Stunning example of Epic Fantasy! I enjoyed the complex world building, characters, and political intrigue. I can’t wait to read the second installment of this series!
Garroway created a fried fantasy series, reminiscent of 1980’s fantasy novels, which is the ultimate compliment. The protagonist must leave his command in order to save the kingdom. Of course, this is a cliffhanger ending, and so we will all have to wait for a sequel. Age group: this felt young, like perhaps middle grades. However, to truly be middle grades, the language used will need to be modified to less adult-ish.
Sentinals Awaken was an interesting read, but a good one at that. 4.5 out of 5 stars!
We are flung into the world Helen Garraway has careful crafted and her care shows throughout the novel. Jerrol is a compelling character that spearheaded the story just in the way he should have, his other companions filling in the gaps when needed. What I loved most is that none of the characters are flat or one dimensional in nature. I wouldn't be surprised if I ran into them on the street, which is always a good sign.
The only reason for 4/5 stars is due to the pacing of the book. At the beginning, it was a bit slow. Worlding building certainly took a precedence which is understandable but sometimes hard to sit through. However, overall Sentinals Awaken is a solid first book that leaves you wanting the second as soon as the book closes.
Sentinals Awaken by Helen Garraway is the beginning of a new epic fantasy series and does world-building in this first volume. Unlike other fantasy novels that I have read recently, Helen Garraway can give you a cast of characters, Jerrol, and his companions, that are interesting enough that the book moves along nicely.
I'm glad to add a new fantasy series to my read list and look forward to the next book.

Beautiful adventure story. Like many epic fantasy stories, it takes a bit for the plot to build. Solid world-building, plot, stakes, and mystical elements. Well edited, too.
Perfect for readers who enjoy rogue soldiers who are still loyal to their king, chosen ones, and sweet romance.
