This is the 3rd book in the Ben Miller series set in Galway, and a very nice conclusion to the series so far. Recommended to anyone who likes a good read that keeps you entertained until the end.

This crime fiction is based in Galway and while it is a good read and the descriptions of local locations were easily identifiable. Being described as a hard-boiled Irish gangland thriller is a fair description. The level of gang violence seemed a little excessive for a city the size of Galway. Also Folan's connections seemed to be stretching it.

I requested the book on Netgalley because I had fond memories of Galway and thought it would be nice to read a book set in that city. The description sounded interesting enough but I was disappointed when I started reading the book. Just didn't really get into the story, didn't like the characters and found the things they did illogical.

I'm sure it's probably not due to the author or the story, but this just wasn't the book for me.

‘A rare summer’s day, with sunshine and no more than the threat of rain.’

Galway, Ireland, 2010. This is the third book in the Ben Miller series, and I find myself wondering how much longer will it take for Ben Miller to be free from his nemesis, the corrupt and easily dislikeable Superintendent Folan?

Alas, not far into this book and Superintendent Folan has called on taxi driver Ben Miller to help him again. A shot has been fired, killing Superintendent Folan’s driver. He wants Miller to track down the shooter, whom he identifies as his illegitimate son, Ritchie Moran. Ritchie Moran, it turns out, is the result of a liaison Folan had with the wife of Mossy Moran, who just happens to be Galway’s most notorious gangster. So, why is Ritchie Moran trying to shoot Folan?

It's a wee bit complicated: there’s a bit of a turf war underway between rival Traveller gangs, and Ritchie Moran himself proves to be quite elusive. Every time Miller thinks he has a lead on Moran, there’s a new twist. The main characters are Ben Miller and his friend, Gárda Aaron Dempsey, together with Mandy O’Grady (the late Siobhán’s sister).

There’s plenty of violence in this instalment of the Miller series, and while some of the bad guys get their just deserts, it does not end as well for Miller as I would like. Perhaps next time.

Note: My thanks to NetGalley and Sapere Books for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book for review purposes.

This is the 3rd book in the series, but the first I have read. It's very much an Irish-noir, with Miller a taxi driver and not a detective, but everything else is similar. There's the push of good vs evil, modern vs past, a hard boiled guy with a mushy center (that would be Miller). Jumping into the 3rd book in the series, you obviously miss a lot of history, but Sean gives you enough to keep up, yet make you want to go back and get the full story of what made Miller like he is. there is a LOT of imagery in the book- some of which is VERY graphic, so if you don't like those type of books, this may not be for you. There are lots of references to the Ireland of old (ie you can hear a collective held breath when the term 'irregular' is used), and they help to instill the noir feeling of miller being a man out of place and time. It's an interesting book, with subtle twists that change the story and keep the reader guessing!

This is a good read in the Ben Miller series set in Galway. An Irish gangland thriller, with good characterisation and an interesting plot. It's filled with family secrets and the ever growing feud between Miller and Superintendent Folan rolls on to a conclusion. I would recommend beginning with book one, A Deadly Calling, for background information but it can be read as a stand alone. A good, solid read. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

Find the killer by Sean Gibbons.
Ben Miller Crime Thrillers Book Three.
When somebody takes a shot at Superintendent Folan, killing his driver instead, the amoral cop reveals to his reluctant lackey Ben Miller that the shooter is his illegitimate son, Ritchie Moran, the result of a youthful liaison with the wife of Mossy Moran, Galway’s most notorious gangster. Folan tasks Miller with tracking Ritchie down and getting him out of the way before he, or anyone else, gets hurt. But Miller soon finds out that a young woman connected to Ritchie has already been killed. Things are complicated further when Miller and his friend, Gárda Aaron Dempsey, find themselves in the middle of a deadly feud between two rival Traveller clans. Can Miller and Dempsey catch the killer? Is Ritchie’s disappearance connected to the Traveller feud? And who will come out on top as the face-off between Miller and Folan escalates?
This was a good read with good characters. Likeable story. 3*.
