I enjoyed the previous two books in the series and felt that this one lived up to the hype. As with the previous books, this one also ends on a cliffhanger. I thought McGee was wise to focus on the other relationships in the books and let Bea step into her role as Queen. If you liked the previous books, you should like this one as well.
I feel like a blocked so much of book 1 and 2 out that I couldn't remember anything that led us to this story. And based of the ending, there is going to be a four book but I think I'm cutting my loses on this one.
So back and forth with all the relationships it is hard to keep track of who is dating who and there is no real emotional investment in the couple's because they don't last long.
I absolutely loved this newest book in the series. The characters felt like they got to finally come into their own and develop a little bit with more serious under tones to the story lines. While it's still YA this book felt like it was maturing along with its characters.
Beatrice has been my favorite to follow, I feel like i've grown up with her and now she's reaching her mid 20s and finding her stride. Her relationship with Teddy felt like it took a back seat in this story and it was interesting to see this new side of her, being out there more alone. The convocation of kings was so fun to read about, I loved all the new characters and the relationships Beatrice formed with them. She definitely FELT more alone and isolated and I wish she had leaned on him just a bit more but maybe we'll get that in the next book!
Samantha was so interesting to see in this book as I feel like she's always been in Beatrice's shadow. But now she's really stepping into her own. Pretty much her entire development this book was around Marshall and their duties and I loved getting to see them navigate that and choose where they want their lives to lead.
Now... I feel so badly for Jefferson. Nina and Daphne teamed up this book and became unlikely friends and he thinks it's great. But they obviously are up to something. This man cannot make up his mind between these two women and they aren't helping him out much. I continue to feel badly for Daphne and I wish she could just run away from it all. Deep down I think she hates it all as much as Nina does. I can't wait to see where this story goes in a fourth book!
Overall, the best installment in this series yet and a joy to read! I love these characters and all the new story lines were so great of an addition.
What if the US had a monarchy? American Royals III continues the story of Queen Beatrice ad it was thoroughly enjoyable!
Thank you Netglley for the eARC. I didn't know I needed this book until I had it and it answered so many unanswered questions for me leftover from the second book. But now, I need more and quickly. McGee does a great job wrapping up some loose ends while creating even more loose ones that beg for a fourth installment in this series. Excited to see what comes next.
I was dissapointed with American Royals II, but loved this latest book! The characters are relatable and lovable. I love to hate Daphne. Can't wait for the next one.
American Royals III: Rivals is a perfect beach read. I enjoyed it more than the second book in the series, and the ending definitely left me excited for a fourth installment. It's very soap-opera-y, but so were the first two. Once again, the chapters alternate between Beatrice, Samantha, Nina, and Daphne. Jeff, Teddy, and Marshall continue to be excellent side characters. One of the aspects I enjoyed most in Rivals was Beatrice's interactions with other royals, especially Louise. The relationship(s) between Daphne, Nina, and Jeff continue to be quite dramatic, and it's nice seeing Samantha mature and find happiness in her relationship with Marshall. If you enjoyed the first two books, you'll like this one as well.
This series has my whole heart. I think my love of Princess Diaries when I was younger plays a role in that.

I was nervous jumping into the 3rd novel because it had been a while since I read the first two books. Kathrine McGee does a great job recapping the past events while keeping the plot of this story moving along.

The story does end on yet another cliffhanger so I am banking on a 4th!
i love this series so much! this book did not disappoint. i love the character development we say, especially in daphne. it had been a few months since i had last read these stories but was able to easily jump back into the world and get lost in it!
Bring on American Royals IV! Its rare that a series captures my heart like American Royals has. Katharine McGee has written these characters so well that I am simply captivated by their story. Excellent!
I recently read the first two books in this series and was glad to receive an advanced review copy of this book from #NetGalley. If you are looking for a resolution to the story, you aren't going to get it here. This is another book that ends on a cliffhanger. That said, all of the primary characters from the first two books are back so if you like them, it is an opportunity to see some further character development. The new characters in this book are largely forgettable.
Rivals
The third book in the Royal Americans series does not disappoint. This book picks up where Majesty left off. Beatrice is now the Queen of America and the country will never be the same. Relationships develop and grow, unexpected alliances are made, and friendships are tested. Rivals ends with yet another cliffhanger which leaves me hopeful for a 4th book!!
I just love this series. It has a Gossip Girl vibe to it and just love the twist on history while still keeping with modern society. This was a great addition to the series our four girls are back at it Beatrice, Nina, Samantha, and Daphne. It was nice to see Beatrice come into her own more now that she is out from under the control of the old. The turmoil between Nina and Daphne continues. I want to hate Daphne but it’s so hard, but Jeff is too naive for his own good. Still over here rooting for Sam and Marshall.
Major cliff hanger….please tell me there is another one in the works!!
🌟I received this as a ARC from NetGalley for my honest review🌟
I’ll be honest, this is NOT what I was expecting. If you’re thinking this is the unexpected third book that’s going to give us the ending we all wanted from book 2, I have some news friends - this ain’t that.
I’m not totally sure how I feel about this one. I enjoyed it, especially Sam and Marshall’s story line, but the ending ramps up the drama and then we’re left high and dry! I’m not sure I like where Nina’s story is going - she’s such a lovely, good person and I don’t want to see that change. I liked seeing Beatrice start to really step into her role as Queen while also finding ways to have relationships outside her Royal duties. And I’m sad about the sudden turn Daphne took at the end.
Will I read the next one? Definitely. But am I happy with how this one ended? Definitely not.
I received this arc from NetGalley and the publisher. Though it felt a little slow in parts, I do enjoy the drama between the characters and can only assume there will be a fourth book. I’m curious to see where each of the storylines goes.
Such a fun follow up to an amazing series so far!! I loved the characters, the rewritten history, the royal politics, and the romance!
I think this is my favorite of the American Royals series yet! In this book the characters seemed to develop a little more, so I hope the series continues. These YA books are full of drama, but they also touch on bigger topics like gender roles and privilege.
AMERICAN ROYALS III: RIVALS
by Katharine McGee
Random House Children's, Random House Books for Young Readers
Pub Date: May 31
I soooooooo loved the first two books in the American Royals' series, and wondered how Book III would compare. Let me tell you, it's downright fabulous, sure to engage any Katharine McGee fan, and can be read as a standalone, so new readers can get a taste of what everyone has been raving about.
I adore the flawed but compelling characters and their complicated lives. Here, young Queen Beatrice represents America at a convo of global royalty. Will she hold her own and make the country proud?
Then Daphne and Nina continue their rivalry over Prince Jefferson, but this time they align against scheming Lady Gabriella. Will they best her and lay aside their conflicts to become friends?
And will Princess Sam get her heart broken once more or will she find true love this time?
Book III has all the feels and charm of its predecessors, plus the chance to follow characters you soon come to care about. Enjoy!
Thanks to the author, Random House Children's, Random House Books for Young Readers, and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine.

This series is absolutely delightful. When I heard this book was coming, I knew I had to read it. I was so excited about it, I even requested an ARC from @netgalley and they humored me. Thank you, Netgalley! Though my copy was free, my opinions are my own.
This book has everything we love about this series- fully realized characters, bold parties, the imagination of a world that could have been. I think that's what intrigues me so much about this series. Honestly, it could have happened! The author truly did her research and makes it nearly believable. This (surprise!) installment gives us all of that plus a ton of interesting, complex foreign monarchs to love. The characters in this series keep on giving and make this book in particular a really strong offering.
I know my students would absolutely gobble up this series, so I keep recommending it. The only thing that got me here was the fact that it was a very incomplete cliffhanger at the end and I hate when books leave you hanging. This one REALLY leaves you hanging.
Until next time, American Royals series!
I've come to the conclusion that these books are really good at going nowhere. You read 360+ pages, deal with ridiculous love triangles and other shenanigans, and, in the end, nothing really changes. It's honestly very frustrating. As a reader, you want your characters to grow and change. These characters seem to do the opposite, constantly. They keep getting more and more immature.
I loathe books where issues could quickly and effortlessly be resolved if someone just told the truth. This entire series is built upon the characters lying to one another or just not telling each other the truth. This series has so much potential and could be so interesting; instead, it's very quickly becoming a cheap rip off of The Selection.
