This is a light, entertaining read about a party girl who meets a grump. Overall, I enjoyed the book. There were a couple of items I wasn’t a fan of (specifically the "f*ckboy" talk) but it had more to do with me than how the book was written. I really like the writing style and development of the characters.
I look forward to reading more from Sonia Palermo in the future.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Star Rating- 4
Honestly i liked this a whole lot more that i expected. I do think that were some parts I didn't enjoy at all, but then again they weren't that big of a deal.
Characters- Sophia made my heart happy, she was kind, caring, and stayed true to herself. She was also most definitely a badass and i will stand by that till the end of time. Danny scared me a tad bit at the start but i feel like all love interests do, so there isn't much surprise there. Eventually he chilled out and i started to like him a bit more. I also adored the side characters and wished I got to seem more of them.
Plot- The plot of this book was very character and story based, which was nice. The pacing was also quite well as it was fast while being a short book.
What I liked- I loved the spacing, and the romance between Sophia and Danny. As well as the side characters.
What I didn't Like- I wish we saw more of the side characters, but it wasn't about them, so I understand why they weren't present as much.
I loved this it was so good! The author did great job! Do not let the sweet looking cover fool you! I am so glad I grabbed this book! 🙌 👏👏
Hot Girl Summer by Sonia Palermo was my most recent current read & having it finished it yesterday.. it was for sure a storyline that matched the cover!
When you look at the cover, you can’t help but think of a party girl & the stance of both characters reflect the will they won’t they trope. Both main characters were incredibly fun to read and though it dealt with some triggering topics such as rape and anorexia, it was a book very much relevant to this day and age with social media.
It was a short read & although some instances felt a little cringey, it was for sure an entertaining read!
DNF - did not finish; stopped reading at 27% mark.
I really tried to give this book a chance but I just couldn’t get into it.
I didn’t particularly like the main character - the whole premise of the book is that she’s misunderstood because everyone thinks she’s a “shallow flake”… and then I found myself thinking the same thing. There just wasn’t enough depth to the characters (at least up until I stopped reading), so I had trouble rooting for her.
Since I did not finish the book, I am giving it 2 stars (I hate giving 1 star and tanking an author’s rating).
Such a good book! If your in for some swoon worthy romance the this book is prefect for you. I love the plot and characters & the story was not dragging at all. Love it!
Oh my god, this book put me in such a reading slump and it took me forever to get through. When I considered DNF’ing it I was about half way through so decided to continue reading it - I hated it.
I didn’t fall in love with the characters AT ALL and thought it was very insta love - which I don’t usually mind, but this had no build up what-so-ever. I feel like there was also not really a plot to the story and the main characters sister (Kiki) her illness didn’t seem to add much to the book other than to fill out more pages.
Personally I would avoid this one.
This story was a well written one and the romance was interesting. I will say that I had a hard time connecting with the main character outside of her love for yoga (as I am a practitioner and instructor) but it is hard for me to pin down what it is that makes it tough for me to connect to her. The steam was good as well as the friendships/support system that the main character had.
I do wish that there was some sort of advisory to the reader that should they want to try any of the poses & breathing exercises mentioned, that they should consult their therapist, doctor and a certified yoga teacher because the ones mentioned could trigger people who have moderate to severe anxiety. It would've been nice to see alternatives offered in an addendum. if anything.

F**kboy tears’
4.5 stars
That opening line was enough to have me hooked and devouring this book in one sitting. It was short, sweet and full of all my favourite things in a romance book and it was made just that little bit extra special by being set somewhere close to home with all that cocky British sarcasm we love so much. I honestly can’t believe this is a debut novel I had so much fun reading it and would love to see more from this author.
These characters are RELATABLE and that’s honestly one thing I love so much in romance novels. This book was about relationships and it really dived into the inner workings of how many of our brains work in the modern dating world. It’s just felt so honest and genuine, Sophia has had a lot of struggles so seeing her bite the bullet and take what she wants from life was great. She stood up for herself and you really got a lot of insight into the more mental aspect of what it’s like dating and making yourself vulnerable
I loved the friendships, Lucas really is the definition of a cinnamon roll and I loved Stefan and James. I appreciated the way that conflicts were genuinely resolved too, like April and Sophia’s early on, it wasn’t half arsed or bitchy and it made me appreciate their friendship so much more. I would have liked some closure with Ryan as I felt like that waaa just kinda left. Adored the relationship between Kiki and Sophia too, their bond as sisters was great and I loved learning more about Kiki and seeing her working on her recovery.
Now, Danny, my man. I loved their dynamic from the beginning and watching their relationship develop was 👌 I loved that in the first couple of chapters that I wasn’t quite sure who the love interest was going to be too which was fun! They had a rocky and less that sweet start but these two together had great chemistry and I was 1000% rooting for them. Yes to more wholesome romance books please, I will read them everyday!
As always these books cover some very heavy real life topics at times and is for a mature audience so check trigger warnings (which were very thoroughly detailed at the start of the book!) before reading. (Some of the big ones - eating disorder, talk of off page drink spiking, divorce)
Sophia and Danny become friends-with-attraction as each one finds the other intriguing yet unattainable. Fighting off the feelings that accumulate while getting to know the unfiltered and real person they normally hide from others as self-protection makes the pull seem harder to fight off. Both are slightly damaged from past experiences and relationships that once the walls start coming down so does their willpower and that makes it an even better read. Though set in England it wasn't an unrelatable read that I sometimes find when reading some books by British authors in particular. Had a sexy build up that I think we all got a little frustrated, but I think we all have been there at one point.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley for my honest opinion.
I liked the playgirl MC although the whole "I don't want to trust anyone but just sleep with people I don't even like" trope was cliché. The romance didn't hit me right for some reason. It just seemed really insta and there wasn't any chemistry at all. The writing was alright I guess but the story needed a better execution. I loved Kiki. The anorexic rep was really, really good and I loved how the author didn't glamorise it or make it sound easy to recover from.
My favourite character was Penny I think! I absolutely love dogs. Oh and I wish the whole friendship drama could have been resolved in a better way. I feel like the author left a lot of loose ends there. Ryan was an interesting character although deplorable. There was a scene where he's hiding something from the MC and I wished we'd gotten to know exactly what so yes the friendship drama needed better execution as well.
I rounded it off to 3 because I liked the writing style. It was fun and I loved being in the MC's head. But I didn't like the romance at all sadly.
This book was read thanks to NetGalley.
It had romance and it had steamy moments which was what promised so we are okay with that, the problem as often happens with debut novels is that the author wrote too much sub plot that we tend to lost it, is not a bad book but it could have been better.
tw: eating disorders.
I really, really, really wanted to like this book. I think it has a cute title, great cover, and overall I thought it would be a cute book. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
All of the characters in this book are extremely toxic. I was not rooting for a single character in this book. In fact, I was hoping things did not work between Sophia and Daniel. The only character I did like in this book Sophia's sister, who was struggling with an eating disorder. But even those moments did not feel authentic.
The spice scenes in this book were also super awkward. Even the characters expressed awkwardness about it. Just super cringy.
I'd have to say I would skip this one if you are on teetering on reading it.
I think if you like an easy contemporary read you might like this book. Sophia/Summer (alter ego) is a little shallow and uses her looks to get what she wants. Danny is a grumpy but I'm wondering if he's just lonely. Her hard exterior might come from the fuckbois and hookups but a series of events they connect.
CN: body image conversations, gaslighting, cheating, divorce, drinking and excess of drinking, sexual assault, suicide ideation
DNF at 38%. I just couldn’t bring myself to continue it.
I was confused at the start about what kind of character Danny was. He was an asshole and then suddenly he wasn’t. Then he was an asshole again. The changes were too abrupt and felt unnatural.
I did like the authors writing style. I can totally see her as a well published romcom author in the future.
I read 20% - and couldn't handle the "f*uckboy" talk. This novel was not for me. I wanted to like this book because the cover was SO cute. but I couldn't get past the degrading aspect of men.
Thank you Netgalley and Sonia Palermo for the ARC. I loved how the author dug into mental health and the triggers from the beginning. Being the "party girl", Sophia had to grow as an individual and I loved that she did. It was a slower burn RomCom which I normally don't like but the other parts of the story that were addressed evened it out for me.
First I wanted to thank NetGalley for providing an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
While scrolling through NetGalley I saw the cover of this book, and it intrigued me. I read the synopsis and it seemed like a rom-com I'd like so I had to request it! Not to mention I kept seeing it on bookstagram and it had great reviews.
Overall I did enjoy this book, there are a few things that weren't my cup of tea but they are my hangups and nothing about how the book is written.
What I liked:
- Location, I think it was refreshing that the majority of this book wasn't based in a huge city like London but a smaller town by the sea.
- Trauma, there are a good amount of characters in this story who have suffered from some type of trauma and I liked how that was part of the story but it wasn't THE story
- Sophia's friends, she has an eclectic group of friends from Stefan & James, her roommates, to April, her best friend, and more they provide more depth to Sophia's character and always call her on her crap
- Spice, its a bit of a slow burn as Danny and Sophia take a while to connect but when it does you cannot deny their chemistry
This was a cute rom-com that is a bit of a slow burn but once I got into it I couldn't put it down. There are so many great things throughout the story and I kind of wished it would have lasted longer. If you want to tryout a book in a unique setting with some fun characters and personal growth I would suggest you pick this book up!
I have to admit, it took me a minute to get into the book. It was an easy and cute read once I got further into it. The cover and title is what really drew me in! Sophia is a spunky character trying to find herself and how she fits into the world. I found that part of her totally relatable to me.
I loved the banter and flirting between Sophia and Danny. They had their cute & spicy moments but I felt like some things were missing. There were parts where I wanted to know what Danny was thinking, in which I think this book would’ve benefited from.
There were also so many background characters, I had to go back to remind myself who was who.
Overall, this was a quick, solid, and sweet read for those who want to give it a go! I would love to see what else this author has in the future.
Thank you Sonia Palermo and NetGalley for the advance copy.
Wow! Just wow! Very strong debut! My emotions were on a ride.
*Spoilers* I love the trigger warnings in the beginning. Their banter was from the start amazing. I love their relationship with the friends and not so friends. I love their relationship and how vulnerable they were with each other. I felt worry for fmc when she’s realized her feelings for love interest and the conflict at the ending has me nervous because there was no going to back but the love interest groveled well and made up for it. I love the tarot reading as well. It’s was very hot and steamy. I will never listen to Arctic Monkeys without thinking of them.
