Johnny Boo Goes to School is a brightly-colored story that has a rollicking stream of consciousness vibe.Visually it looks like a little kid's book, but a middle grader will find things to like. One character is already growing a mustache, and he wants to study Lepidopterology. That word is explained as 'the study of butterflies.' Quirky to the max.
The Johnny Boo books are a great series to start emerging readers with. The humor is sophisticated enough for up to 4th grade, but they are easy for those still developing skills to read. This title continues the silliness and humor of the characters of the previous stories and did not disappoint. My son had visual tracking issues when he first started to read, and the layout and easy-to-read text/font meant these were the first books he was able to read on his own.
This is book 13 in the series and it still feels as fresh as book number one. Johnny boo and squiggles are on their way to school but don’t know what school is or what the point of it is. But they do know they need an apple on their head. What is school? What is 2+2? Is the ice cream monster still a monster, or what about the big mean boy? It’s nice to see how the characters age and don’t age and how the story moves forward while being a story for the earliest of graphic novel readers. Book was a lot of fun and I can’t wait for the next one.
