As an empath I’ve been looking for a book like this for awhile. After reading this ARC, I bought the physical copy to carry around with me everywhere and I’ve been reaching for this book again and again over the last year. I like that it touches on multiple areas of life (relationships, emotions, self care, etc) and helps you understand why each one is important! There is no “set in stone” way of using this book and can journal away as you see fit!

I’ve recommended this book to everyone I know! 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Thank you to NetGalley and Sounds True for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion

“Affirmations help you reprogram outdated beliefs.”

This little book packs a lot of wisdom into its pages. It contains 52 affirmations to read over, repeat and journal about throughout the year (or however you choose to do it), and covers areas such as relationships, emotions, self care and more. The affirmations are mostly short and to the point, which makes them easier to remember and repeat. I also appreciate the fact that the three journaling prompts, while they are the same for each affirmation, are concise and help you get right to the heart of why each affirmation is important, how to put it into practice and how each one can positively affect your life and outlook. There is also not a strict structure - you can traditionally journal, you can draw your answers, put colours to feelings. You can do as much or as little as you would like in terms of creativity, and it really allows for a fun and unexpected experience. While not every affirmation may resonate, I feel that there is enough variety here that there are some in each section of the book for everyone. If you are a sensitive person, or even someone who deeply cares for others and sometimes needs a little bit of help taking care of yourself, I definitely recommend this book.

Thank you to Netgalley for the free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What a great, gentle angle on the affirmations realm. It's not easy to make a focus that has had so many incarnations fresh and inspiring, but Orloff has done it well here. A nice, easy book to keep on your bedside, or in your bag, to give you a pop of understanding or support when you need it. I liked the smooth flow of it, and it goes on my gift shopping list for these holidays. I know a lot of empaths who would love this one.

Book: “Affirmations for Empaths: A Year of Guided Journaling,” Judith Orloff, Sounds True, 2022

Book Review by Mary Mikawoz

I actually read this book in a very short period of time but that is because it is a journal that you need to work at. The author, Dr. Judith Orloff, is a medical doctor who is a board-certified psychiatrist. Her passion in life is to help empaths deal with issues, problems and concerns as they go through life being highly-sensitive and aware.

The affirmations are ways of being energy shifters from negative to positive or to reinforce positive ones you have started or already have in your foundational being.

I like what she writes about and it is evident that she has direct experience and understanding with and of dealing with empaths. The book was quick to read because I did not do any of the writing parts. It is meant to be done over a 52 week period during the entire year.

The questions are insightful and self-provocative in a good way. I reviewed only the digital book but apparently the actual book is 248 pages so it should have enough room to write answers to the questions but I can not guarantee this as I do not have a physical copy of the book. For this reason, I would recommend buying the actual physical book and writing in it on a regular basis to help reinforce good belief systems of self-caring and self-acceptance.

There are eight sections which you progress through from treasuring yourself to honouring intuitions. With each affirmation written out that you are to reinforce, there are a series of questions that you ask yourself about it and journal on that topic.

One of the most important points Dr. Judith Orloff makes in the book that stood out for me was, “I do what's possible to make a goal happen, then surrender the results to Spirit to work its magic in my life.”

I found the journal to be a very good self-awareness and transformational process that you can do at your own pace. I give the book a 4.5 out of 5.0.

Dr. Judith Orloff also has her website under her name with much more information. She is also the author of several books written in the same vein.

A wonderful little feel-good book, I would love to have a small copy in my bag at all times, just for that little pick-me-up that this book gave me.

The book is filled with 52 affirmations, meant to be read weekly, followed by three journaling prompts for each question. If you buy the actual book copy you will be able to journal your feelings and reflections directly into the book. I had the ebook but the questions are still listed for each affirmation and would be easy to transfer to one's own journaling notebook. Several of the affirmations really resonated with me and I will be returning to them regularly. I found an underlying them of surrender in these affirmations that I sincerely appreciated.

This guided journaling devotional is a great tool for sensitive souls and helping to work with these gifts for themselves and how they relate to others. I think it would be very helpful empaths and look forward to working through the book over the coming year.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sounds True for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. The very first oracle card deck I purchased was written by Judith Orloff. It is a trusted source of wisdom for me. So when I saw this new book she had written I knew I had to read it. Thoughts:

This isn't a storybook but a guided journal with affirmations. I enjoyed reading these affirmations and wrote some of them onto my phone and journal.

One con of this guided journal was the association to the term "empaths" because I personally felt it could be unrelatable. An empath can be understood as "having the ability to understand the experiences and feelings of others outside of your own" but what if the individual picking up this book doesn't have the ability to do so, will this journal not cater to them then? I felt that it was very streamlined towards a particular audience.

Another con was the journal questions, it was repeated throughout the book. There are 8 different parts to this journal but the questions didn't change accordingly which defeats the purpose of the journal.

As an empath, I'm glad this book can add to the affirmations that I say daily.

This is an awesome book that gives empaths, not only affirmations, but journaling prompts to really dig deep. I enjoyed the book.

Thank you Dr Orloff and NetGalley for an ARC of this book.

Dr Orloff commences the book with an explanation of what an affirmation is and they are best used. In this book she advises working on one affirmation a week, moving through the book, in any order, through the course of a year.

Dr Orloff gently reminds that we can use an affirmation before it is truly a belief we hold to be true, that by saying it regularly each day, we can manifest that belief,

Each affirmation has the same three journal prompts to encourage deeper thinking / reflection.
This book is for empathy, however I think the affirmations have a place for anyone with an interest in developing this practice in their life.

I'm a counselor and teacher and am an empath. It's a blessed and a curse. I love this book. I love love it. So, anyone that is an empath, should read this. I highly recommend this!

I really liked this book, against all odds (ie: I do not find the term “empaths” useful). This book doesn’t even really define what it means by ‘empaths’, and often what they mean is something more like “autistic” or even just “sensitive to stimuli” (see the Highly Sensitive Person diagnosis, which in my unprofessional opinion is just autism or even PTSD). This book is set up as a journal, so it introduces an affirmation and then it has several pages for journaling with small prompts. I find this really helpful because the number 1 problem I have with “try telling yourself an affirmation” is that I feel like all affirmations either feel fake or I can’t come up with my own. I also liked that a lot of these affirmations can count as goals for a week, such as “I tune in to my energy level throughout the day. I know how I am feeling and respect my body’s needs”. This affirmation feels Particularly Autistic to me: "I empower myself as an empath every time I decrease stimulation in the face of sensory overload.” Some of these feel a little, uhh, weird to me, such as “My natural empathy makes my body, mind, and spirit, strong and resilient.”, especially because I think you could replace “natural empathy” with literally anything else, but also if you picked up this book you know what I signed up for. I personally will be replacing it with ‘my autism’ or ‘my self’. Four stars.

Empaths typically take on the feelings and emotions of others. This task can be quite exhausting and overwhelming. Therefore, it is important for an empath to put him/herself first and think about his/her needs, feelings, and healthy habits. Judith Orloff, has provided an amazing tool for an empath to use on a daily basis. Affirmations can be powerful for everyone. Affirmations for empaths provides 52 weekly affirmations, as well, as space for journaling. The following topics are explored: treasuring yourself, nurturing vitality, creating wellness, balancing emotions, building healthy relationships, discovering purpose and work, honoring intuition, and finding sanctuary. I highly recommend this book. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance review copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

As a true empath, this book was much needed. Often times, empaths find themselves losing themselves caring for others and this helped me realize that I must also care for myself while being empathetic towards others. Orloff's format helps readers take what they read and implement it through journaling. A remarkable book to help empaths truly focus on self-care.

This book from Judith Orloff is an excellent guide for empaths and makes a wonderful extension of her earlier works. I would describe this book as a happy and healthy way of conducting inner-work and building emotional strength and resilience day-to-day for empaths. I highly recommend this book.

Thought-provoking aphorisms with space for journaling about each one - very useful. However, I do wish Orloff would've included a blurb with each one just explaining a bit about why she included it and what it meant in the context of being an empath or hyper-sensitive person, to help kickstart the thought process or provide some perspective.
