Exciting romantic suspense. Lots of dead bodies. A couple of plot lines, along with a couple of romances keep the pace going quickly. Many nail-biting moments. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. I had not read any of the previous ones, but that did not detract from my enjoyment.
The story begins with events we’ve seen too often in real life, a mass shooting at a graduation ceremony for the Coast Guard. The journey to track down the shooter and solve a mystery is suspenseful, filled with twists and turns as the team follows their orders, even when in their gut they didn’t make sense, but they follow them anyway. There is a splash of romance between Noah and Brooke and Caleb and Austin, and I appreciated the natural faith message throughout this action-adventure novel.
I didn’t realize that this was book three in the series when I said I’d review this book. I do think I would have gotten more out of the story and gotten a sense of the characters and their relationships, if I had read the other two books. Overall, this was a satisfying read and one that would work well for your book club pick.

Please, Lord. Carry me - Brooke was sure she could not do this on her own!
A very determined killer with even more dedicated law enforcement creates an incredible story that will keep you breathless at times. The sheer number of deaths almost makes you wonder if those who stand for the right will even survive! Add several fascinating mysteries to the mix and you have a story that can only have been written by this fabulous author.
Toxic dumping, laser weapons, abductions and more - do they all link together? Is there one big kahuna that is pulling all the strings to these mysteries? The romance element allows the reader a breath or two during this edge of your seat thriller.
An early copy of Coastal Guardians Book 3 was received through Bethany House Publishers, Baker Publishing Group and NetGalley. These comments and impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.
Such an amazing read that I was honored to receive for honest review. Action, adventure and a great love story throughout the book. Medic Brooke and her friend Austin are at their friend, Megan's graduation from Medic school and a mass shooting occurs. CGIS Agent Noah Rowley finds out about the shooting and realizes the woman he loves (Brooke) is at the graduation. He finds out she is ok and than does all he can to figure out who would have caused this catastrophic event. Brooke and Austin are both traumatized by the mass shooting and the loss of so many lives and ultimately the loss of their friend Megan. As Agent Noah and Brooke set out to find out who is over such a tragedy more and more people are killed. Brooke's own life is on the line as she helped one of the wounded (bad guys) and the criminals are sure that she was told something that would give them away. Can they survive the evil plots and figure out who did it before more people are killed
Thank you to Dani Pettrey and Bethany House for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily. This book is tense and electric from the beginning pages of the book. It is a good thing that I can read fast because I was totally absorbed into this book to the point that I felt as if I lived there for the day! I could feel the ocean breezes! This book and this series are great books. They are suspenseful, thrilling and will have you flipping pages so past you will feel the wind. Once I start one of Dani's books, I know I will get nothing else done until I finish it!
The star characters in this book are CGIS Agent Noah Rawley and Coast Guard Medic Brooke Kesler. These two have been "dancing" on the edges of romance ever since the series started. When there is a mass shooting on the Coast Guard base during a graduation, Brooke ends up helping one of the wounded gunmen. Before he is placed in the ambulance, he whispers something in her ear. She really does not think too much about it. However, this has made her a target for the traitorous individuals who are causing death and destruction. Noah feels he has to protect Brooke and this will only bring them closer. There is another side story going on with Austin and Logan. So, the author keeps you on your toes trying to solve two mysteries at once. The characters in this series are so real to me after reading all three books. I feel as if I know them. This group of Coast Guard agents and experts are the real thing. They work as a team, and their faith makes them stronger as well. Noah is a true born protector. I always have a little chuckle when he is dealing with his sisters because they want so badly to "fix him" and help him out romantically. This book reads a like an episode of NCIS only it is on the Coast Guard side of things. It is about greed and revenge, and on the opposite side, learning to trust the ones around you without making assumptions. The characters are engaging and the story line is dynamic. If you enjoy a good, solid mystery with some thrills and romance, you will enjoy this book. You do not have to read the first two books in this series, but I highly recommend that you read them all!
Intense Christian romantic suspense story, filled with action.
I read this in one day because I couldn't put it down! It starts with a very harrowing and realistic mass shooting at a military graduation ceremony, and then doesn't let up until all of the various threads and pieces are put together to determine who did it. There are plenty of dead bodies throughout, but that is also balanced by a fair amount of romance.
I love how this author keeps the reader's interest by keeping the tension high and revealing information about the villain(s) bit by bit until the motive becomes clear. This is truly an intricately and cleverly plotted suspense novel. Unlike many romantic suspense tales, this one has equal amounts of both and is sure to keep fans of romance and suspense equally enthralled.
As this is Christian fiction, there is a significant amount of faith content. Characters pray often and their faith is a central focus for their lives and relationships.
You don't need to read the previous books in this series as it easily stands alone, but you might want to get to know the other characters who make cameo appearances in the story.
Wow! Dani has done it again! I have loved this series and the characters. This book is the best of the series. The action begins immediately with a mass shooting, and in true Dani Pettrey style, she pulls her readers in. This story is rich in both characters and plot.
Noah and Brooke carry the major romance focus, but I loved watching a relationship bud between Caleb and the beautiful and somewhat mysterious Austin as well.
This was a solid story, and I enjoyed tremendously. If you are looking for a Christian fiction title with suspense and romance, grab this book for your summer read!
Thank you Bethany House and Dani Pettrey for providing me with a complimentary Net Galley copy of the book. All opinions regarding the book are my own. I was not required to post a review, favorable or otherwise.
This book hit the ground running and never let up! This is book 3 in the Coastal Guardians series. The story itself can stand alone, but reading the other 2 books does give some additional insight on the CGIS team that the story focuses on. This book follows Noah, who heads up the team - and Brooke, who is a flight medic they work with closely. To a lesser extent, we also see the story of Caleb - one of Noah's team members and Austin, a PI that often works with the CGIS. Because the other 2 books include these characters, the romance factor is not as quick as it would if you read this as a stand-alone. Feelings have been simmering beneath the surface. As for the suspense, there are a lot of things happening at the same time that the team is working to solve. I wasn't sure there was going to be resolution on all of them by the end, but there was.
This book had a lot of things going for it. Lots of mystery and suspense, good character development, romance and a solid faith thread throughout. It also tied up the series nicely. My one complaint is that due to the fact that this book is Christian fiction, I had to suspend belief a little bit that every member of a military investigation team would be believers and prayer-ers, as well as they would all romantically hook up with each other and make it work. But, if you read as a means to escape and therefore don't have issue suspending those beliefs for the sake of a story, then this is one I can wholeheartedly recommend. Regardless, it was an enjoyable storyline with great characters. Special thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of this book. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.
Dani Pettrey is a fairly new to me author, but one that I'll definitely be on the look-out for to grab another of her books. In The Deadly Shallows she takes plot threads and characters and weaves them into excellent romantic suspense. There is breath-taking action and nail-biting suspense throughout the story. There are several clean romances going on as well. I loved the main characters. Ms. Pettrey makes them come to life. The team works well together, and it was enjoyable to see what each excelled in. There is also a very natural faith element that some of the characters live out.
I highly recommend The Deadly Shallows to clean romantic suspense readers and to readers of Christian romantic suspense.
I received a copy through NetGalley and am sharing my opinion of this well-written book.
Wow! What a wild ride Pettrey takes her readers on in The Deadly Shallows, book 3 in the Coastal Guardians series. This book centers on the mass shooting at a Coast Guard base. The event at the beginning of the book is a bit shocking, but Pettrey handles the subject matter in a sensitive manner. That being said, the bad guys are very, very bad and shadowy. It takes the whole team of investigators, plus some, to uncover the conspiracy behind the crime. I like that about Pettrey’s books — her ensemble cast of characters are always well-developed and integral to the plot. This book centers on Noah, the head of the CGIS unit and Brooke, a medic on the scene, but the reader is in for a treat. Caleb, another investigator with CGIS, and Austin, a private investigator, are also at at the center of another investigation. You get two crimes to solve and two sizzling romances in one novel! The suspense and danger are non-stop with lots of twists and turns and the chemistry between the main characters is perfect for lovers of romance. The faith journeys of the characters are naturally portrayed too. You really do get a riveting suspense novel with characters to love.
While this book is part of a series, I guess you could read it as a standalone, but I would not recommend that. Begin at the beginning if you haven’t already. I just hope the next book is coming soon. Fingers crossed!
Recommended.
Audience: adults.
My thoughts: this is one of my absolute favorite romantic suspense writers and not only because she writes about the Coast guard which I absolutely love but also because the stories are well layered and compelling and they keep me guessing and they hold my interest and they are just the best. I love to romance I love the drama I love the Coast guard I love the setting I love it all. If you are looking for a romantic suspense author give this offer a try you will not be disappointed. I was given a copy free and all opinions on my own
I'm enjoying the Coastal Guardians series much more than her previous series. Oddly, I think I liked the secondary love story more than the first--I liked their banter which may have been because the primary love story's main characters were always in jeopardy so their conversations/interactions had a different feel. This book definitely maintains Pettrey's trademark frequent action and peril which keeps the story moving along at a quick clip. Overall, an enjoyable addition to the series and since it was based in my hometown--all the more fun!
I received this book from the publisher and my honest review/opinions are my own.
I could not wait to read this book! Noah is the ultimate all around swoon-worthy hero. He is the leader of his team and they are known as the team who gets stuff done. Every member is amazing and they each have their own area of expertise. Together they are unstoppable, and I love their team dynamic. When their Coast Guard Base gets attacked they are first on scene and won’t let anything stop them from uncovering who is behind the attack. The web seems impossible to untangle, and for some reason Brooke seems to have attracted the enemies attention. Noah’s feelings for Brooke are complicated, but keeping her safe is his only option. She has gotten under his skin, and it doesn’t seem like he’ll get her out any time soon. I loved watching their chemistry and how much they needed each other. Pettrey kept me on the edge of my seat dying to see what would happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Romantic suspense. This book is going on my keeper shelf, and I already can’t wait to read it again. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers and was in no way forced to post a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
The first quarter of Deadly Shallows is filled with so much suspense and action that you’ll be on the edge of your seat the entire time. The characters barely have a chance to take a breath before something else unexpected happens. We actually have two different crimes in this story and you will be trying to figure out who did it, why, and are the crimes connected. We also get two well developed romances in this story!
I liked Noah and Brooke’s relationship and was desperately trying to figure out just what happened in his past that had him thinking Brooke would not want to make a life with him. He was very protective and caring of Brooke and went to great lengths to keep her safe. I also enjoyed Caleb and Austin’s romance. It was an unexpected bonus to the story and ended up being my favorite of the two. However, I felt like, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, that there was too much focus on the romances. It seemed like the crimes, especially the mass shooting, took a backseat to the developing romances.
I thought for sure this story would end up being a five star read. Sadly, when the middle of the book became more about relationships than solving the crimes it felt too unrealistic to me. It also felt a bit disjointed. I did really like that the characters prayed a lot and depended on God.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. The faith thread is medium.
'How many people were going to die before this ended?'
I've been a fan of Dani Pettrey's work since her first book years ago. They sit proudly on my shelves. This one is no exception to her action-packed suspense. The Coastal Guardians is a great series and I love it.
Join this amazing team as they try to stop a madman with a stolen weapon that could cause tremendous destruction if they don't catch him first. There is a mass shooting that devastates the team, but it's only the beginning of the havoc that falls in the wake of this diabolical maniac.
Pettrey deftly adds layers all along that serve to constantly bring more intrigue to the reader. The personal stories of those involved are great to watch as well. They struggle with real problems just like the rest of us, and they've allowed God into their lives and have His help with those problems. We also get a great secondary story as well as see old friends making an appearance. Very well done!
My thanks to Bethany House for a copy of this book. The opinion here is my own.
“CGIS.” One acronym, and Dani Pettrey drew me into The Deadly Shallows. I had never read any of her work; to be honest, I had not heard her name. I have read so many books with police officers, firemen, Army veterans, and SEALs. The Deadly Shallows instantly stood out, and I dove into its story with an open mind. While I had a few qualms with the novel, Pettrey secured herself a new fan, and I will be reading more of her books in the future. Probably the very near future, if I had to bet.
A former coworker was in the Coast Guard prior to joining my office. He shared a few stories and mentioned how he was interested in joining CGIS—the Coast Guard Investigative Service. He’s now with NCIS instead, but I learned a few things about CGIS from him. Not enough to critique Pettrey’s novel, but enough to feel a connection to the characters that made me smile. Noah Rowley and his team are dedicated and believable, refusing to stop until they solve the case. Fate throws Brooke Kesler into the situation, and a spark of attraction between Noah and Brooke ignites into a flame.
The Deadly Shallows by Dani Pettrey has everything you’d hope for in a romantic suspense novel. Tension, danger, a complex crime, and a love story that radiates throughout the tale without being overwhelming. It was there, but it did not distract Noah and Brooke from what was most important. The plot had twists and turns that made it hard to predict. Pettrey also pulled in the characters’ faiths, which I also appreciated. But only to a certain extent; it made the novel a little less believable.
Though I obviously cannot speak from experience with the Coast Guard, I can do so from my time with local and federal governments. Christianity lacked prevalence in any situation, though many employees followed Christ. No stopping for group prayers; we would all do it individually. Working for the government, you are expected to maintain professionalism at all times, as you never know who may step into the room. Unfortunate or not, public prayers do not qualify.
Many books, I complain about their short length. The Deadly Shallows by Dani Pettrey was a smidge too long for me. I did not know how long it was when I picked up the book, and I didn’t know how long it would take to finish. Yes, I have read lengthy novels and liked them. But The Deadly Shallows just kept going…and going…and going, and though I enjoyed the novel, I also wanted it to end. The characters kept having meetings and phone calls. Though maybe realistic, many of Pettrey could have skipped some of these to move the story along.
Regardless, The Deadly Shallows is a splendid novel. Though the third book of a series, I never felt lost by not the first two. Additionally, Pettrey’s writing style reminds me of Dee Henderson, who first drew me into the Christian romantic suspense genre seven years ago. If you like Henderson or Lynette Eason as much as I do, Dani Pettrey is right up your alley.
The Deadly Shallows starts off with a fierce intensity! There is so much action and suspense packed into the beginning pages of this book! The characters hardly get a moment to breathe before they are being targeted and it made the pages fly by. The reader is kept in the dark about Noah’s reasons for not wanting a relationship with Brooke, however I was always rooting for them! He was protective and caring in the big and small things. I appreciated Brooke’s strength and determination, which helped her in several intense situations.
This book had a secondary plot and a secondary romance which was a little surprising. I really liked Austin and Caleb’s chemistry and how well they worked together. The chemical dumping story line was a point of confusion for me because I just didn’t understand how it took precedence over a mass shooting. It bothered me that they were not all hands on deck for their original case and they divided their man power to investigate some chemical barrels. The last 30% of the book was a struggle for me. There was a lot going on, a lot that seemed confusing, even a dead body of someone I had no idea who they were when they were named. The characters were heavily focused on their romantic interests and I felt like at times it was detracting from the seriousness of what was going on around them.
The story’s conclusion was brimming with danger and the characters received answers and also closure. I do wish that this book had been a little more put together in the last chapters, but it has a strong beginning and rounds out the series well.
@authordanipettrey never ceases to amaze me with her stories! Here we have yet another suspense filled adventure to find who is behind a mass shooting on a Coast Guard Base.
I really loved that Pettrey featured the Coast Guard in this series. I feel like they don't get enough attention for the amazing work they do.
I'd already fallen in love with Brooke and Noah in the previous books so it was fun to get to know them better. I liked watching their relationship grow in the midst of the investigation.
It was also fun to watch Caleb and Austin grow closer. I'm always up for two love stories in one.
Pettrey always keeps me guessing in her suspense. I love how she strings you along and keeps you turning the pages.
I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley. This is my honest review.
The third in the Coastal Guardian series finds the team sorting through two mysteries. Action packed, suspenseful and intriguing! I loved that the series was set around the Coast Guard and their operations. At times, I did find dealing with so many characters a little confusing. A very well thought out plot that will keep readers on their toes. Recommended!
This is the third and final book in the Coastal Guardians Series, and although it can be read alone, they are all equally great! We are given some cameo's with past characters, and how this all fits together.
Yes, this is a page turner, and for me a very fast read, as I needed answers. It begins with a mass shooting, and we are looking for answers!
As with everyday life there is more than one story here, and you will quickly be holding your breath, and your heart will be in your throat, will these people you now care about survive, it is questionable!
Along with some great suspense we do have some really sweet romance, and when the final page was turned, I really wanted to stay and continue in their lives!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Bethany House and was not required to give a positive review.
