Izzy is stuck on a boring cruise with her parents until she makes a friend of a wild girl named jade. When jade goes missing, Izzy just wants to find her, but someone doesn’t want Izzy looking for jade.
This is classified as teen and YA, to me it reads really young. Something about the characters make them sound like freshmen in high school which means 7th, 8th & 9th graders will be interested in reading it. Slow start with an abrupt ending but, a nice introduction into the thriller genre.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me an eARC of this book.
Girl Overboard follows Izzy and her family as they take a cruise to Bermuda. Izzy is your typical sulky teenager and doesn't really have a lot of interest in going on vacation with her family and being cut off from her friends at home (she makes a very big deal about not being able to use her cell phone during the trip). Izzy meets a girl named Jade on the ship and the two become good friends. When Jade goes missing, Izzy makes it her mission to figure out what happened.
This book is a pretty typical YA thriller. I think it would be really good for someone just starting out with thrillers. We know from the beginning that Izzy did something "terrible" at school and there is a lot of build up around that, however the reveal isn't great. Izzy's dad's reaction to everything made me literally roll my eyes. I wasn't a huge fan of how some of the characters are written, specifically Sergei. I thought the plot was fairly predictable.
All of that being said, I read this book in 1 sitting. It was pretty fast paced and I had a pretty good time reading it. I think it was maybe on the younger side of YA for me, but I definitely think teenage me would have had a blast with this book.
This was a recommended book from NetGalley. The opinions are mine.
I enjoyed this book. Izzy and Jade meet on a cruise. Neither wants to be there.Izzy is quiet. Jade is adventurous. Izzy thinks Jade is making some bad choices in friends. Izzy is with her parents and young brother. Jade is with an aunt and uncle who aren't concerned about her. Two opposites.
Then Jade disappears. No one is concerned at first. Finally, Izzy gets through to a worker. The ship is searched. No Jade. Authorities are contacted. It appears Jade has taken her own life. But the message she sent is wrong.
Izzy keeps looking and making enemies. Some twists occur. Some stuff, I kind of saw coming. I liked this book because I could picture the ship in my head. Great descriptions.
Cruise ships have always freaked me out a bit because if you fell off, or were thrown off, they would never know until it was far too late to help you. This book did not help to dispel any of my fears about this as our main character Izzy is convinced that her friend Jade never would have committed suicide off the crew ship. What follows is a twisty Investigation conducted by Izzy as she is determined to prove that her friend did not commit suicide. I thoroughly enjoyed this book even when I thought I had things figured out I was not at all ready for the surprise ending.
Izzy are her family are on a Bermuda cruise. This was definitely not high on Izzy’s list of fun activities. She does manage to make a new friend with another teenage girl, Jade. One night Jade goes missing and is a presumed suicide. Izzy does not believe it. She decides to find out what really happened. Teen will enjoy this short thriller. It does start a little show and has a few instances of teen drug use.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read this book.
Riveting thriller about a girl whose friend disappears on their cruise ship vacation. Fun, beach or vacation getaway read. #NetGalley #GirlOverboard
Girl Overboard is an excellent book for anyone looking to enter YA thriller.
It follows Izzy, her family and a few side characters we meet along the way.
I loved all the characters in this book - I think they were all fleshed out differently and all stuck out.
I wish we could have gotten some closures with bryce and caleb, but since they were sub characters i understand why we didn’t.
jades story was so heartbreaking, and something I relate to a lot. I just wanted to wrap her in a hug and tell her it wasn’t her fault, and it was going to work out.
izzy and her family were so nice to read about. i loved her parents, and the ending with her mom really tugged on my heartstrings. i love good mother daughter relationships.
this book, like i said earlier would be better for someone entering YA or thriller books - it’s super easy to follow. the short chapters make for a super quick read as well.
over all, i think it was a really fun thriller to quickly read.
#GirlOverboard #NetGalley Thank you to the publisher and @NetGalley for the E-ARC copy of this book. The rating of this book is entirely of my own opinion.
Izzy isn't having the best time on a cruise to Bermuda with her family. All she wants to do is go home and solve drama she is having there. When she meets Jade, everything changes. Jade is daring and adventurous in ways that Izzy is not. After Jade disappears, Izzy is convinced it was foul play. No one believes her though. The more Izzy digs into what Jade was into, the more secrets she discovers. Suddenly, strange and bad things start to happen to her, and she begins to wonder if someone is now targeting her.
This was a very fast paced thriller that was fun to read. Though at times it was a little slow and predictable, it had enough twists to keep me glued to the book. Having the whole mystery contained on the cruise ship really built up the tension. I will definitely be recommending this to anyone who wants a beachy summer thriller.
A solid choice for teens who enjoy thrillers. The cruise setting is fantastic, the characters are interesting, and the pacing keeps up. Highly implausible end and some plot holes, but I don't think that will stop my students from enjoying it.
Decent read, might be a good “intro to thrillers” book for a younger YA audience. I struggled to get into the story, started out slow but really picked up in the end
Awesome thriller for teens. When sixteen year old Izzy and her family go on a cruise to Bermuda, she is reluctant to leave her boyfriend behind. Plus, what is she going to do all week? Luckily, she meets Jade through the teen hangout on.board ans they become fast friends. That is, until Jade goes missing. Those in charge want to believe that Jade jumped from the ship and want to wrap up the case. Izzy doesn't think Jade would do thar. A great story with lots of twists and turns.
