Trains are amazing. American needs more trains and less cars. This book goes continent by continent by continent to show everything from commuter trains to luxury cruisers and their routes. Additionally the book shows stations, train interiors, and incredible stretches of track. The full color photographs are accompanied by brief descriptions that help to orient the reader. I was pleased to see some train stations I’ve visited and it gave me some ideas for future travel that could be accomplished by train. It was interesting to see how the style of train varied from region to region as well as the differences in technology.
Thank you to Amber Books and NetGalley for the ARC.

Yet one more book for me to enjoy in this publisher's "google search-friendly subtitles are for wusses" series, this guides us round the world's more notable and picturesque railway lines. It's clear from the get-go that it's not just the scenery that's of concern, for we also see station architecture, the minutiae of the early technology and signalling, and so much more in the visuals, while the friendly captions that make the bulk of the text do get to itemising the wheel configurations, such as your 2-8-0s and the like. I think this all amounts to a book well suited to accompany the armchair traveller on their next sojourn, and as a buff-friendly eye-opener for the expert to have a nice browse. The quantity of engines that are a hundred years old or thereabouts should at least be quite heartening to all. Not flawless, for once – that "Hiram Bingham" train is half off the page – this is still a welcome volume and deserving of four stars. Just beware of what edition you're getting, mind, as usual with these books – early copies are A4, reprints are 6x4 (in old currency).

Who doesn't love trains? A few months ago I spent the night in a mining town in Nevada after exploring Great Basin National Park. We stopped at the historic rail depot and were surprised when visitors started showing up to see an historic steam train chug into the station. We all watched as it slowly backing up coupling with another car. We were mesmerized watching the conductor fill the engine with water to make steam. This is the power and fascination of trains.

Rail Journeys is a book celebrating trains, train stations and depots. It is filled with beautiful photos of different types of trains and train stations. The book is broken in to sections by continents. In the US I've been to Silverton, CO seeing the train that takes tourists on a scene ride through the Rocky Mountains. I've visited the beautiful Grand Central Station in NYC and Union station in Washington DC. In Europe where riding trains is a great way to travel I've gone from Budapest to Berlin with stops in Prague and Vienna. And crisscrossing Italy via train traveling to Venice, Florence, Pisa and Rome. This book brought back fond memories and gave me new ideas for future train travels. I especially want to ride a bullet train in Japan. The inclusion of trains in Asia, Africa and South America made the book less Eurocentric.

This is a great photo book for any train fan. Thank you to NetGalley and Amber Books for a temporary eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Stunning photos and enlightening descriptions. Rail Journeys by David Ross is exactly what I was hoping for: an opportunity to see some of the truly unique and varied adventures to be had on this tried-and-true mode of transportation. I enjoyed reading and learning about so many places, but mostly, I enjoyed just looking at the photographs and allowing my imagination to take over. Chapters are broken up by continent, so feel free to pick your adventure accordingly!

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.

Inspiring collection of trains around the world. A book that makes you want to book a train-cation in an exotic country (or even a local one) and visit all the beautiful train stations. The train cars give a nostalgic feel of intrigue and adventure.

Rail Journeys is a wonderful collection of train and station photographs from around the world. The book is well organized and starts with North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and finally Asia. Each section has a short introduction detailing the history of the railroad in that region followed by several photographs including facts and commentary. I found this book to be very appealing with many gorgeous photographs. My husband and I have always wanted to take a railway tour such as through the Rockies, but now I see I should consider the Alaskan one too! They all have amazing scenery and it's interesting to see the differing stations in various regions. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves trains and also as a lovely coffee table or waiting room tabletop book.

What a great collection of photos and facts about railways and trains around the world. My locomotive loving child and I read this book together and really enjoyed browsing the images and learning facts about transportation history. We would have liked for there to be more variety of geographical locations, especially for the United States. Not a book you'd likely read more than once, but still informational and appealing all the same.
