This is the second book in a trilogy based on a hidden sanctuary of settlers that have isolated themselves off from the world in a stony village called Laurent. They travelled from Eurpose to escape the religious persecution they suffered there and built a life for themselves where they could educate their children, live their lives, and practice their faith in God.
For a hundred years they remained hidden.... but when a scout for the American Civil War finds their secret home things begin to change. They learn that the French and English are no longer at war over the New World, and they learn of the formation of this thing called America. In the first book, the leader of their warriors, a woman, falls in love with the scout. When he returns home, a spy catches wind of his discovery and traces back his footsteps to also find the hidden sanctuary. Enter book two. Levi is also a man that also loves and trusts God, but he has a job to do and a war to help win.
Unfortunately, he is captured, and being a spy doesn't lend well to the villagers of Laurent trusting him. With his life at stake, the young healer Audrey panics and helps Levi escape. His flight goes very wrong, and Audrey and Levi find themselves thrust together in a battle for survival, trust, and forgiveness. I love the premise of the Brides of Laurent series... and I really love the strong female characters that grace their pages. I think Audrey may be my favourite. She is so sweet and caring, and yet brave. Love her.
If you haven't already, certainly pick up a copy of this book. I really enjoyed it and I'm sure you will too.
Misty Beller is a prolific writer. She writes wonderful stories of wilderness adventures. The story begins in 1815. In this story we encounter a somewhat mysterious cave-dwelling tribe that wishes to keep the unknown world out and sees strangers as a threat. Since I live in Colorado, I could picture in my mind what cave-dwelling might have looked like. In chapter one we meet Audrey, Evan, and Levi and can immediately feel the tension between these characters even before the details are clear. ( I recommend reading the first book in this series, A Warrior's Heart, first. I didn't do that and it made the characters and situation slightly harder to understand. ) I love historical fiction and always enjoy this author's stories.
My thanks to Bethany House Publishers for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The review here is my own.
This is a great second book that continues the Brides of Laurent series. This time we get Brielle's friend Audrey's story along with the man she meets Levi Master. At first, he seems to be a British spy and the community is wary of him. As she helps him escape from their mountain home, they face one calamity after another. Not only do they face a lot together as they hide in a cave, but they also begin a sweet romance too.
I'm a little behind on my reading at the moment so I'm also just starting book 3, A Daughter's Courage, which just released on November 1st.
If you like Christian historical fiction, you'll definitely want to check out this series by Misty Beller. I always enjoy her books!
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review. All opinions are my own.
Published 3 May 2022.
I truly enjoyed this book. It was very unusual. The setting was very unique.
The story flowed well. The principal characters were relatively well-developed. It is hard to describe this book without giving away the story. This is not a book with Christian characters and principles. It is not at all preachy but shows how to live your faith.
I give this a 3 out of 5 star review. I do recommend this book.
In a small hidden village in the Canadian Rockies, a friendship grows between the village healer and a captured scout, a possible enemy. After she helps him escape they are forced to camp out in a cave during a winter snow storm sets in. This author has a gift for description, of scenery, hardships and of a special relationships you can really picture in your mind. This is the second in a series and I really looking forward to the next book.
I was gifted a copy from the publisher through NetGalley, my review and opinion are voluntary.
This was a very interesting historical novel set in a somewhat "hidden" French colony in Rupert's Land, a British territory in what is now central Canada. The people live isolated, in a village that is primarily situated in dwellings built in caves. They are quite suspicious of outsiders. The village healer, Audrey, is quite immediately taken by Levi, a stranger who finds their village while on a spying mission. He is captured, and Audrey fears the villagers will condemn him out of fear. She impulsively aids an abortive escape and things go downhill from there. Honesty, impulsiveness, forgiveness and reparation are the main themes.
I enjoyed this very much, though it is the second book of the Brides of Laurent series and I did find myself wishing I had read book 1 first for more background. The village itself seemed somewhat implausible and I suspect it was better explained in the first book. Overall, it was very entertaining, and I hope to be able to backtrack and read book 1 soon.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
February 1815 Rocky Mountains, Rupert’s Land (Canada)
It's just after the Revolutionary War ended. Levi, a Brit, followed a former enemy back home, where he claimed there was a large deposit of a mineral that would win a war. Levi had to be sure how or if it might be used. When he's spotted outside the village, he's quickly taken captive, with his fate to be decided by these people. The people live within the mountain in a large cave that they carved apartments out inside. Interesting read with very believable characters. In depth story line of Audrey as a healer for Levi after a series of events. They spend a great deal of time together in another cave after Audrey helps Levi to escape, and he's injured. Good read.
I received this book free from the publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Misty M. Beller provides another sweet romance with her latest release A Healer's Promise.
Though A Healer’s Promise is the second in a series, and thought I haven’t yet read the first book, I was able to read this novel without any confusion. Beller does a great job orienting the reader with characters that would be familiar to someone who first read A Warrior’s Heart.
Audrey and Levi’s relationship goes through enough challenges that even though their relationship was short, it was believable that it developed so quickly. Beller does a great job showing each character’s strengths and weaknesses as they navigate tough situations.
As for the spiritual arc, both characters discuss their faith in God and trusting in His timing and not theirs. While Levi and Audrey do make mistakes, they own up to them, showing a maturity that will encourage readers in their own walks.
Overall, A Healer’s Promise is a sweet romance historical fiction lovers will enjoy.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to read Book 2 in the Brides of Laurent series. I enjoyed Misty M Beller's Hearts of Montana series, but A Warrior's Heart wasn't as smooth as I wanted. I think my issue is because of the whole hidden society angle. But I did like Audrey as a character in the first book, so ultimately I decided to check this book out. I was worried it would follow too similar of a pattern to book 1 and in some ways it did and in others it didn't.
Basically Levi worked as a spy for the Brittish army. The war is now over, but he overheard Evan telling his superiors about something he found that could win the Americans any war they fought against England. And so Levi felt it his duty to follow Evan. And thus he stumbles upon Laurent. Audrey sees him in the woods before he's captured, and of course, Levi is taken to the same storage room that Evan was kept in. Because of Levi and Evan's history as spies for opposite sides of the war, Evan doesn't trust Levi. Personally, I always appreciate stories that reflect how there are good people on both sides of a conflict, not just the moral right and moral wrong.
Audrey visits Levi shortly after his capture to bring him food the same way she did for Evan. In her brief encounter with him, she feels so strongly a call from God that this man isn't their enemy. That he is a good man. But not only does Evan have history with Levi personally, but Laurent has history with the British. And Audrey isn't sure the people of Laurent will be unbiased towards Levi due to his heritage. Because Audrey felt the message from God so clearly but others don't seem to be listening to her, she acts rashly and lets Levi escape. Of course, he's injured in the process and in need of a healer. Audrey can't stand for others to suffer when she can help and so she risks nearly everything in order to help Levi heal.
Audrey's story is easy to relate to if you've ever strongly felt God leading you. Yet like many of us often do, Audrey kind of took the reins out of God's hands once He revealed part of His path to her. It reminds me of Sarah in the Bible. When God told her she was going to have a son and first she laughed and then she basically gave her servant to her husband in order to bring God's promise to fruition. She took God's promise into her own hands the way Audrey tried to take Levi's salvation into her own hands.
Of course, I loved their relationship. Things weren't much more than a nice woman trying to help a nice, misunderstood, and innocent man. The progression was slow enough to be natural while fast enough to keep me intrigued. The romance was definitely my favorite part, and I'm glad I decided not to skip A Healer's Promise.
Favorite quote:
-I'm sorry if I ran ahead of you, Lord. But perhaps God's plan all along had been to use her to free Levi Masters. Why else would she have felt such a strong certainty that he was innocent.
I liked this quote because I've found myself wanting to follow God's leading in a particular area of my life but was unsure if He was leading me in X direction or Y. Sometimes we pray for His will to be revealed and He does give us direction. And sometimes we just have to do the best we can with the information we have at the time.
A Healer's Promise was better than I expected. I wasn't sure if I was going to pursue this series after A Warrior's Heart, but I'm glad that I did. Audrey has a story that no one else would be able to replicate yet many of us can relate to trying to work out the details for God. I look forward to reading the next in the series now. A Healer's Promise gets 4 Stars. Have you read A Healer's Promise? What did you think? Let me know!
This is the second book in the Brides of Laurent series. I have to say I liked this one more than I did the first book. Although it gave me claustrophobic vibes like the first one. You don’t have to read the first book to enjoy this one but it would help. This story is about Audrey the villages healer and Levi a British spy. He follows Evan to the village and gets captured. Audrey is one of the only ones who has faith that he is not a bad person. So she helps him escape. Adventure from the start of the book…you will love it!
I jumped into this without having read the first book, because I was so intrigued by the premise. While the story did start out quickly, presumably not long after the first book left off in the timeline, it ended up being fairly easy to follow along. I enjoyed the star-crossed lovers vibe in the relationship developing between the two main characters, and the tension and drama at every turn kept me on the edge of my seat. I appreciated the romance and the fascinating community the heroine lived in. Such a hardy people, living so far away from civilization to not even know the Revolutionary War had ended until someone delivered the news to them. It made for a very interesting way of life, and I now find myself wanting to read the first book so I can better understand the implications of such a life on the people. Perhaps then some of the decisions made that seemed out of place would have made more sense to me. I would recommend anyone reading this review to read the first book before this one, just to ensure you have all the backstory.
As the healer in her tiny community, Audrey Moreau is known for her kind nature and nurturing ways. It's no surprise to anyone that she develops a soft spot for their most recent visitor, a man who is bound in a call while the elders decide what to do with him. Levi Masters used to work as a British spy, and while he wants to go home, he also wants to make sure the Americans don't have information that could be used against his home country in future wars. Following an old adversary to his mountain home is a risk, but he's willing to do it for his country. When he's caught, his life literally hangs in the balance, but he finds comfort under the care of Audrey. Upon great thought and prayer, Audrey decides to help Levi escape, but in doing so puts herself at odds with her friends and family. When Levi is injured, she can't leave him alone, and they find themselves forced together during a brutal winter that makes their situation more difficult with each passing day. Soon she begins to question her decision...but also listen to what her heart and her faith are telling her.
I liked Audrey and Levi together, they were a charming couple and seemed to find a kindred spirit in each other. While not particularly complex characters, they are easy to relate to, and I found myself experiencing a lot of compassion for their situations. Clearly Levi had a troubled past, seeing a lot of terrible things during the war, and he questioned his own self-worth and past decisions he had made. Audrey had been sheltered most of her life, and in following her heart, she alienated people she loved dearly. She had a great conflict within her throughout the story, as she became closer to Levi and saw him as a wounded soul who cared about her more than her cared about himself. There is a heavy focus on religion throughout the book, so please be aware of that in case you are sensitive to that. There is some intimacy but nothing more than kissing and embracing, so if you're looking for steam, look elsewhere. This book is much more focused on forgiveness, seeing the good in others when they don't see it themselves, and finding kinship in those different from you. The romance helps guide all these messages, since Audrey is who convinces others to give Levi a chance.
As always, Misty M. Beller has created a world that intrigues me, and I look forward to going back and reading the first book to see where it all began.
In this second book of Brides Of Laurent, Beller has written a winner. We connect with the hidden civilization once again and the characters that so interested me if the first book. There are so many great characters in this series and we are just getting to know them better. Evan is coming back to marry Brielle Durand who he met in the first book when he was a captive. He has a stranger following him. Is he friend or foe? When Audrey Moreau, who is out scouting, sees Levi Masters, she wonders why he is sneaking to keep Evan in sight. I loved Audrey’s character as she is the healer for the clan and when Levi is captured she brings food to him and tends to him. She is convinced he means no harm to her people and helps him escape. These two will endure danger and heartaches and be tested to their limits but with faith and trust in God for help, they will survive. Then they must faced the clan again and what will be her fate as she helped him to escape and they were both guilty of causing the death of one of the clansmen. This is such an interesting book and you look forward to the next book in this series. i love Beller’s writing…..I received an early copy to read and review with my honest opinion. I loved this book and highly recommend it.
Excellent story! A Healer's Promise is a story about a group of people that live in a mountain in Canada, just after the revolutionary war in America. Levi follows another man and discovers this town of people hidden from the rest of the world. Audrey befriends him, although the rest of their community considers him a prisoner. She can tell he is a good man and worries what the rest of the community will do to him. When the opportunity presents itself, she helps him escape to outside of the mountain. He almost makes it to the cave, and she helps the rest of the way. The rest of the story is how they survive together for over two weeks, with trouble from the searchers and Levi gets seriously injured. Audrey is the healer from the community, and she does her best to help him heal. Of course as time goes on, they get closer and closer, until neither of them can imagine living life without the other. Awesome story I greatly enjoyed reading and will enjoy again and again!
I always enjoy books written by Misty M. Beller and this one was no exception. You definitely know you're up for an interesting ride. Both Levi and Audrey were definitely interesting characters to get to know. When Levi is taken prisoner at her village, he struggles to with his initial motives and all he has done during the war. His internal struggles shine through and we follow him on this journey as he tries to do right. Audrey on the other hand believes he's innocent despite his initial motives and she tries to help him escape.
We walk with them through this journey of suspense, trying to survive and the ensuing romance that follows. With themes of faith and hope, this is a wonderful story that shouldn't be missed.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author via the publisher. All opinions expressed are solely mine.
Can love find a way through impossible differences?
As I started into A Healer's Promise I wondered if it would be more like the first book in the Brides Of Laurent series or closer to the other Misty M. Beller books that I've read in the past. I was quite happy to discover that it continued the first book's differences such as a larger cast of characters and more time spent in a village setting, while not neglecting the author's familiar storytelling voice.
Of the hero and heroine, I liked Levi the best. He may have been on the wrong side of the Revolutionary War but he's still, to use an old fashioned phrase, a real man of honor. Audrey, however, simultaneously made me like her for her kindness, loyalty, and faith while annoying me no end with her naivete and her what seemed like emotion based decisions that frequently had consequences for more than just her.
A Healer's Promise was a good read. Misty Beller threw in some real surprises that kept me on my toes and interested in the drama and adventure on the printed page. She also left a little hint or two towards the next book in the Brides Of Laurent which has me intrigued and anticipating the next installment in the series.
If you are a fan of Misty M. Beller's other works you'll definitely want to check out her Brides Of Laurent series. A Healer's Promise is the second book so don't forget to read the first. They are both worth a few hours reading time...

It was fun to return to Laurent. That fictional place fascinates me! This hidden village takes care of and forgives their own! Audrey Moreau is a brave female protagonist but she doesn't always use wisdom especially when she helps a prisoner, Levi Masters, escape. They didn't get far before Levi was injured! Audrey is the village healer and manages to doctor Levi. I admired Levi for wanting to protect Audrey and being concerned about her reputation in the village. I recommend A Healer's Promise to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. I received an advance copy of A Healer's Promise from Bethany House and through NetGalley. This is my honest opinion.
I’m always up for an epic wilderness with this author’s stories! The first book in the series introduces us to the remote village Laurent that has been isolated from the rest of society. It’s fascinating to imagine what that could have been like, and how a community would progress separately for over a century with limited resources. In this book an outsider makes his way to the village, and the villagers’ fear over his potential threat makes Audrey’s natural compassion help him escape from the captivity they placed him in. The spiritual journey of Levi and Audrey adds depth to the crisis they find themselves in, and their attraction makes their situation even more complex. I was glued to the pages to find out how they would find a solution to their growing closeness.

Another Great Book in the Brides of Laurent Series
I actually was able to read this series back to back which made it extra enjoyable! I loved the first book and this 2nd book was just as good! I love the way Misty M. Beller draws you in to her books. She has a way of making you feel with the characters and immerse yourself in the story. Can’t wait for Book 3!
I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley on behalf of the Publisher and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.
A Healer's Promise by Misty M. Beller continues her Brides of Laurent series with an exciting tale of adventure, espionage, heartache, and family. I appreciated the setting of this book by Ms. Beller as it is very unique, the Canadian Rockies following the American Revolutionary War. Although this book is the second in Ms. Beller's series, it could easily be read as a stand alone. I have read some of Ms. Beller's works before and I continue to enjoy her ability to create an excellent story with adventure and plot twists while yet including very realistic and down-to-earth characters and relatable situations.
Audrey Moreau is her village's healer and has a very compassionate heart, always looking for the good in every person. When Audrey discovers a stranger approaching her hidden mountain village, she is intrigued rather than afraid. As Levi Masters comes to the village in the Canadian Rockies and is questioned by the village council, he cannot help but be completely honest with his intentions. Levi Masters was or maybe in his mind still is a British spy, even though the war is officially over. Audrey pushes for Levi to be released, but her fellow villagers do not hold the same opinion. Audrey, afraid that Levi will be imprisoned or even worse killed, helps Levi escape. During his escape, Levi becomes severely injured, leading Audrey to help him. Audrey is in a difficult situation, having betrayed the trust of her village and family for a stranger. However, Audrey's heart for healing cannot be stopped, but how can she break ties with her family and friends? Can she return to her village or will she be forced to flee? Can Audrey help save Levi? Will Audrey and Levi be able to explore the friendship and love that is developing between them? Can they survive the harsh winter that they are faced with? Read The Healer's Promise to find out for yourself!

A Healer's Promise

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC of this book. Bethany House Publishers have so many great books that our patrons enjoy! Beller is one of the authors that our people look for on the shelf, so I was excited to get the ARC of this one. This is Book #2 in the Brides of Laurent series.
Misty's addition to the series with one is a hit! It's a story of a little village in the Canadian Rockies in the 1800's. The people are good people, but Levi, finds himself in a compromised position as an enemy to these people, but a man with a great heart, nonetheless. And Audrey's heart tells her he is a good person and helps him escape from his captivity.
The characters are likable in every way. There is lots of adventure and danger and action. No dull moments to skim past quickly. It is a well-written romance and speaks to me of faith and trust. Great book. I am recommending it and have purchased it for our library. It is book 2 of a series but reads well as a stand-alone also.
