This story was a bit slow at first, but is you stay through the first few pages, it becomes a really good read. Izzy is on a Caribbean cruz with her brother, who is a toddler, and her parents. Even worse, she is restricted to ten minutes online per day. She really does not want to be there. In the hang-out area for teens, she meets Jade, who is traveling with her aunt and uncle, and Jade really does not want to be there either. The two become friends because there is no one else. The story is that every other year someone goes overboard from that ship, and sure enough, someone disappears. Izzy is convinced it is murder, but there is no one she can talk to about it so she sets out to prove it herself. Izzy and Jade do things most parents would not approve of but there is no explicit sex, and there are several unexpected twists and turns. I received this as an arc, and am free to give my own feelings about the book.
I received a free copy from NetGalley. Locked room mystery, when the room is a cruise ship. The teenage characters seem realistic and believable. Fast paced. Good summer read.
First up a big big thank you to the author/publisher/Netgalley for allowing me to read this one! Sadly, we just didn't click despite the amazing premise. I just love cruises (still hoping to go on one) and I love mystery/murders taking place there. Because there is nowhere to run!
Sadly... this one just didn't work for me. And that was mostly because of Jade and Izzy. I just wasn't a fan of these two characters. Jade for how she treated guys and how easily she went for drugs and alcohol and Izzy for well being Izzy. Haha, yeah, that sounds bad, but I don't know from the start something just didn't work for me with Izzy. She just has a certain attitude that didn't sit well with me and as the story continues she is an enormous sheep. Just following after Jade. Nodding along.
I tried reading up to 30% but I just was struggling. :(
This is one of the most addicting, well-plotted thrillers I’ve ever read. It’s unique in its presentation, the characters are likable, and I found myself genuinely surprised by the ending.
The whole premise of this book was amazing and I loved every nail biting moment of it. Girl Overboard is the perfect combination of friendship, secrets, finding the truth and getting justice. It shows just how far we'll go for the people we care about, and that the past can't stay buried forever.
I love these kinds of stories, the fast paced, heart racing, thrillers that keep you guessing until the very end. Sandra Block does a fabulous job of doing just that. She definitely kept me wondering "what the heck is going on?" and I couldn't put the book down.
All the characters, including side characters, are well flushed out and the story is super well written.
Overall, the book was fantastic. The pacing was brilliant, I was hooked throughout and I definitely loved it!
“I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
Random House Children's|Underlined,
Thank You for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
I will post my review to my platforms, blog, B&N and Waterstone closer to pub date.
Such a thrill! Loved the characters the plot and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! For sure will read more by this author!
If you're looking for a fast and easy read, Girl Overboard will probably hit the mark. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I wish it would have had a little more depth. The characters all felt a bit one-dimensional and there wasn't a lot to the plot.
I absolutely loved this fast-paced young adult book! My middle school girls will love the thriller aspect of this book. Not only is it suspenseful, but it also teaches young ladies about the powerful bond of friendship and being there for someone in their time of need. It does show kids to follow their gut instinct when they feel that something is not quite right. I can certainly see my avid readers gobbling up this book once it is placed in their hands!
This was a quick YA read, and perfect for summer!
I received an e-ARC of this book from the publisher.
Girl Overboard by Sandra Block is a solid YA novel. It had good characters, a good mystery, and an interesting ending and wrap-up. It wasn't until 40% into the book that the incident happened, and I felt some early chapters could have been cut to keep the action moving forward. The story was a slow burn, though there was good character development, which kept me reading. I rounded this up from a 3.5 to a 4.

This is a good YA thriller that is definitely better for younger readers than adults. I read plenty of YA but this one feels more YA than others. Fun but predictable, nothing groundbreaking.
This was a fast-paced, riveting YA thriller about a girl who tries to figure out what happened to her friend who goes missing on a cruise ship. Did she jump? Or was something far more sinister at hand? I liked the pacing of Girl Overboard and the character development was very nicely done. You definitely get in the head of a girl who has insecurities and you feel her anxiety and fear for her friend. And as far as the insta-bond Izzy and Jade make on the Cruise, it feels totally realistic, having also been subjected to "young teen groups" on cruise ships growing up--the friendships you make are super instant and sometimes feel totally intense, so kudos to Sandra Block for capturing that as well.
Izzy is a teen who meets Jade during her family's cruise to Bermuda. Jade is adventuresome, pretty, and popular, and meeting her means this cruise just turned fun and interesting. Until she disappears. Izzy starts to investigate Jade's disappearance and it starts to become evident someone doesn't want her digging into what happened. If she's not careful, she may be the next one to vanish.
This is the perfect book for middle schoolers just getting into suspense/True Crime/psychological thrillers. It reminded me of Ruth Ware's The Girl in Cabin 10, but for younger readers. For those interested in Young Adult, keep in mind this really should be marketed to Pre-teens/Teens. I read it through in one sitting and although it is fast-paced, I don't feel adult readers will enjoy the book.
Thank you NetGalley, and Sandra Block for the ARC.
I have been waiting for somebody to use a cruise ship for a thriller. It’s the perfect locked room mystery. I absolutely delved into this book and couldn’t wait to find out what was going on at the end. I absolutely love it.
Girl Overboard is a fast-paced thriller that I think teenagers will really enjoy! It is an entertaining read that should be in every young girl’s beach bag this summer!
Ohhh my younger self would’ve loved this book but my current self was slightly underwhelmed. I realize I’m not the target audience for this one, but I’m still glad I gave it a chance because there was a lot to like here and I can easily recommend it to younger readers. I think it would especially appeal to teenagers who want something a little darker and edgier but as a parent I would be ok with letting my own kids read it as it doesn’t go too dark or inappropriate. The setting was cool, I’ve never been on a cruise myself but the vacation vibes were great, at least until things took a dangerous turn. I thought Izzy was a great character too and can see her being relatable for the younger crowd, she was definitely a character I could root for. But for me, things were just too predictable and I knew how it would play out early on. Anyone newer to the genre may like this though, it was still a fun thriller that mostly entertained me I just wish it would’ve been a little more surprising.
Great summer read for younger readers. Some of the characters are not very likable, but the story flows well. Works nicely as an introduction to thrillers.
Izzy is a typical surly teenager. She really doesn't want to go on a cruise with her parents and her much younger brother but has no choice. She knows it will be boring, especially when she's told that she needs to severely limit her use of social media. How can she do that -- she has a new boyfriend at home and a best friend that she needs to talk to frequently. She decides that she'll go but definitely won't like it. When she goes to an area on the ship for young people, she meets Jade and they hit it off immediately. When Jade goes missing in the middle of the night, the authorities believe that she fell overboard. Izzy isn't convinced that's what happened so she starts an investigation on her own. Her investigation is full of twists and turns with some people doubting her need to investigate and other people who threaten to harm her.
This book was well written and easy to read but fell kind of flat for me. When I realized that it was YA suggested for 12 - 17 year olds, I understood why. This was not a great book for me but I think it will definitely appeal to a younger reader.
This was a fast-paced book with a good plot line. The fact that the setting was on a cruise ship made the tone of the novel isolated and ominous.
I loved how fast-paced it was. I think it will be a good read for some of my students. The premise and story were fun. I didn't love some of the characters and their quirks. Thanks Netgalley for the Advanced Reader Copy
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an electronic ARC of this book.
Izzy and her family are going on a luxury cruise to Bermuda! It’s her mother, father and toddler annoying brother Trey in one small room. Izzy is your typical sulky teenager and doesn't really have a lot of interest in going on vacation with her family and being cut off from her friends at home. Her mother tells her no cell phone usage due to the high cost of international rates. She is able to receive and send texts. It’s a family cruise shop catering to all ages. Trey spends time in a daycare center with the Guppies and Izzy at the Hangout with other teens. Here, Izzy meets a girl named Jade on the ship and the two become good friends. One day, Jade goes missing. Is foul play involved, suicide, or did she simply fall off and drown? Izzy makes it her mission to figure out what happened to Jade with pretty scary consequences. Someone doesn’t want Izzy looking for Jade.
This book is a pretty good YA thriller. It’s a quick read that started slowly and built up to an abrupt ending.
I think 7th graders and up would enjoy this book
