never seen!
I read this book in one sitting, it drew me in and kept me reading until the early morning hours, work and plans be damned
Sisters Zadie and Finn are as opposite as they come - including in their special abilities. Zadie can see into the future while Finn can relive the past memories of others. Can they use their gifts to find their mother who has disappeared 5 years earlier without a trace?
This was a magical read about the journey of the two sisters and the loss of their mother. It explores their relationships not only with each other but also with their gifts. Personally, I think Ruth Emmie Lang’s previous novel Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance had a more developed plot line and characters (seriously, pick that one up as well!). However, I think readers who enjoy women’s fiction and magical realism will have a great time with this one.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this novel in exchange for my review!
Rounding this up from 4.5. This book was pure magic! I loved it. I didn’t know what to expect going in but it was a beautiful tale about 2 sisters trying to reconnect after they were torn apart when their mom disappeared. They set out to find her nearly 5 years later. I mean, I don’t know what else to say. This story hit every note. With some mystery, magical elements, self discovery and that ending. Definitely a must read in 2022

From the start, it isn't hard to tell that The Wilderwomen is going to be a good book. Lang's writing style has you hypnotized every time you get immersed in it. The book has an intriguing plot that keeps you wondering.
My biggest issue was that I'd enjoy it while I was reading it, but then life would happen and I would have to put the book away and it would be all I could do to get myself wanting to pick it up again. I'm not a mood reader, which may have been a bit unfair to the book. I think I needed it to be more fast paced than it was.
I highly recommend this to people who like magical realism, Sasha Peyton Smith's writing style but want it more adult, Markus Zusak and Anthony Doerr's writing style but want a happier book that isn't so wordy, or those who just plain like interesting people with unique powers.
Zadie and Finn are two sisters who share a common question - why did their mom leave them? However, this unfortunate circumstance isn't the only thing the have in common. Each sister possesses a 'gift'; Zadie can see into the future, and Finn can feel the memories left behind by people. Forced to separate when they were abandoned, Zadie and Finn find themselves back on the track to find their mother, Nora. Older sister Zadie remembers some odd behavior before she left them and is now starting to see some of the same characteristics in Finn - did their mother have a 'gift' that in turn acted against her and her ability to be a mother? Was she forced to leave by an unexplained power? Is Finn safe?
Ruth Emmie Lane approaches us with an exciting and curious story about the unknown. She makes us open our minds and imaginations to the possibility of psychic powers and forces beyond our control. I loved her creativity in immersing us in this new realm. I enjoyed seeing the characters of Finn and Zadie grow and connect throughout the story. It was so crucial for them to uncover the truth, yet neither of them new to what extent.
I wish I could give this book a 3.5/5. I really wanted to LOVE it. However, I found myself feeling like I just didn't get it. And this honestly may just be a limit of my own mind in which I found myself trying to reason each development as the story progressed. As much as i loved the ending, I left feeling a little confused. However, I did love her writing style and will definitely be reading 'Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstances'!
I absolutely fell in love with this book and pretty much every character within it. It was definitely a page turner and I loved finding out what was going to happen next or at least trying to do so. The book is so well written.
Upon beginning The Wilderwomen, I was expecting an exciting and heart wrenching adventure of two sisters to find their mom. Although I loved the sister's relationship and appreciated a story focused on that relationship this book was not the captivating adventure I expected. Zadie and Finn are not your normal sisters, each had a special ability, one can see the past the other the future. One embraces her gift while the other shuns her's. Despite their differences the sisters embark on a journey to discover what happened to their mom who seemingly vanished 5 years earlier.
I truly loved the sister dynamic that is focused on throughout the book; however, the monotonous road trip and seemingly far too perfect accidental discoveries tarnished my overall opinion of the story. I found myself thinking "Of all the places they could end up how did they always end up in the right spot?" I understand that some of it was due to their abilities but it can't all be explained by that. I needed more tension and uncertainty! I also felt as if the magical elements of many of the side characters was somewhat unnecessary. Maybe the author was making the point that we are more similar than we might seem but it didn't add to the story in my opinion. I also didn't understand the point of introducing some of the characters, in particular Joel seemed superfluous.
Even though this was an incredibly slow read for me, I was invested in the characters and did want to find out what happened to their mom! Sadly, I was ultimately disappointed by the reveal. I am happy with how the story ended but it was much more anticlimactic than I had hoped. Overall, this was an okay read. I truly did enjoy the sisters and seeing their relationship ebb and flow but was left underwhelmed by the story.

I had high expectations for this book as I love Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstances. And it did not disappoint! It is a magical story about a mother and her 2 daughters and how they are all trying to find their path. When Finn and Zadie’s mother disappears the sisters can’t seem to move forward with their lives until they know some answers. An adventure and a stripping down of their relationship ensues. With help from strangers and friends along the way, it takes them on a road trip that will change their lives.
Filled with beautiful nature and how some can connect with it, a story that reads like a song, unfolds.
An absolute must read by an amazing story teller, Ruth Emmie Lang.
I was a little confused to start with because of all the metaphors but I eventually found myself getting lost in this incredible book! Definitely recommend!
The Wilderwomen is about Zadie and Finn, two young women who have a sixth sense - Zadie has premonitions about the future and Finn can see "echoes" of other people's memories. Their mother has gone missing five years previously, and the two sisters go on a journey to try to find her.
I loved the main characters, Zadie and Finn. They were both complex female characters who made mistakes and blamed themselves and others for all that happened. Add in the magical element of their psychic abilities, and I was sold. I really liked the complexity of their relationship with one another and with their mom, Nora. Nora was also an interesting character, although we spent much less time with her than with her daughters. Side characters such as Joel and Myron were also well developed and interesting, so I think all the characters in this book were realistic and fun to read about.
The plot was also captivating (for the most part). I love a good road trip story, as well as a good adventure, and this ticked off both of those boxes. I also liked the glimpses into the past we got, although I do think that the pacing could have been improved upon for those bits. The part of this book that fell a little flat for me was the ending. I feel like the whole story was so well-crafted and explained in such an easy way to understand, that the ending felt a little bit confusing, and it didn't feel like the payoff I had been waiting for.
Overall, I really did enjoy this book, especially the way it depicted the mother-daughter and sister relationships. The family dynamics were interesting enough on their own, but then with the added magical realism, it was a book that really drew me in. I just wish the pacing had been a little bit more consistent!
I’ve been waiting patiently for a new book from R.E.L. ever since LOVING Beasts Of Extraordinary Circumstance 4 years ago. It’s one of my all time faves so my expectations were high for The Wilderwomen. I’m happy to say it delivers! This book is about two sisters who embark on a journey to find their mom who walked away from them mysteriously 5 years ago. But Finn and Zadie are extraordinary in that each sister has a sixth sense which may help or hurt them along the way.
This book is an easy read, full of hurt, hope and heart. A mother/daughter trope sucks me in every time. Mix that with a bit of magical realism and I am here for it!
This is a book that will stay with me for quite some time. Beautifully told, this book will have me thinking and talking about it for years to come.
Realism meets fantasy. I loved Zadie and Finn’s relationship and was super intrigued by their “powers”
When you realize this is a mystery as their mother is missing you can’t help but to want to reach the end to see how it all turns out. What really happened to Nora?
A happy ending and already beginning to recommend.
The past few months I've been in a bit of a reading slump. Wilderwomen helped pull me out of that. I flew through this book. I found myself relating to both of the sisters, and I loved following along on their journey.
The only real issue I had with the book is that there are some inconsistencies. For example, in one chapter talks about Zadie wanting to watch TV before she did her homework. Two pages later, the books mentions that Zadie had finished all of her homework in school. Other than little things like that, it's a great book and I definitely recommend!
This is a beautiful read for lovers of family dynamics and magical realism! If you don't mind a meandering storyline, this is good choice. It's a unique and creative story. Despite the plethora of magical realism elements, this is ultimately a story about the bond and relationship between sisters.
The sisters' varying personalities shone throughout the story. They were so many colorful characters to enjoy too, but sometimes they felt a bit fleeting in their development or as if they were there for color not plot. The hunt for their mother is engaging, but I found the pacing frustrating. The book could have skipped or sped through a number of sections.

eclectic sisters with six senses go on an adventure across the country. This story had me invested until the very end. Being the middle child I really appreciated the sisterly bond Zadie and Finn have despite being separated for 5 years. You meet so many cool characters along the way which kept the story exciting. A great read overall
Zadie and Finn Wilder are special. Both sisters have a gift - Zadie can see the future and Finn has "echoes" where she can feel and see memories of other people. Their mother, Nora, has a gift too - but her daughters don't know what it is. Zadie and Finn have a fun life with their mom - dying their hair blue and camping at unique campgrounds. Then one day their eccentric mom disappears.
Several years later, Finn is graduating high school and Zadie is in a rut. When Finn has an echo in the bird sanctuary at the zoo, she formulates a plan to find their mom. Reluctant, Zadie decides to come along and they set off in the middle of the night. With no evidence of where their mom went, they must allow their special gifts to lead the way and hopefully find their mom in the end.
This book is amazing. It's filled with fun characters, humorous situations, and emotion. I loved how the sisters met new people along their trip, learned new things about themselves, and strengthened their bond with one another. The only reason I am giving this four stars is because there were times where I felt as though the book was slow. It felt as though it dwelled in a few spots and could have sped up a little.
