I am impressed with this book. There was a rich source of information here - complete with worldwide examples showing an interconnected world and the impact of climate change, pollution and the importance of water on us all as a collective planet.
Great eye catching illustrations that add to the books text. While I liked the cover, I expected something different from this book as a result however it is a serious book with a good balance of colour and a layout that helps keep a young reader engaged.
Fresh Air, Clean Water written by Megan Clendenan and illustrated by Julie McLaughlin was a great book. Kids need more books like this–it teaches kids the principles of environmentalism and is a great crash course. It covers lots of important topics like pollution, environmental activism, lobbying and more! It is a great lesson in science and teaches us about the environment and what we can do to save it. A great book for teachers and educators.
Don't judge a book by its cover: This book had much more substance than I would have guessed from the cover! I loved the worldwide view of pollution, energy, water, etc. that the author took. The book included examples from India, Poland, China, the U.S., Canada, and more. It did a great job of highlighting the collective impact of people's actions on the climate.
Most of the graphics were great and easy to understand for the target age bracket. Some of the layout/formatting reminded me of a textbook, like the "You Be the Judge" boxes, but they posed challenging questions for youth to consider. While the book definitely encourages activism, it fairly pointed out the necessity or benefits of using some chemicals, flying in a plane, etc.
Middle readers will be sure to learn more about the climate crisis from this book, and hopefully feel inspired to take action of their own, like the other teens highlighted throughout the book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for and advance e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
