Attorney Alex Turner is the female Good Luck Chuck; all of her exes marry the next woman they date after her. She starts to wonder what went wrong and goes on a quest to get answers. Along the way, family friend Will Harkness joins her quest.
This was an interesting premise and something I haven't seen too much of in romance. Usually the woman is portrayed as a hopeless romantic, but that definitely not what happened here. Alex reminds me a lot of myself, but her some reason, her character fell somewhat flat for me. Will as the romantic interest was just ok, I didn't really feel the sparks between them.
The writing could use a little work; it just didn't flow well in my opinion. It wasn't horrible but it seemed a little clunky at times. Overall this was an ok romance, but could be better with some tweaking.
Thank you, next is the book for anyone who loves rom-coms!! To be honest when I first read the book I thought it was going to have some kind of semblance to Ariana Grande’s song but it’s still a lot of fun to read … just not what I initially thought it was going to be.
Thanks for this digital reviewer copy, next?
I wish I could love this book a little more! The blurb promised so much fun! It reminded me of Dan Cook’s Good Luck Chuck movie: all girls Chuck dates, finds their soulmate to get marry as soon as they sleep with him! Alex shares the same fate: her exes find their HEA as soon as they break up from her! She might be a good luck charm for them but she might keep doing something wrong and she also earned her own HEA, didn’t she?
Alex and her friends’ teaming up for the entertaining journey to help Alex have her closure with the ghosts of past boyfriends and Alex and Will’s sexy chemistry filled with enemies to lovers theme raised my expectations BUT… the book was a little aimless and slow burn.
Mostly we get lost inside the nonstop inner dialogues of the MCs who keep thinking the same thing in repetitive cycle : they don’t like each other and they shouldn’t be together.
The last third the pace finally picked up but I wish the entire book was a little bumpy ride!
I connected with the supportive girlfriends more than the MCs!
Unfortunately I didn’t like this book as much as I enjoyed her previous work. The plot idea was great but the execution was a little underdeveloped. So I’m giving three solid stars!
But I still look forward to read the next works of the author!
Special thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in my honest thoughts.
This was just ok. The premise was awesome but I didn't feel like it was lived up to. The misunderstanding between Alex and Will wasn't that compelling and it wasn't intense enough to feel like a genuine enemies-to-lovers but there was enough bad blood that other tropes also didn't fit.
I was disappointed with this book. The blurb sounded so promising and it could have been a great story, but it just fell short. First of all the technical issues (which I'm hoping will be corrected before this book goes to publish)... In my opinion Lexi and Alex are too similar of a name for two of the leading characters (so much so that they are mixed up and used incorrectly multiple times in the book!), the author also changes the name of the friend's husband more than once in the story. I had to go back and re-read just to make sure I was following. There were definitely some fluidity issues that need to be edited before the final copy.
Secondly, the characters had way too much inner dialogue. And it was so repetitive. We get it. You don't like each other. You don't want each other. You think the other is not for you.... and yet Will seems to switch his opinion in the blink of an eye. I also thought it was strange that he wanted Alex to speak with his ex-wife. It seemed as though there were a lot of stereotypical explanations and excuses for the way Alex and Will acted and/or avoided each other. I didn't need an explanation for every.little.decision. they made.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group, for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is very much an Andie J. Christopher book. Unfortunately, this is not my favorite work by her. The characters’ internal dialogue kept repeating the same well-established information which made it difficult to stick around for the heart of the story. There are only so many times we need to see them thinking about how much they don’t want each other. We got it. I was a little disappointed with this one.
Thank you to the publisher and @NetGalley for the E-ARC copy of this book. The rating of this book is entirely of my own opinion. #ThankYouNext #NetGalley
Oh, Alex and Will! I wanted to alternately hug them both and knock some sense into both of them, and that’s when I know how good a book is! This was an interesting story, with an even more interesting cast of characters!
I really enjoyed this book! The slow burn, enemies to lovers was SO well done! Also the couple spicy scenes were pretty good!
I loved Alex’s growth as she learned more about herself and why she was afraid and uninterested in commitment.
My only issue was the super startling/quick ending. I feel like an epilogue would have really rounded out the book. I swiped hoping I was missing something but nope. It was “all sounds good… and END!” Which I found jarring.
Thank You, Next is a good fun read! The sparks are there, the tension is there, and of many romance novels I've read, this was the most realistic emotional stakes and baggage for two romantic characters I've come across. Andie J. Christopher gives us not only a satisfying story, but also more complex social dynamics (I defy anyone to read this story and not walk away loving Alex's grandmother!). Thanks NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!
This story had potential but really fell flat until the last quarter of the book. I've really enjoyed Andi Christopher's other books, and this one just wasn't for me.
Ideally, the story should have started with a flashback to the "pool moment" Will and Alex constantly reference throughout the book. Will should have been more involved in the tracking down Alex's past boyfriends, but a story focused on Alex helping Will with his divorce would have better served the story. The last quarter really picks up, and the story feels more fleshed out. I didn't enjoy the psychological analyses that were constantly brought up.
The supporting cast in this book are phenomenal. Lexie's presence brings some much needed humour, and Jane and Lana are wonderful friends. There is great representation (someone is pansexual, and a non binary character) which is incredibly refreshing.
