The lack of communication between them .is infuriating. Some parts were good but as a whole I didn't really enjoy it. I don't know if I will give Jana Macgregor another chance. Not for me, it was one big miscommunication trope and I just didn't enjoy parts of it. I liked the relationship between the three widows but the MCs relationship was very annoying.
Ten Rules for Marrying a Duke by Michelle McLean is a standalone historical romance novel and my first read by this author. I knew I was in for a good time when I found myself laughing out loud during the first chapter. The characters were fresh and funny, making this story a refreshing take on the genre.
The female lead, Arabella, while naive in her own way, was not like the virgin heroines of yore. She had more spunk and wit, something expected from books written today. The book included some of my favorite tropes: the marriage of convenience, and the reformed rake.
The reformed rake is a Duke named Silas who has a complicated relationship with his grandfather. It puts a strain on his personal choices. However, the scheme that Arabella proposes gives him a win-win scenario where he can get what he wants and still get his grandfather off his back. She gets to provide her family with an escape from the brush with scandal.
I appreciated the balance of an alpha male with a modern appreciation for a headstrong female character. I laughed, I cried, and I was very invested in the overall evolution of the relationship between Arabella and Silas.
The whole book was super cute and I couldn't put it down. As soon as I finished it, I started it all over again. Then I picked it up and read it again a few weeks later. Highly recommend. 5 stars.
I recieved a free copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book.
After Arabella's sister runs away with their family's groom, she decides she must marry in order for the scandel to not hurt her sister's chance at a good marriage.
Arabella seeks out Silas. A frivolous duke who needs an heir but does not want a wife.
They agree to marry with Silas promising to find the sister a good husband and in return Arabella will provide their heir.
The budding romance between Arabella and Silas was sweet but the ending was on of my most hated. All they needed was to have an honest conversation. The bedroom scenes were also weak.
Would read this author in the future.
Regency Historical romance whereas middle sister to the rescue and taking one for the team. Arabella is bookish and has no interest to marry but her sister elopes with a servant. This results in Arabella coming conclusion to marry so her younger sister has a chance in society. So, she proposes a plan with rakish Duke Silas – marriage and heir then she will go on her merry way to the country. This leaves him to tomcat around without expectations from family responsibilities, his liaisons or title seeking debutantes. Simple never goes right. Opposites attract and they can’t help themselves and best laid plan go array. This story was very lighthearted. I would have liked more fire between the H &H. But they did have a good banner. I look forward to reading and following this author.

This is a fun and witty historical romance following the perspectives of Arabella, who is trying to restore her family's name after her older sister runs off and marries a man of lesser social standing. In order to do that and make sure her younger sister marries well; she has come up with a plan which includes the Duke of Whittsley. Silas has no interest in setting down or starting a family but when a young woman falls at his feet and claiming she has a solution to both their problems, how can he say no.
I had a really good time with this romance, and it had a marriage of convenience trope, which is one of my favorites in a book. I loved how the relationship and how the dynamics changed between the main characters, it was entertaining. The banter and the witty back and forth was so fun I just ate it up. The spicy scenes were good, and I loved how they could not keep their hands off of each other. I loved both characters, especially Arabella, she was trying to do what was best for her family and all she wanted to do was read all the books she could get her hands on, a girl after my own heart. Overall, I highly recommend this book, it was great!
I received this advanced ebook, via Netgalley. This review is my own honest opinion.
I love a good marriage of convenience and this one doesn't disappoint. In my opinion, there need to be far more marriages of convenience romances. It was the most dominant form of marriage for the time period.
I loved the witty, flirtatious banter between Arabella and Silas. I loved the ten rules they devised to try and control their marriage but failed miserably at taking feelings into account.
This is an easy entertaining read that I highly recommend
I received an arc of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed this story of an arranged marriage. Silas and Arabella were characters you could immediately fall in love with. I loved the humor in this book and my favorite part was when Silas realized that she was more in love with his library than with him
I found this marriage of convenience story to be utterly enchanting! Both hero and heroine were full of witty banter and chemistry. I am definitely going to have to add this author to my auto read list!
Thank you netgalley, Entangled Publishing, and the author for my advance copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Michelle McLean never disappoints. This is one of those books that you spend a Sunday with a cup of tea reading and just relax and enjoy a quiet evening. I loved the characters and their relationship and even though it falls into the miscommunication trope I didn’t mind it too much. I do love the arranged marriage trope and really liked the chemistry of the main characters!
This was an entertaining historical rom-com. I thought the beginning a bit abrupt as we are instantly thrown into the negotiating scene. While this is indeed fiction, Silas’ acquiesence to the marriage arrangement seemed too far fetched. I enjoyed their developing relationship that incorporated quite a bit of steam. There was the predictable misunderstanding of feelings with the inevitable make up scene but it was still a fun read.
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I had been reading a lot of paranormal and wanted to get back to the historical. I really enjoyed the story. It was a fun read and quite enjoyable. I liked the story and characters a great deal.
March was a not so great reading month for me, but this book brought me out of a horrible reading slump and I can honestly say I will be reading all future and past books by Michelle McLean.
Arabella needs to help her family's reputation by securing a good marriage and she knows just the duke. Silas needs an heir to get his grandfather off his back. Together they create a plan to get them both what they want and nothing can go wrong, right?
Oh the banter in this book! I fell in love with both of these characters immediately and by the end of the book I didn't want to say goodbye to them. If you love hilarious banter, strong female characters and historical romance I highly recommend this book!
I loved this book so much! What a treat it was. I am pleased I was given the opportunity to pick it up. A classic fake relationship trope, but done in such a funny and lighthearted way. It's the kind of book you want to curl up with to fight away the blues. Warm and bubbly, with just the right amount of spice.
I guess the one thing I would have liked more was further character development for Silas. I often wondered things about his character, which was excellent in keeping me hooked, but I wish we'd gotten just a little more of an insight about who he was.
I'm excited to read more by Michelle McLean and see her becoming a favourite with how she writes.
The publisher kindly provided ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I loved this book! I adored Arabella’s complete dedication to her family. Silas is a disrespectful libertine, but he is lovable! Beneath the playboy exterior, there is a sensitive, caring individual. Silas and Arabella’s connection is instantaneously passionate. The couple’s romance was fiery and intense, yet there were cute funny moments….. recommend this book!
Ten Rules for Marrying a Duke by Michelle McLean is the story of Silas Spencer, The Duke of Whittsley and Arabella Bromley. Silas is filling the pressure to produce the heir for his family title which has lead him to strike a deal with Arabella. Arabella is out to restore her family's reputation and help her sister Anne. This has lead her to realize she has to marry someone of importance...a Duke. The deal between Arabella and Silas is for connivance and not love but it doesn't take long for each to start breaking it bring them to start having issues. Enjoyed their story.
4.5 Star
marriage of convenience. Arabella needs to improve the status of her family after her sister married far below her station. Silas needs an Heir and to live his life unbothered by a wife, Arabella presented an interesting solution. 10 Rules later and we get a story that is fun with great banter, tender and kind but also full of questions, distrust, and of course some tension
I really enjoyed this book! I fell in love with Silas and Arabella from the start! The drawing room banter/negotiations were hilarious!
This story was absolutely darling!
Any bookish gal readers out there will easily see themselves in the smart shoes of this lovable leading lady as she strives to straighten out the mess her elder sister left behind in order for her younger sister to have a chance at a better future. It matters not what position it puts her in because she is selfless like that, although she doesn't truthfully view herself as such. She simply believes she is doing what any caring sibling would do for the others without regard for herself. The thing is, it's often when we're NOT looking for something that it sneaks right up on us, and while she nor he wishes to be wed for traditional reasons, her ill-stated-but-smart plan fits them both rather perfectly. The rule making session was to die for as they exchange witty banter, and wild ideas providing a few blush worthy moments, and lots of promising encounters to come...though I don't mean that exactly the way it sounds. *ahem*
One of my favorite scenes revolves around the Duke's realization that she simply wants him...for his library! (*uncontrollable laughter*) Seriously though, her end game DOES in fact include access to a personal library, but it doesn't make the scene any less amusing or warmth inducing. If you're anything like me, you'll fall for both characters straight from the start. You'll wish with all your heart that they would simply TALK to one another at times instead of assuming they know how the other is feeling, or broaching the subject of rule bending, nay BREAKING. For goodness sake, the miles that could have been saved by a few simple words and a dose of courage...but I digress. That particular failure to present their true heart lead to another rather touching moment involving books, a note, and a rather specific piece of artwork. *sigh*
All in all, a wonderful read that Historical Romance fans won't be able to keep their hands off of!
Here are 5 reasons I thought @michellemcleanbooks made me fall in a bit more in love with historical romances🥰
•The hilarity/humor her characters invoked
•The interesting and attractive storyline
•The 10 Rules
•The marriage of convenience
•The.. romance
Overall this story made me smile, sigh, and stay up late wanting to know what would happen next. Truly an author I will look forward to reading from again in the future!
4 stars!
Ten Rules is a marriage of convenience romance that turns into so much more. Arabella and Silas agree to marry so that Arabella can provide him and heir and so that he can provide her family the connections they need after a scandal. The pari make a list of rules they’ll live by so they don’t fall in love, which of course the proceed to break as they fall in love.
I liked both Arabella and Silas and their very distinct family members. Their romance was a fluffy delight that was easy to follow and low angst. I really enjoy the forced proximity of marriage of convenience romances and this one was no exception. I was expecting the book to have a bit more heat. The scenes were there, but they felt rushed and glossed over which felt odd for a historical romance. This was my first book by Michelle McLean so this might just be how she writes. It didn’t turn me off from her books, but was a surprise. I will happily read more books from Michelle.
