Listen To Me was a fast paced read. I enjoyed revisiting the familiar characters in Tess Gerritsen’s newest entry in her Rizzoli and Isles series. The story had enough twists and turns to keep me fully engaged. I look forward to the next book in this series.
3.5 stars our of 5 - it has been 4+ years since reading the last installment of the Rizzoli & Isles series and while I don't remember much, I enjoyed this book more than the last few. The story focuses mostly on the murder and while there is finally some progress in their personal lives (especially for Maura), those details are not overdone or too present. I do wish we had some more medical details from Maura but that's a small complaint. Angela is quite annoying but that is the essence of who she is. There is just enough from her without it going over the top. Fans of the series will enjoy this book.
Rizzoli & Isles fans will excited to read another installment of this popular series. Fast paced with many twist and turns, Jane and her partner Frost race to find the connection between the brutal death of a surgical nurse and a hit and run survivor. Meanwhile Angela Rizzoli is becoming increasingly nosy as she strives to keep her neighborhood safe. Although the time frame and characters' ages are a little off to me, this is a very enjoyable read.
I absolutely love the Rizzoli and Isles series and I was super excited about this new book, however this just was not as good as earlier books. I liked different point of views and little "detective" work from Angela but I needed more from Maura and her ME expertise.
Overall it was a good mystery with many unexpected twists but it felt a little rushed and read more like a TV show and not a book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for the ARC in exchange for my review.
I absolutely LOVE these characters (and this series) and it was quite enjoyable getting to spend time with them again!
Jane Rizzoli is a detective with the Boston Police Department, with her partner Barry Frost. Their cases often call them to work with Forensic Pathologist Maura Isles. These three have worked together for a long time - they are family, and the tenor of their relationships with each other bears this out. Another character who often appears in the books is Angela Rizzoli, Jane's mother, who loves, mothers, and oversteps her boundaries with all of them.
The latest book in the series has the team dealing with the murder of Sofia Suarez, a dedicated and well-loved nurse; and the apparent stalking of a young girl. Angela, who considers herself the neighborhood watch person for her neighborhood is also constantly calling Jane with things that seem suspicious and that she wants her daughter to look into ("If you see something, say something!"). Jane tells her to call the police responsible for her neighborhood, but Angela replies "Why should I do that when my daughter is one of the best detectives in the Boston PD?"
This time, Angela proves that they should "Listen to Me!" as she provides key and keen insights necessary to solve the cases Jane and her team are working on.
A delightful and engaging read!
My thanks to Ballantine Books for allowing me to access an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley. All opinions stated in this review are my own and are freely given.
I've not read more than a couple of the other stories in the Rizzoli and Isles series. I completely enjoyed this one. The pacing was good. The pieces to the puzzle came out slowly and fit together nicely in the end. It was a great reminder that you never know what goes on behind closed doors. The characters are likable, and it was easy to pick up on their relationships without having read all the previous books in the series. I will likely read more of them now. I received an advance copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Sofia Suarez, a widow and a nurse, is murdered in her own home. Homicide detective Jane Rizzoli catches the case, but trying to find a reason for this apparently senseless killing of a person liked by all who knew her is proving difficult. She eventually makes a connection between this victim and a young victim of a hit and run accident months earlier, But tying up all the loose ends proves challenging. At the same time, Jane’s mother, Angela, is the neighborhood “watchdog.” She gets involved where she shouldn’t, of course, and Jane as well as the local police need to rein her in. And you may notice that I haven’t mention Maura Isles - she plays a bit part in this novel. This the 13th Rizzoli and Isles book by Gerritsen, but the first I have read in 10 years. As I looked back on my ratings, I was fairly enthusiastic about the series. But this book just never grabbed me. Obviously a lot has happened to both of the main characters in the intervening years, and perhaps that is why I didn’t really get into the book until the last 25%. And the Angela thread seemed distracting. This is a quick read, with a bit of a surprise at the end (although you might have a good idea of where things are going much earlier). My thanks to Ballantine Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review the ARC of this book.
As a Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Islea are completely involved in a senseless murder. Sofia Suarez a widow and nurse who was liked by neighbors lies bludgeoned to death in her own home. Sofia seems to have had plenty of secrets in her last days making calls to a trackless burner phone. When Jane connects Sofia and the victim of a hit and run from months earlier the case grows more confusing. The killer will do anything it takes to keep their secret. Meanwhile Jane’s mom Angela is having issues being a nosy neighbor the gossip about a runaway teen down the block and strange neighbors who just moved across the street. But Angela’s sure there no such thing as coincidence in her sleepy suburb if only Jane would listen. With Jane and Maura trying to solve Sofia’s case they lose sight of something sinister happening much closer to home. This was a very fast paced dective story. As a follow of Rizzoli and Isle’s I enjoyed the story very much and look forward to more stories.
Loved this new installment of Rizzoli & Isles - it fit in right where it left off. Thank you for the advanced copy!
I have been waiting forever for a new book to come out and it is finally here! Listen to Me is the 13th book featuring Boston detective, Jane Rizzoli, and Medical Examiner, Maura Isles and it did not disappoint.
The story is told mostly from the points of view of Jane and her mother, Angela. Jane is trying to solve the murder of a nurse found dead in her home. I loved following along with Jane and her partner as they try to determine if it is connected to a string of burglaries in the neighborhood or if someone was targeting the victim. This is always my favorite part of mysteries, sorting through clues and seeing if I can solve the case before the end. It always gives me satisfaction when I can, but it doesn’t take away from my reading experience.
The suspicious goings-on in Angela’s neighborhood are entirely separate from the main case, but it did not detract from the story. I liked how the author was able to connect the two plotlines together by having something discovered in one story relate to the other.
After five years, it was so fun to be reunited with two of my favorite characters. Here's hoping there will be another book in the works and I won't have to wait as long!
Listen to Me is the 13th book in the Rizzoli & Isles series. Love this series! This can be read as a stand-alone.
The story was told in 4 different POVs: Jane, Angela, Amy and Maura. There were so much going on in this book: a hit and run, a murdered nurse, a missing teen, a mysterious neighbor, an unsolved crime and a stalker. Even though I enjoyed Jane's murder case storyline the most, I felt like it took a backseat to Angela's storylines. Angela is the neighborhood snoop who feels like it is her duty to keep her neighborhood safe. And unfortunately, this part of the book wasn't as exciting.
This book was enjoyable but probably one of the weaker installments. The short chapters made it a fun and easy read.
Thank you to NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and Tess Gerritsen for a copy of "Listen to Me" in exchange of an honest review.
I give this book 4.5 stars
The book starts with college student Amy feeling like she is being following through campus late at night, and as she step out to to cross the street, is subsequently hit by a car.
Then Angela Rizzoli gets mysterious and secretive new neighbors and a young neighbor girl disappears. Are they connected? That’s something busybody Angela and her neighbors are trying to figure out.
Next we find cop Jane and medical examiner Maura at the murder scene of a nurse, who by all accounts is beloved by everyone who knew her.
We learn, in passing that the college student who was hit at the beginning of the book, is the daughter of the doctor in charge at the hospital where the nurse worked.
Around chapter 20, I got really engrossed in the book and forgot to take notes.
There were so many twists and turns I was not prepared for.
This book was so fantastic and definitely worth the 5 year wait for the continuing story of Rizzoli & Isles!
Listen To Me – Tess Gerritsen
It’s been a minute since I’ve read a Rizzoli & Isles novel, so I was very appreciative of Netgalley & Random House for selecting me to advance read.
On a snowy winter’s evening, a young woman slips off the sidewalk into the path of an oncoming car…
Fast forward, two months later…there’s a new couple in the old neighborhood and Angela Rizzoli, mother to Boston PD Detective Jane Rizzoli, is determined to learn what she can. A quick visit to introduce herself to the Green’s has her puzzled. The couple of aloof, and worst of all, have declines a loaf of Angela’s famous zucchini bread. Sensing something amiss, Angela intends to pay close attention.
Meanwhile, Jane and Coroner Maura Isles are on the scene of a homicide. A young woman, a nurse, has been beaten to death in her own home. By all accounts, Sofia was a respected and well-liked nurse who worked at the local hospital. Who would want to kill her, and why? From all accounts, she appeared to live a quiet life. As Jane and Maura process the scene, it becomes apparent that the victim had a computer – yet, it is nowhere to be found.
As Jane’s investigation intensifies, she learns that Sofia had ben reaching out to old colleagues, and even called her old employer, a hospital in Maine – but no one seems to know what she may have been trying to find. While canvassing the neighborhood, Jane learns that a young teenage neighbor was known to assist Sofia occasionally.
Back in the neighborhood, Angela’s suspicions grow as she watches the new neighbors – for a couple moving in, why isn’t there any furniture – why are the blinds closed all the time and why is he installing bars on the windows? And oh – now Angela has caught a glimpse of a gun! These people cannot be up to good. With Jane neck deep in her own investigation, Angela takes things into her own hands, only to quickly find she’s in way over her head.
Told from the points of view of Angela, Maura and Jane, these seemingly separate storylines culminate into a complex tale that is guaranteed to keep you alternately laughing at Angela’s shenanigans and frantically turning the pages to see what happens next as each storyline intersects for a stunning conclusion – this one had me guessing all the way to the end!! Great read! Great series!!

Many thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book! It did not disappoint. As with all the other books I've read in the Rizzoli and Isles series, it was a page-turner. I especially like that it was told from different characters' points of view, but was not confusing. I also liked that Rizzoli's mom, Angela, had a major part in this story, Definitely recommend for those who like suspense and crime stories.
Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli and Isles series has been a must read for me for many years, so I was thrilled when I was approved for arc of Listen to Me, the newest book in the series.
This upcoming addition to the series finds Detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles on the on the case of the murder of a middle aged widow found bludgeoned to death in her home. With no clear suspects in sight it will take both their skills and instincts to crack the case.
Meanwhile, in a parallel storyline Rizzoli’s mother, Angela finds herself alone at home while her boyfriend is out of town. With a little too much free time on her hands she wonders why her new neighbors never leave the house and have put bars on their windows. And what about the mysterious van that is suddenly appearing on their street? Taking inspiration from her detective daughter, she is determined to find the answers.
This book was such a fun read for me. It was like revisiting family. The characters are that well drawn. This book had a little bit of everything- mystery, suspense, darkness and humor. I love that Angela was finally given the spotlight. Her version of Rear Window had genuine suspense and made me laugh a lot. It was a great counter balance to the dark atmosphere of the rest of the novel. The central murder case twists and turns and ends with something I didn’t see coming. Gerritsen does a wonderful of weaving and connecting the threads of the disparate storylines together and creating a thriller you cannot put down. I’ve missed Rizzoli and Isles and loved spending time with them again.
Thank you to NetGalley and Ballantine books for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love all Tess gerristen books so I may well be bias but this book is no different. Jane's mother has always been an interesting character so seeing her arc develop definitely offered a fresh look to the arc. This is a book that would easily work as a standalone and I have already mentioned it as a great book to friends. Brilliant gripping and I read in a day
Loved this one. Well drawn out suspense—as expected—and Jane’s feisty mom Angela is a real treat! Of course it’s always a most welcome return to have a new Rizzoli & Isles; this is definitely one series that hasn’t gotten stale.
Listen to Me is book number 13 in the 13 book Rizzoli and Isles series by Tess Gerritsen. It works well as a standalone. I have enjoyed reading books from this series as well as watching the show on television, and I am sorry to see it ending.
While the main characters are the same as the ones on the show, they do have some difference. Isles doesn't seem quite as confident in the books and Rizzoli has a husband and daughter. This is a good reason to always read the books to find out how the author actually portrayed the people.
The plot is intricately woven and excellent as always There are multiple layers which come together as the story unfolds. Rizzoli's mother has an active role in the book, at times her nosiness get's her in difficult situations.
I am looking forward to seeing what Gerritsen comes up with next.
This book was so good! I want to see more from this author in the future!! I couldn't put this book down. What a page turner!!!
Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles are involved in solving a completely senseless murder. Sofia Suarez, a widow and nurse who was liked by her neighbors, was killed in her own home. Jane finally makes a connection between Sofia and the victim of a hit-and-run from earlier, the case only grows more confusing. Jane mother, Angela Rizzoli is the neighborhood watch captain who notices everything on her street and there are some strange things happening that just do not add up. Things seem to happen and soon Jane's case and her mother's neighborhood happenings seem to be linked together.
