The Housekeeper by Joy Fielding should be on the radar of those who love a good mystery, thriller, and all-around good read. It is the story of a young woman's fight to keep her antagonistic and often hateful father and her ill mother safe. In doing so she hires a housekeeper. The housekeeper is warm and friendly. She is personable, a great cook, and provides excellent personal assistance to the couple. Until she doesn't. In a series of twists and turns a story of adultery, sibling rivalry, death, and family emerges that will keep the interest of the reader until the very last page. The characters in this story are rich, the plot engaging, and the setting fun and interesting. The book is a bit of a slow starter but once the action begins it is a never-ending thriller with surprising twists and turns until the very end. This one is one of Joy Fielding's best. Great book. thanks to #NetGalley#TheHousekeeper for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Name of Book: The Housekeeper
Author: Joy Fielding
Publisher: Random House Publishing Group ~ Ballantine
Genre: Domestic Suspense
Pub Date: August 16, 2022
My Rating: 4 Stars

This is my second Joy Fielding novel. I read and enjoyed "Cul-de -sac" and have been looking forward to another Fielding story.

In this story Jodi Bishop hires Elyse Woodley as a live-in care giver/housekeeper to help with her aging parents.
Jodi’s mother, Audrey has Parkinson’s.
Her father Vic is devoted to caring for his wife.
Jodi is a successful real estate agent with two young children Sam who is eight years old and Daphne is three years old needless to say she is very busy so is happy to have a live in care taker help with her parents.
Jodi’s husband Harrison is a writer but not all that successful and is jealous of his wife’s success.

Jodi is super pleased with Elyse, who is in her early sixties and is very energetic. Vic is not happy with someone taking care of his wife but soon adjusts to Elyse’s personality as well as her help.

Hmm Jodi notices that her mother’s condition has worsens and Elyse is wearing some of her jewelry.

There is no doubt there are characters in this that you just want to slap! Tracy and few others were on the top of my list!
But I kept pulling for Jodi and was hopeful that she would ‘fix’ this situation as well as ‘fix’ herself!

There is a twist that had me gasp out loud and then I nearly threw my e Reader across the room!
Although the plot was somewhat predictable, it kept me reading. It was good in a strange way as I ended up sad about the whole situation.
Always enjoy reading the author's Acknowledgements. Looking forward to the next Fielding read!

If it seems too good to be true~ it most likely isn’t!

This was a great thriller. Short chapters, first person, with lots of twists and turns that made it move along at a fast pace which I liked. The main character Jodi is a smart, sensible and over-worked mom of two. Her husband is an author who spends most of his time in his office "writing", working on his second novel after a huge success with number one. Jodi's mom has end-stage Parkinson's and lives with her Dad who is getting too old to care for her. Jodi hires a housekeeper, Elyse, to keep house and take care of the mom, and she is just too good to be true. Elyse does a fabulous job with the mom and the house, watching out for the dad and even the children, while baking up a storm. Jodi's sister (who is completely useless in helping out with anything) loves her as well. Slowly little things that are odd or seem wrong start happening, all involving Elyse and the dad. Eventually things come to a head and well, I won't spoil it for readers. The story is well-written and once I got close to the end I had to finish to see what happened. Definitely a great story! I took one star off because I basically figured out almost everything that happened before it actually happened.

This book was so incredibly well written, it caught my attention from the very beginning and didn't let go until the final page.

This is not your typical suspense where you are up in the air about what is going on and who is doing it. There are little hints along the way with comments that point out little things the housekeeper did that should have been paid attention to. The author has a natural ability to tell a good story by escalating things as the book goes along. And honestly, that's the way something like this would pan out in real life.

The characters are so realistic right down to the often self-centered, somewhat ditzy and yet a bit caring way that Tracy behaves. Here sister, the main character, Jodi is portrayed as hard working, supporting her author husband who has been writing "the next big novel" for ten years, and while not making any money grumbles that his wife is busy working too much and doesn't help enough with the kids.

There are layers upon layers with the characters and I enjoyed this book very much.

I truly enjoyed reading The Housekeeper! The story is told in the first person by the narrator Jodi Bishop. Jodi has decided that it is time to hire a housekeeper to help her father, Vic, care for her mother who is in the late stages of Parkinson's disease. In enters Elyse Woodley- the perfect person for the job. Elyse quickly ingratiates herself in with the family and before Jodi realizes it, she realizes that Elyse is possibly not who she seems to be on the surface. It feels like Elyse is getting along almost too well with everyone and seems to be able to bond with people by targeting their weaknesses. Definitely a book that you won't be able to put down.

I will be the first to admit this: I really disliked the main character and found her to be rather dull and not willing to accept her share of blame in marital rules. I couldn’t really relate to her because I honestly found her to be dismissive to her so called loved ones, but also basically obsessed with her dad. Honestly some of the behaviors that Elyse exhibits toward Jodi and her sister are really nauseating. It makes it hard to grasp why they thought they were stuck 😂

Although I love Joy Fielding’s writing style (I’d read her grocery lists if she wrote them!), this latest book wasn’t quite as good as her last one (in my opinion). It was a very simple story without enough characters, and it was too predictable. I didn’t really like any of the characters, even the main one; I was frustrated that she let people talk to her in such a condescending way.

But it was a quick and easy read, and Joy Fielding stays on my list of authors I like! Thanks to NetGalley for sending me a copy to read!

Honestly, I felt bad for Jodi, but I really wanted to shake her and tell her to grow a backbone.
It seems that everyone in her life expected something from her, walked all over her and treated her like crap. Elyse seemed to be an answer to a prayer. With her mother’s health declining and her father not wanting to admit he needs help, Elyse is desperately needed. But all isn’t as it seems and Jodi soon finds herself thrust in to a nightmare.

I expected more with this story, including more suspense and more twists. It was easy to figure out early on where the book was headed. There were a couple unexpected twists, but a lot of the plot points were predictable. Jodi was a bit frustrating at times. In fact, most of the characters were. As I didn't care for the cast, I had a hard time connecting with and staying engaged in the storyline. It was somewhat disappointing overall.

This Housekeeper quickly grabbed my attention and did not let go! A housekeeper was hired to take care of aging parents, the mom having Parkinson’s and the dad, her long time care giver. One of the daughters hurriedly hires a woman for the job who seemed too good to be true. With enough twists and turns the plot moved quickly along. The author had just the right amount of suspense and the perfect chapter length to keep me reading just one more! Highly recommend! Another winner following her previous Cul-De-Sac! #TheHousekeeper #JoyFielding #NetGalley

I just reviewed The Housekeeper by Joy Fielding. #TheHousekeeper #NetGalley

Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group-Ballantine for my ARC in exchange for my honest review. This book will be published August 16, 2022.

This was my second book by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a quick read, full of unlikable characters: a critical father, a spoiled sister, an inattentive husband and an all-too-good-to-be-true caretaker.

The plot centers around a family that needs to hire a caretaker for their aging mom. What could go wrong? It’s twisted and fast-paced with an ending I loved! I felt like there was no way out…

Highly recommend.

Even though the reader is able to figure out where the book is going, there were still some unexpected surprises. The author made you care about Jodi and what she was going through, even though there were moments where she was so frustrating in her stupidity. Rounding out the main characters you had Tracy; Jodi’s selfish sister, and Harrison; Jodi’s unsupportive husband and frankly, very irritating. Jodi’s dad was a bully and Elyse was, well you will have to read the story yourself to learn the answer to that. The plot was typical, but somehow, the author still kept you on the edge of your seat with tension with the build up to the end. I highly recommend.

Been a Fielding fan for over 3 decades.
Didn't much like any of the characters in this one. Her later books lack the thrill of her earlier writings.
The last quarter of book was the best.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Joy Fielding's "All the Wrong Places" is still one of the best thrillers I've read; unfortunately "The Housekeeper" didn't appeal to me as strongly. Still, Ms. Fielding knows how to write a page-turner!
