Tess Gerritsen's Rizzoli and Isles Series is like reuniting with old friends and catching up on their lives. Listen to Me is not exception - it's wonderfully written and stay so true to the characters we've loved over the years. Jane is working on the murder of a lovely woman who - it seems - has no enemies and is a genuinely good person. Adding to her workload, is Angela (her mother), who is very involved in her neighborhood "watch" or is it Angela "watch" of the neighbors and the going ons. The relationship between the two women is fantastic, and then throwing Maura into the mix, makes for outstanding dialog and a fantastic read! Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for an ARC of this book for an unbiased review.
Having read all the books in this series, I was very familiar with the main characters and the writing style. This was the first one however, that was actually written as two totally different stories. While Detective Rizzoli was focused on solving a brutal murder, her mother was being a busy body in her neighborhood. Mrs. Rizzoli's part of the book was boring and she was such an unlikeable character, it made for a frustrating read. I really didn't care for this book at all.
I so was excited to see a new Rizzoli & Isles book - it has long been one of my go-to series. In this one, the narrative is mostly centered on Jane and Jane's mom Angela. We see a bit of Maura, and hopefully we will see more in the next book (see - I already want another one).
There are several plots going on - Jane and Frost are investigating the murder of a much loved nurse, and in the process meet a young woman who might be being stalked. Meanwhile, Angela is keeping an eye on all the neighborhood drama, and keeps calling Jane about her suspicions. In this book, I really grew to like our Italian mama.
I suspect this book would read ok as a standalone, but it's probably better reading through the whole series because it's good!
Big thanks to Tess Gerritsen, Ballentine, and Netgalley for letting me read an ARC of the book!
Thank you NetGalley, Tess Gerritsen and Random House Publishing Group for the ARC of Listen to Me. This is my personal review.
Oh, how I have missed Rizzoli and Isles! I was so filled with joy when I got this book to read! The story had everything a fantastic book could have. It was filled with murder, questions, and all the intrigue a good mystery has to give. I love a mystery that is not easy to figure out who the guilty person is and why the murder happened.
Everyone needs to pick this book up on publication day and get ready for a ride you will never forget.
Jane and Angela are fabulous in the latest Rizzoli and Isles offering by Tess Gerritsen. The action keeps charging forward with so many secrets and twists and turns with the professional and amateur sleuths trying to solve the crimes. Keep the exciting mysteries coming, Tess.
Boston Detective Jane Rizzoli and Medical Examiner Dr. Maura Isles team up again for a 13th episode in Listen To Me when an ICU nurse is found brutally murdered in her own home. Aided by her partner, Barry Frost, Jane is mystified by the apparent randomness of the killing of Sofia Suarez, a beloved nurse who was a recent widow. She becomes even more perplexed when, with the aid of a 15-year-old neighbor kid, Sofia’s computer history turns up some intriguing search information.
Adding to the mystery is the stalking of a female college student who turns out to have been a patient of Ms. Suarez, and her father, a physician was a colleague of the deceased nurse. The family is well off; the mother is very protective of her daughter, who has been traumatized by a hit-and-run accident and is still recovering from that episode. Now the stalker.
In another story arc, are “treated,” – shall I say? – to the shenanigans of Angela Rizzoli, Jane’s mother. Her boyfriend Vince is away caring for his sister, so she has way too much time on her hands. Now she’s the self-appointed neighborhood watch person. When new neighbors move in across the street, Angie becomes an amateur detective, or perhaps just an overactive busybody. When her detective daughter tells her in no uncertain terms to butt out, well, you can imagine how well that goes over. I found this story line to be somewhat distracting but hang in there. There’s actually a point to all this. There are other things happening in the neighborhood as well, and Angie is in the middle of all of it. It pays to pay attention.
As for the murder case, it’s more complex than first meets the eye. Ms. Gerritsen kept me turning the pages as I kept trying to figure out where the heck this was going to end up. I finally put it together about the same time the detective – the real one, Jane Rizzoli, did. If you’re wondering about Maura Isles, she is all business and helps nudge her pal Jane in the right direction as well. But – we learn something new about the always put-together Dr. Isles, along with her friends. It’s pretty terrific, actually. We get to see another very human side of her, which is very nice.
I wasn’t overly fond of all the crazy neighborhood stuff that was happening with Jane’s mother. A little bit went a long way for me. The search for the killer had me riveted, however. One other thing, though. I generally really love a story that gives me a great sense of place, and I don’t get that with this book, or with too many of the others in this series, now that I think of it. And Boston is a wonderful city. So, I’d like to see more Boston. But, as always, I love our protagonists.
I received Listen to Me as an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. My thanks to them, to Transworld Digital, and to the author. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
It is always a great time for me to be pulled back into a world With Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles. Listen to me is no exception. A story where I thought I had figured out all the twists and turns but turns out not all. The additional story with Angela was an added benefit and not a distraction from the main story. Definitely recommend for fans of Rizzoli and Isles. Star rating 4.5.
A good Rizzoli and Isles! Angela Rizzoli can't help sticking her nose in her neighbors' business-if you see something, say something, much to her daughter Jane's chagrin. While not always right, Angela does come to the rescue. Maura and Jane are investigating a murder of a much loved nurse and tracing connections that go back years.
Such a fun read! Not sure that I’ve read any of the titles in this series previously although I do remember the TV series. I enjoyed the different voices that alternates throughout the chapters, enjoyed roaming the streets around Boston where I once lived. So maybe a bit far fetched and a little east to figure out but all in all very fun!
Rizzoli and Isles #13
Detective Jane Rizzoli and Forensic Pathologist Maura Isles are investigating the gruesome murder of a nurse, whilst also protecting a young student from a stalker. But immersed in their day jobs, will they lose sight of something sinister happening much closer to home?
Jane and Maura are back solving crimes. And this time they are investigating an awful murder of a nurse. While also trying to keep a stalker away from a young girl. They are so busy they don’t have time for Angela.
This book starred Angie! While her neighborhood doesn’t have an official neighborhood watch, Angela and her quirky neighbors always know what’s going on. Except now. A man and woman have moved into the rental across from her and she knows in her gut something isn’t right about them. So when the police don’t have time for her and Vince is out of town, she begins to poke her nose into her neighbor’s business.
And this is one of those times when you are looking so hard at the one thing you believe is wrong while the trouble is really where you least expect it.
I have read all of the Rizzoli & Isles books and watched the series. Angela is so funny and such a loveable character. You can see where Jane gets her stubbornness from.
I loved this one.

It's been 5 years since the last Rizzoli & Isles book so happy to receive this advance read from @netgalley. As always, a great twisty murder to solve and a big subplot with Jane's mom Angela. Hope this means Tess Gerritsen has more coming!
It’s always fun to step back into the Rizzoli & Isles world. While this book is part of a series, I don’t think it’s necessary to have read the previous books in the series. Actually, I read the first 8 in the series and it seems I missed a few before reading this one.
This series is what got me back into reading several years ago. I started reading it because I was a fan of the TV series. While having seen the TV series obviously isn’t needed, it made is especially easy for me to jump right in and be able to picture all the characters, even if the descriptions in the book don’t always match up to the characters on TV.
For this story, while I had an idea of what happened, I didn’t know the full story or have all the pieces correct, so it was a bit of surprise when the full story was revealed. During the story I kept yelling at Jane, why aren’t you putting the pieces together, it’s so obvious – so I was glad when the outcome wasn’t completely what I thought.
I loved Angela’s side story. I enjoyed seeing her as the busybody neighbor and getting into everybody’s business. Typical Angela, am I right? Her story certainly added some additional suspense to the book.
As always, the relationships in these books really make the story, especially between Jane and her mother, Angela, and Jane and Maura.
I can’t wait to get caught up on the books in this series that I missed, as well as any future books in the series to come!
It has been many years since I have read a Rizzoli and Isles novel. It was like visiting an old friend. I love the characters Tess Gerritsen has created. This novel has a couple of storylines. Jane is investigating the case of a murdered and beloved local nurse. Her mother, Angela, is investigating her neighbors and suspicious activity on her street. It is suspenseful and has heart. There are some twists and turns that made the book hard to put down! Great read for old or new Gerritsen fans! Thank you to NetGalley and Ballantine for the ARC!
It was great to be back with these familiar characters. I think any fan of the series will enjoy. I liked having Angela’s POV but missed Maura in this book.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Random House Publishing Group- Ballantine and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Rizzoli and Isles are at it again and won’t disappoint you.
This wasn't quite the high stakes, sarcastic, enthralling Rizzoli and Isles that I know and love from the "original" series, but it's a solid suspense/mystery with well loved characters. I did enjoy Angela Rizzoli, although I would get a little confused on perspective at times. I ended up really enjoying this one, but it didn't pull me in and make me want more like the earlier books did.
Another great Gerritsen read! Typical Rizzoli and Isles. I loved the suspense and the title absolutely matched the content. Gerritsen is never too predictable and always leaves you guessing until the very end! I was happy to get more from Angela's POV in this book, she's a character who's never really had her moment, until now. I feel like Gerritsen will never run out of interesting, engaging stories and I'm all for it! Keep 'em coming please!
Rizzoli and Isles have been a favorite duo of mine for years! I love how the author has a story within a story and more than one mystery unraveling at once.
This mystery is no different and shows how far you are willing to go for the ones you love
Well golly gee - has it really been five years since I last Kindle-thumbed my way through the adventures of detective Jane Rizzoli and Forensic Pathologist Maura Isles? Big wonderful surprise: I received an advance copy of this one, the 13th (thanks to the publisher, via NetGalley). An even bigger one: I loved it.
Admittedly, Jane and Maura are the stars of the show - the characters I just can't get enough of; close behind is Jane's husband, Special Agent Gabriel Dean (who, I'm sorry to say, makes not much more than a cameo appearance here). If you're a fan of Jane's mother Angela, though, run out and get a copy immediately; this is her time in the spotlight. Even Maura takes a noticeable back seat to the very Italian mom.
There are also enough subplots to make three other books, I'm guessing - keeping readers on their toes and provided with insights as chapters shift mostly from the perspectives of Angela and Jane. There's a young woman who appears to have a stalker, a nurse who was slaughtered in her own home with no apparent motive and a couple of just-moved in secretive neighbors Angela is certain are up to no good (plus a couple of others who may not be quite the folks Angela always thought they were).
Eventually, Jane - with help from Maura and her capable partner Barry Frost - starts unraveling the tapestry of clues, revealing some long-ago connections that will prove instrumental to solving the stalking and murder cases. Meanwhile, Maura is proving instrumental in a different context, and Angela ignores advice that she should go back in the house and bake zucchini bread. But staying in the background is just not in her genetic make-up so - especially when no one will listen to her - what's a mother to do?
Nothing else to say except this: Welcome back, and pretty please listen to me and make it less time between this one and the 14th!
Rizzoli and Isles are finally back! They are busy trying to solve a murder of a nurse; a case that seems to have tentacles to other murder cases. On top of that, Jane's mother, Angela. has become a one-woman neighborhood watch. Angela is very suspicious of her new neighbors, and does not heed Jane's advice.
