Restaurant busboy Benny Walsh collects celebrity autographs. That hobby gives John Lahr a chance to roast celebrities while touring New York. The novel’s dark humor at times seems appropriate to a lurid comic book from the 1940s. As a collection of startlingly good sentences, the novel is almost worth reading, but the sentences fail to cohere into a worthy novel. The Autograph Hound, first published in 1973, already feels dated.
