"Clearly, he spent far too much time at the hospital, being on a first-name basis with the majority of the staff."

Noah cannot help but watch out for others around him. It is what makes him a protector. But it is also what makes him have to be stitched up over and over again. He can't sit still long enough to heal.

Brooke feels like she and Noah have connected, but there always seems to be something holding him back. When she faces the big crisis of her life, will he be there for her? Or will she have to move forward alone?

This review could be filled with spoilers. Instead, I am choosing to be vague. Like the other books in this Coastal Guardian series, this title has two lines of investigation going on. There are also two romances that tie in with the suspense. Secrets are uncovered. Those investigators who are hardest to get to know are finally telling why they are holding back.

The suspense parts in this book definitely kept me guessing. While I figured out parts, there was more than what appeared at the surface. I was unsure as to how everything was going to resolve.

While the investigations may not overlap from book to book, the characters definitely do. I love how much they work together as a team. Those stories who have already been told continue to be a part of this book's plot as well. I did not know really know what all the Coast Guard helped with before this book, and I enjoyed learning more about these brave men and women.

I did get to read an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley, but I also preordered the paperback. Now I own the whole series. I wanted to review this title, and all opinions are my own.

This case reaches farther than they can imagine...

While probably not my favorite Coastal Guardians book, The Deadly Shallows was still a strong addition to the series. Dani Pettrey's trademark chilling edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense was as fast-paced as ever and her skill with the romantic suspense genre is never in doubt.

The Deadly Shallows was one of those stories that had so many twists and turns and different threads tentacaling outward that every time I thought the case might be coming to a close...it wasn't. How author Dani Pettrey kept it all straight in her head while writing the this third Coastal Guardians book I have no clue but she did a great job keeping guessing and glued to the page.

The unfortunate choice in stereotyping one particular political group made me a little uncomfortable, but, on the other hand the backgrounds and motivations of the villains were so well crafted into a layered multi-faceted mystery that I couldn't help but still like the story.

I've really been enjoying the Coastal Guardians series as it has stepped away from the usual FBI and U.S. Marshals etc. investigative realm and into that of the U.S. Coast Guard. It's been a fun switch as was the flight medic position of one of the main characters in The Deadly Shallows.

If you are looking for a good romantic suspense series from a very talented author you should definitely check out The Deadly Shallows and the rest of its Coastal Guardians predecessors. And, like me, I'm sure you will be eagerly anticipating the next book from Dani Pettrey...

Grabbed my attention from the first page, Pettrey returns with a long-awaited novel from this series. The author
excels at creating a intense story filled with realistic characters & storyline, faith elements, and clean romance.

Can't wait for the next book in this series! Hope the wait isn't as long.

I have four words for you:

Well.

Worth.

The.

Wait.

One of the things I love most about Dani Pettrey’s Coastal Guardians series is that, while each book does focus on a main couple, each book is also about the whole team. So you can always spend quality time with your favorite character(s) or pairing(s) even if they aren’t the focus of the specific book you’re reading. This helps readers become deeply invested in this team of CGIS agents as well as the CGIS-adjacent private investigators, journalists, and flight medics they love. Ergo, we have been squirming and fidgeting and and re-reading the first two books, trying very hard to be patient as we anticipated the release of The Deadly Shallows. And oh my goodness, this story was SO worth waiting for.

I have long been ‘team Noah-Brooke’. Having already invested in these characters from the previous two books, I loved getting a closer look at the layers that have made up their past and influenced their present. Whew – I’m still fanning over some of those kisses, but their romance is more than just some swoonilicious smoochy-time. As they each wrestle with their feelings for each other, Pettrey gives us a master class in multidimensional characters and seamlessly integrates a faith thread that touches the soul without being preachy or inauthentic.

The author also did a number on my heart rate with the dangerous situations Noah & Brooke kept getting into. A mass shooting on a Coast Guard base, a violent kidnapping, the theft of a weapon of mass destruction, illegal toxic waste dumping… and that’s just the first couple of days. Tensions rise along with the body count, and I stayed on the edge of my seat, frantically turning the pages and often unsure whether Noah and Brooke would both survive to find the happily-ever-after we’ve been waiting for. The suspense doesn’t ease up, even for the kissing scenes, keeping the mood of the story charged & dynamic.

Bottom Line: The Deadly Shallows by Dani Pettrey is everything I hoped it would be and more. Readers will love the don’t-blink, remember-to-breathe, high stakes suspense as our beloved Coastal Guardians race to save the day – and each other. Not only are we treated to a front row seat as Noah & Brooke finally – finally – admit their deep feelings for each other, but we also get to watch Caleb & Austin stop fighting their feelings too. Austin is one of my fave characters in the series, and her banter-bickering with Caleb is so fun. Add some kisses to the mix, and it’s even more entertaining. The faith thread fits organically with the plot and I appreciated that Noah & Brooke were mature and open with each other about their struggles. (If you’re waiting for Emmy & Logan’s romance, too, don’t despair when you hear this is the last book in the series. A novella is releasing next May that will tie up their story.)

The Deadly Shallows by Dani Pettrey – Suspense, Mystery, Relationships and Faith

As someone who enjoys suspense novels, I was excited read Dani Pettrey’s newest book, The Deadly Shallows, the third book in the Coastal Guardians series.

Brooke Kessler, is attending a Flight Medic A-School graduation to support her friend Molly. Like a story ripped out of today’s headline news, in the middle of the ceremony there’s unimaginable horror when someone begins shooting into the crowd. Brooke, Noah Rowley, and their fellow Coast Guard team members will begin the long process of investigating who is responsible for this tragedy and bring them to justice.

One of my favorite parts of The Deadly Shallows was the relationships between co-workers who had become trusted friends. Many of the characters returned from the first two novels in this series. The author captures the sense of friendships and commitment to one another. I appreciated that faith was part of the character’s lives, most notably through prayer. I liked that novel was clean, no profanity or immorality by the main characters.

There were a lot of twists and turns in this story, a couple of romances between characters and two mysteries going on. I like how Noah worked through the painful memories he had as a child that continued to impact his life. The story did drag a little bit. There was one romantic scene that could have been dialed down some.

Overall, I really liked The Deadly Shallows. I like mystery and suspense. But what I appreciated most was the relationships, with likable characters and their faith being part of the story.

If you like mystery and suspense, or stories based around the military, relationships and faith, you may want to read The Deadly Shallows by Dani Pettrey.

I would like to thank Bethany House Publishers and NetGalley for an opportunity the read a complimentary copy of The Deadly Shallows by Dani Pettrey. I was under no obligation to give a favorable review.

I love Pettrey's characters, and the cast in this one is no exception! From the start, I couldn't put this one down! So good, I absolutely had to know what happened, and stayed up late on multiple occasions reading this one!

Dani has created a rich story with characters readers have come to love, and two sets of heros and heroines who step to the forefront of the story. It's a intricately woven story with multiple layers happening simultaneously in a race to find homegrown terrorists before the body count rises even higher. Light romance. Spiritual elements. Great characters. An enjoyable read!

I don’t even know where to begin. This story was the perfect combination of suspense and romance. Dani Pettrey is one of my favorite authors and she knocked this one out of the park. The plot had me flipping the pages into the wee hours of the morning and I was sad to see it end but what an ending it was. Five stars and I will be recommended it to all my friends.

Thanks to the author for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts are my own.

The Deadly Shallows gripped my attention from the beginning and didn't let up until it was over! The characters are very interesting and well written and the story was captivating. I enjoyed have the multiple story lines going on and I didn't feel like they were confusing to follow or that they detracted from the story as a whole in any way. Fans of Christian Suspense will love this novel.

Dani Pettrey is an author who draws me in immediately and holds me captive until the very end. I have loved her Costal Guardians series and this group of friends that has stuck together and grown adding more who they know they can trust and rely on as they have each other's backs. I loved the multiple storylines that were connected and woven together in this book.

I just binged this series and could not wait for book three in the Coastal Guardians series; what perfect timing! I have enjoyed all the books, but I have especially been waiting for Noah and Brooke’s story (not to mention Caleb and Austin). Ok, truth be told, I love that all previous characters are mentioned and part of the continuing story. But back to Noah and Brooke. I think Pettrey achieves the perfect balance of romance, action, and military background/details. Her descriptions are accurate and clearly researched and her plots are intricate. I have not once easily guessed the bad guy, at least, not all the layers that are often presented. The inspiration her characters provide are a breath of fresh air. I love that they are not all die hard mechanical soldiers, but rather, have a heart, a life, and their faith. Brooke is a medic who is passionate about what she does and serves her community well. Noah is an excellent team leader who cares deeply about his team and does a really good job demonstrating servant leadership with his team. Together, Noah and Brooke have such a sweet romance. I enjoyed getting to know each of them a little more and their back stories. And the epilogue…oh my! What an absolutely perfect ending!! You must read to find out why for yourself, but trust me, it is worth it.

My goodness, this is one intense story! It starts off with a literal bang and the body count rises from there. It's an exciting and compelling story with two budding romances. I enjoyed this read-even though it's intense it's still really fun. I loved catching up with familiar faces from the earlier books in the series as well. Great read!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher and also purchased my own Audible copy. All thoughts are my own.

As a long time fan of this author I wanted to love this book but sadly I just couldn’t get into it and due to a rather hectic life and limited reading time I ended up deciding to DNF it.
The book started out with a bang but then there were just too many different things happening for me. Also there were several times where things just read a little cheesy to me.
I know most people won’t feel the same and this may be just the book for them!

This is book three in the Coastal Guardians series, however I feel it is a stand alone book. You will miss history of the Coastal Guardians team and friends plus some good reads. However you do not have to read them to understand the book.
This book is full of mystery, suspense, drama, friendship, romance and so much more. We learn more about Noah Rawley and Brooke Kesler, Caleb and Austin. This book is an action packed page turner.
I was given a copy of this book for my honest opinion.

CGIS Agent Noah Rowley has a secret—a secret he’s decided has condemned him to a life lived alone. But when an attack on his base is coupled with a threat to the one woman he truly loves will Noah dare to risk his heart? And can Coast Guard flight medic Brooke Kesler convince him that his love is enough?

Deadly Shallows is the third book in the Coastal Guardians series, but it reads well as a stand-alone novel. (It was so good, though, I had to go back and read the first two!) With wonderfully drawn characters and an action-packed plot, this thriller kept me turning the pages far into the night.

*I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I've been so anxious to read this book! I've enjoyed the first two books and this one was just as good as those. The action started at the very start and never let up throughout the book. Noah's team aren't just tasked with solving one mystery, but two. My favorite part of the book is the strong faith thread woven throughout the book. If you love a romantic suspense with non-stop action, you will love this book. I highly recommend it.

Thank you to Netgalley for the complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

4.5⭐This book starts off with action and does not stop! It’s one thing after another. When a deadly attack affects Coast Guard Investigative Services members, Agent Noah Rowley, and his team race to stop the attack and save as many lives as possible. During the attack, Brooke Kesler, a flight medic for the Coast Guard, helps take one of the gunmen that were wounded to the hospital and end up on the radar of the bad guys when they think she knows something she shouldn't. Fantastic read of faith, commitment to a cause, action-packed romantic suspense, twists, and character development. I like the relationships they were woven deeply into everything that happened and the peeling of the back of the layers as the villain and motive was revealed. While the story can stand alone, I would probably recommend reading the other 2 in the series -to get more of the character's back story.

Dani Pettrey has made a lasting impression in romantic suspense and The Deadly Shallows raises the bar. The suspense is ramped up from the very first chapter and never let’s go, taking the reader on the ride of their life.
The characters and relationships are written in a way that makes the reader a part of the family and invested in the outcome.
I love how the faith of the characters is seamlessly blended into the story making it authentic rather than preachy.
This is a wonderful book I wholly recommend.
I was given a copy courtesy of Baker Publishing Group through NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

This was the first book that I have read from this author and won't be the last. I have already bought the first two books in this series. Of course you should read books that are in a series in order but I was able to read this one just fine like a stand alone. The way this author actually combined two different mysteries into the same story was AMAZING! Then how everything came together at the end was brilliant. Again this will be the first of many of her books that I will be reading. She just became another favorite author of mine. I got this book free online just for leaving a review, and this review is my personal thoughts of the book.

It's been too long since I read a Dani Pettrey book, and I couldn't wait to dig in to this one!
I have to admit, it took me a bit of time to become reacquainted with "the team". But once I had who's who down pat, I was ready for it.
This is Brooke & Noah's story. And I love it. They are trying to figure out their relationship, but this is all happening in the midst of horrific events.
First, there is a mass shooting. Noah is injured, and Brooke watches a dear friend get shot and bleed out.
Then, if that isn't enough, Brooke is also kidnapped and.... well, I really don't want to give too much away here.
Suffice it to say that there is A LOT going on!
I found myself having to keep reading, as the action just kept on coming at me.
I highly recommend this book, especially for lovers of suspense novels, and of course, any other Dani Pettrey fans.
