I’m still shookt! That was a pleasant read. Looking forward to more from this author.
Cheers to Netgalley for the copy
“We’re still coming to terms with everything and not really in a state to talk so much about it, but obviously wanted you to be the first to know”There is something so human about this quote. Not to go all psycho analytical on it but there is something so raw about the emotions in this story and the way that most of the time we need people for the support before we need them to actually solve our problems we have yet to come to terms with. I tend to be very careful with the thrillers that I read as they are not my favorite, but this was just GOOD. It was complex, it was hard to read at times, and it was just so thought provoking that sometimes it validated your emotions in a situation you aren't even actually apart of. Totally a unique read.
This book is so hard to talk about without the potential for spoiling anything, so I’m going to try to keep things as vague as possible.
THE GUEST HOUSE is an exciting psychological thriller focused on the lengths that people will go to save those that they love and the effects of trauma. That’s what you need to know. What comes next is a whirlwind of deception, tension, and anxiety. Morgan-Bentley chooses to unfold this story through dual narration from Jamie and Victoria that shifts between present day and what happened at the guest house. I loved getting both sides of the story and feeling the emotional reactions from both characters. Finally everything culminates into a layered and twisty ending that left me thrilled to have picked this book up. While I guessed a few things, I certainly didn’t see everything coming and even the bits I predicted didn’t stop me from enjoying the way they were revealed.
A huge thank you to Poisoned Pen Press for my gifted copy!
What a great book! I love everything by this author and this book was no different! I couldn't put this down and was up all night waiting to see how it ended!
The Guest House was a very unique story and because of it had me turning the pages for more and it was all credit to the authors ability to keep you intriqued, however, with that said the plot had several points that were too unrealistic or things didn't quite add up. Overall worth the read but be aware you'll be yelling that the moves the characters make at several points in the story :)
I loved this thriller! It was gripping, well-written and I didn’t expect anything of what happened. I read a lot of thrillers so it’s not easy to surprise me anymore, but “The guest house” definitely did. I will read sonething by Robin Morgan-Bentley again for sure
2.5 stars rounded down :(
Weeks away from their baby being due, Jamie and Victoria decided to head to a weekend holiday in a countryside guesthouse. When they wake up, the guesthouse is empty. Victoria is about to give birth. The once-friendly cottage owners don't seem as friendly anymore.
I really disliked the twist in this book, to the point where when it happened I almost wanted to put the book down. I thought the book was doing an okay enough job building suspense, even though portions were a bit boring, but the incredulity of the twist really brought everything down. I also felt like none of the characters were really fleshed out, and instead felt like caricatures and exaggerations of real people.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC!
I’m going to start this review with a quote from this book because this is exactly how I feel about this novel:
“We’re still coming to terms with everything and not really in a state to talk so much about it, but obviously wanted you to be the first to know”.
Victoria is pregnant in the guest house with her husband Jamie. They are getting some relaxing time before the baby comes in a few weeks. The guest house isn't what they think it is.
This is a good psychological book.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC and the publisher Poisoned Pen Press.
The Blackhouse was a creepy psychological thriller about a couple who takes a babymoon but get locked into their vacation house by the owners who disappear, just as the baby decides to come.
There are a lot a twists and turns and creepy vibes that will keep you reading late into the night.
Excellent edge of your seat thriller.
How far would you go to protect your family.
When Jamie and Victoria rent a guest house for the weekend before the birth of their son they have no idea what is about to happen. Awaking to a horror they never saw coming is just the beginning.
This book is excellent. Well written and keeps you turning the pages. It is another great book for me. A thriller like I've never read before.
Thank you #NetGalley, #RobinMorgan-Bentley, #PoisonedPenPress for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.
4/5 stars.
I was so excited to read this book after reading the summary but unfortunately it really missed the mark for me. I found the story to be too far fetched and none of the characters except for Jaime were remotely likeable. The story moved very slowly and didn't really get interesting until about the 60% mark.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was an amazing read! It was extremely atmospheric with the creepy winter vibes. Being a parent, this story was haunting… but, I couldn’t stop reading it.
I was thrilled to receive an advance copy of The Guest House by Robin Morgan-Bentley from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review and opinions. I absolutely loved this book! From page one it takes you on all kinds of twists and turns that will leave you turning the pages faster and faster to figure out what is going to happen. Do yourself a big favor and read this ASAP!
What a book! This psychological thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat, then pow, a corker of a twist.
With the birth of their first child immediately, Victoria and Jamie have last weekend away before the baby arrives. The found a small countryside guesthouse which is quite remote. Fiona and Barry give them a warm welcome, but in the morning Barry and Fiona are no where to be found, then Victoria goes into labour and they find the doors and windows are locked and Jamie’s car keys and their mobile phones are missing. Panic sets in. Jamie breaks a window and tries to seek help from a nearby property. On route he sees Barry driving back to the guesthouse but doesn’t stop for him. When Jamie finally arrives back, Victoria is screaming in labour, Fiona is in nursing scrubs and Barry has set up nursery furniture. Something is very disturbing about this guesthouse and the owners.
When the baby arrives Fiona and Barry make an absurd proposal and everything escalates out of control and Victoria and Jamie resort to desperate measures to escape and keep their baby safe.
A story full of detail and explain the characters backgrounds well. Plus the twist of the century. My only grip was the very British setting, but constant use of American terminology not used in England - diapers, trunk, cash register etc. But no reason for this to deter from the plot.
This book just didn't do it for me. It was one of those stories where the idea felt really good but it just didn't land correctly. Some of it just didn't feel believable - without giving away the twists I can only share so much - but even the premise felt like it had a few holes.
I've done the pregnancy thing and the idea of a woman who is only a few weeks from giving birth wanting to go and stay in a remove guesthouse blows my mind.
The characters were pretty blah. I couldn't connect to them at all. The lack of connection can make any thriller tough because I didn't care what happened to them.
Factor in an ending that was in no way believable. I honestly can't recommend this one.
I loved this one, so twisty and a very surprising ending which I didn’t expect. A great read. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Book full of suspense, good characters and great development by them trough the story. Thank you for this e-book.
Who is up for a creepy psychological thriller? I’m so glad I decided to read this in October. Victoria and Jamie are the main characters, due to have a baby in a few weeks… they decide to take a short vacation before the baby arrives. Everything is great until it’s not… the owners disappear, Jamie and Victoria are locked in the house with no way out and the baby is ready to make it’s appearance. What will they do? Who is the villain? This will keep you guessing, starts off strong and is a quick page turner. The ending was a bit off the wall which brings me down 1 ⭐️
I loved this book! I thought I had it all figured out, until the big twist happens, and everything I thought I knew unraveled. The Guest House is the best kind of suspenseful psychological thriller.
