Blows my mind with the twists!
Casey finds a person drowning in the lake. It turns out to be her new neighbor, Katherine Joyce. Casey saves Katherine and they quickly become friends. Katherine says she hasn’t been feeling herself lately. Casey finds her deceased husband’s binoculars and while she’s doing her daily routine of drinking liquor, she spies on Katherine and her husband Tom. She notices arguing and suspicious behavior between them. Then the next day, Katherine is no where to be found. Casey immediately suspects Tom. The twists kept me guessing and I couldn’t read the book fast enough! I can’t say much more about the characters or storyline without spoilers. Highly recommended for readers that like suspense and twists, 5 stars!

I had high expectations for this book but I'm not sure why anymore. It took me months to read 20% of this one (since may) and to be honest, i didn't read much after that... i just couldn't read about another drunk unreliable girl as a narrador. The writing style was alright, so was the characters, location, the foreshadowing of a romance with the other alcoholic dude. I read some reviews saying that was a "weird" plot twist and well, maybe that's why it felt so flat and basic in the beginning.
If you were a fan and loved "The last time I lied", you'll probably enjoy this one as well. Very similiar "vibe".

This book was really riveting and quite funny until about half way through when the plot just got ridiculous with supernatural elements. I kept reading until the end but was very disappointed. It could have been such a great book.

“What is marriage but a series of mutual deceptions?”

Bookstagram is like one big Riley Sager fan club so when I starting to see the meh reviews for this one I was nervous!!

What starts off as a thriller you’ve read probably 100 times before, a recently widowed woman who drinks way too much has a penchant for spying on her neighbors sees something she wasn’t supposed to, turns into a not so predictable story. I’ve seen plenty of reviews that hated the twist, but honestly it saved it for me. I didn’t see it coming and since this one starts off pretty slow and cliche I was glad for it.

I’ve rated it 3⭐️s - I liked it! This review is short because, as always, it’s impossible to talk about thrillers too much without giving things away. But I will say if you’re a Sager fan and have been put off by bad reviews of this one, just give it a chance. Is it my favorite by him? No. But it’s still overall it’s enjoyable and a quick binge-worthy read!

Riley Sager is a go to author for me! I always look forward to his books. Thank you to netgalley, Dutton Publishing, and Riley Sager for my arc.

I really enjoyed this book. The plot was brilliant. It did start off kind of slow, but in between the slow parts, there was enough action and twists to keep you interested. One of my favorite things, was the fact that there were very few characters. You were able to really get invested in the characters. I was not a huge fan of Casey though. As annoying and depressing her character was, it really evolved her plot line.

Riley Sager can do no wrong. The House Across the Lake is an excellent addition to his previous works. Sager is a star in the horror genre and deserves to be recognized as such. The story follows Casey, a widowed actress escaping the press, as she stays at her family's cabin on the lake. She spends her time drinking and watching neighbors - most fascinated by the house across the lake and the glamorous couple who lives there. When the wife suddenly disappears, Casey gets suspicious. But is it ever a good idea to go snooping in other people's lives? Riley Sager makes a stale concept (alcoholic thinks she sees something but isn't quite sure she saw what she thinks she saw) fresh and surprising. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys suspenseful thrillers.

Thank you so much Net Galley for letting me have an advanced copy of this book! I had never read a Riley Sager book prior to this one and I am glad to say I really enjoyed this. I was definitely not expecting anything supernatural in this book but nevertheless I really liked that component of the book. It gets so much better as you keep reading!

Thanks Netgalley for an early copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review!

This was my first Riley book and I’m certain it won’t be my last, the writing style was really great and easy to dive into from page one. The tropes used were done well, but for me I just found the first half of the book quite slow.
When the ‘twist’ was revealed and everything fell into place it wasn’t a total jawdropper for me, even though it was unexpected I prefer my thrillers a little more believable, otherwise it loses its tension and suspense for me.

A great book though and worth reading if you fancy a thriller that’s a little different to all of the others

This was my first Riley Sager book, so I was unsure what to expect. The title and premise appealed to me, and it was a great read to enjoy on the cottage dock. The supernatural element was unexpected, and while not remarkably realistic, it made the book unique from other titles in the same genre. I enjoyed the writing style and pace of the book and thought there was a good balance between character and plot development (I tend to prefer plot-driven books). Sager also builds a tense atmosphere quite well, using the wilderness almost as a character in and of itself. I would read more titles by this author for sure.

This is yet another Sager's book which I devoured in a single sitting. The setting, unreliable characters, the tension build-up, short chapters and supernatural angles make it unputdownable for me. He knows how to keep his readers guessing.

I have to admit that I resented this book in the beginning as the story seemed too familiar, but the author put an unpredictable twist to it that I kept turning pages. I am glad that I didn't read the synopsis first. A woman dealing with alcoholism and snooping up on neighbours using binoculars? I'd have second thoughts about liking it and would end up comparing it to "The Woman In the Window", which I loved.

If you love reading thrillers, I'd highly recommend it.

This was a good thriller, but only for the last 40 percent. Otherwise it's a pretty slow read. I liked the main character despite all of her obvious flaws and issues. I liked the twists at the end of the book but a lot of the story was boring. I still enjoyed it but I didn't love it.

What happens when you are convinced the lady who lives across the lake has been murdered by her husband? When I started reading this I thought, "Darn. It's another unreliable narrator who drinks too much and can't remember what she saw." But then I remembered this was a Riley Sager novel and was delighted with the supernatural twist. Lots of layers and surprise turn of events. Definately recommeneded.

This is a who-done-it murder mystery thriller that takes a hard turn into the super natural. I can say that I truly did not see where this one was going.

Casey Fletcher is an actress who is fleeing bad press after the death of her beloved husband. She retreats to the family’s lake house, despite the fact that this is where he husband drowned. #partner @prhaudio

Casey spends her days drinking and spying on the house across the lake. When she saves former supermodel, Katherine Royce, from drowning, the two strike up a friendship. It becomes clear that Katherine and her husband are having some serious issues- after all, you find out a lot of things when watching the neighbors all day through binoculars.

Some points in the story moved slowly for me and at one point, the story nearly lost me. But, I am so glad that I kept reading. There were definitely surprises that I did not see coming.

This was my first Riley Sager book and I’m not sure what I was expecting but this wasn’t if. I don’t want to have any spoilers but suffice it to say that you will need to suspend some belief to make it through this title. A solid page turning thriller with more than one twist. Thank you NetGalley and the Penguin Group for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you so much to Penguin Publishing and NetGalley for the Arc of this book! MAN OH MAN!!! What a twister indeed! While this one wasn’t my favorite the plot twist after the story initially was over threw me for a loop!! I love how Riley doesn’t fall into the weird romanticizing of addiction like some authors do, he showed a real person with real struggles, and by romanticizing I mean by not making the character feel the after affects of their addiction, some authors like to describe how happy their character feels when indulging in their addiction and not the after of guilt, shame, and loneliness so I do appreciate that!

This one was a little more paranormal and I was all here for that aspect. It took me a long time to get into this, at 25% I was still struggling but I had a friend push me to finish and I am glad she did. The story really picked up at that point and we started getting more glimpses into what was really happening.
Casey is back at her family's lake house after her husband died in the lake a year ago. She is washed up, a drunk and has been fired from her last movie. She sees a woman laying face down in the lake, and rushes to rescue her. She pulls her out and it seems like she is dead, until she isn't. She coughs and sputters out water and is seemingly revived and grateful for Casey saving her. Soon after, Katherine (the woman from the lake) befriends Casey, but as soon as she does, she goes missing and after seeing things across the lake, Casey thinks Katherine's husband is to blame. There are so many twists and turns here and wordplay to make you think you know what is happening but it really isn't. I enjoyed the twist and wasn't expecting the second one, but I really liked that fact too. There were some inconsistencies I am having trouble processing though. I liked this one, but I didn't love it as much as Riley's other works. I will continue to read any book he puts out though. 3.5 stars. Thank you to PRH, Netgalley and Riley Sager for an early copy.

I always love Riley Sager's work! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the atmosphere of the lake houses. Rated 4 stars since I wasn't a huge fan of the twist- however it did surprise me and I wasn't able to guess what would happen. I would definitely recommend for fans of Riley Sager's other work.

The House Across the Lake is my 4th Riley Sager read - and I wasn't disappointed one bit.

This story was so captivating, enchanting, gripping, and a page-turner. I loved the setting, the characters, and the story-telling.

The "then" and "now" POV was perfect for this book, because it kept you wondering. There were so many twist and turns, especially during the last 40% of the book. My jaw dropped a couple times.

Overall, one of my new favorite Sager books. I highly recommend if you're a fan of thrillers.

There has been a lot of really smart, expertly executed horror about widowhood these days, and Riley Sager's THE HOUSE ACROSS THE LAKE is a great addition to this roster. Sager depicts the fragility and loneliness that often accompanies devastating loss, and cleverly uses it as a catalyst for the plot-- it explains why Casey is so wrapped up in the lives of her perfect seeming neighbors, and perhaps why she stays involved once it is revealed their lives may not be so perfect. Riley Sager has delivered us many propulsive, addicting thrillers, and this is no exception.
