I do not know who else needed to hear this selection of poems by Amanda Lovelace, but I sure do. I needed this so bad. This touched my heart and hurt me. I feel attacked and warmed at the same time. I felt heard and loved.
"She is her own goddamn fairytale"
I sure am. I do not need anyone to save me. I can save myself in my own fairytale.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of the audiobook for break your glass slippers by Amanda Lovelace in exchange for my honest review.
Thoughts:
Audiobook: I thought Lovelace (who narrated the book herself) did an excellent job. However, I am not sure her poetry is really meant to be listened to without the text in front of you. I wanted to see the structure of the poem and be able to fully appreciate the writing. (I would say this is probably true of any poetry that is not specifically written as spoken word poetry though.)
Content: I was excited to receive this arc as I teach a high school level poetry class and many of my students rave about Lovelace's poems. I do see the appeal as she is honest and edgy and talks about real issues. However, her poetry is not for me personally. To me, it read like a series of inspirational Instagram posts and though the sentiments are true and important it was very surface level. I wanted her to play more off of the fairytale inspiration, but instead the takeaway was: life isn't a fairytale and you need to love yourself. As I said, I get why my students like her, but I am not sure adults would find her writing worthwhile.
Empowering.
I want to highlight so many parts of this book.
I want to have all my friends read this.
SISTERS. Read this. This is what it must be like to have a Fairy Godmother. A love song from the feminine to the feminine. Find your worth if you haven't yet!
(This would make an excellent Galantine's gift!)
MY favorite thing about Amanda Lovelace novels are the uplifting messages that can be interwoven in such dark and heavy topics. I think that aspect resonated strongly in Break Your Glass Slippers. Sometimes, you must remember the main character is yourself.
break your glass slippers was absolutely lovely and I wish it was around for me to read when I was a teenager. As a 30-year-old, it still held valuable + value-affirming words that I will cherish for a long time. Highly recommend for women (and tbh, everyone) of all ages.
I've loved Amanda Lovelace for a while and read most of her work. I'm happy to have received an ARC for the audiobook of Break Your Glass Slipper. The fairytale reference and the urging of being your own fairy godmother, your own true love, your own savior is inspiring and exactly what I enjoy about Lovelace's work. It's about never letting the other define you but about learning to define yourself, and learning to be okay by yourself.
To have the book be read by Lovelace herself is a plus and I really loved it. It"s a quick listen and I truly liked listening to it.
Amanda Lovelace, to me, feels like one of the most recognizable modern day poets. Even without knowing it, I guarantee everyone has probably read or heard one of her poems. The best part about these audiobooks is hearing the cadence Amanda means for her poems to be read in, which just adds another layer to their meaning. Absolutely lovely.
I love all of Amanda Lovelace's poetry and break your glass slippers, especially spoke to me.
The book is filled with gorgeous illustrations and lovely, poignant poems in the forms of self-realizations, notes from the fairy godmother, as well as other voices that come together in this collection to tell a story of another princess who ultimately has all she needs within her the entire time.
Modern, feminist, and empowering, the follow up to the 'women are some kind magic' series is perfect and I'm looking forward to hearing what more the 'you are your own fairy tale' series has in store for us.
Lovelace narrates the audiobook herself and listening to the book in the spoken word style was absolute perfection. I highly recommend it for this book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy.
Thank you net gallery for letting me review this book. The author is very relatable with her poetry. I like how the fairy godmother ends up being the reader's own voice.
I love Amanda Lovelace’s poetry. She has a great voice. She always has something written to relate to. Her words are powerful. Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the opportunity to listen in exchange for a review.
"so often we are our own one true love."
This book is a gem. It makes me want to cut out each poem and tape them around my house to remind myself that I'm a gem too. I do think it reads a bit more like affirmations than poetry, but it's a feel good book that should be required reading for teen girls everywhere.
“fairy godmother says you don’t need to look a certain way to deserve someone’s heart. no matter your shape— no matter your size— be proud of all the space your body dares to take up.”
Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
“Be sure to armour your kind, kind heart.”
This is my first dive into a poetry audiobook. Very different from my usual choices. Narrated by the author, this is the perfect way to listen to her pieces.
Break your glass slippers is a collection of poems about love and accepting yourself despite those around you; inspired by the fairytale Cinderella. This book is relatable and empowering and I loved every bit of it.
“Nobody can ever own your magic. It’s yours and yours alone”
We all need a wise fairy godmother to tell us exactly what we need to hear. And sometimes I that fairy godmother needs to be ourselves.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
break your glass slippers by Amanda Lovelace is a series of poems essentially about self-love and acceptance. While I do think the topic itself is important and relevant, I didn't enjoy the poems themselves.
The audio book is narrated by Amanda Lovelace herself, which I think is very cool, but she doesn't add much emotion to the poems. It was still a solid audio book.
Overall, I think this collection can have value, just not for me. If you enjoy Rupi Kaur or other artists like that, give it a try.
Part 1:
I love the dynamic between the stepmother's negative feedback and the godmother's positive affirmations.
The fairy godmother brings me hope and joy within these pages. She's so full of wisdom and spouts poetic about all the nastiness that is thrown toward "Cinderella".
The part where "she" circles all the parts of her body that she wants to change/doesn't like - that part broke my heart because so many people I know feels/has felt like this. The wisdom imparted by the godmother -> "some days your body will feel like a cage, on those days, lace flowers through the bars."
Other favorite image (not word for word from the poem, but the image that comes to my mind when I listened to it): if your significant other doesn't love you just as much in your sweats and messy bun, then they don't deserve you in your heels and pearls. I am so gosh darn lucky that mine loves me in both just the same.
Part 2:
"Your self worth does not go down when your weight goes up." -> Damn. This one hit me in the feels as I have struggled with my weight going up and down since high school. Why do we feel this way? Why do we let culture and society make us feel like our weight and worth are tied together?
"Always protect your peace." -> Amen. I cannot agree with this more. And I will continue to do whatever I need to do to protect my own peace and happiness.
"Some kinds of magic just don't call to each other." -> This took me a LONG time to learn. Friends will come and go. Some stay longer than others. Some circle back to being a major part of your life. Some are only around for a short and intense time. Some were intense friendships, but fizzled out to a once in a blue moon cup of tea. Some are close to your heart even when you only talk once a month, year, decade. I still struggle with this at times.
Part 3
Main message: be your own damn fairy tale.
I love Amanda Lovelace's writing. It's empowering and magical. I enjoy her audiobooks as well because the poet herself is the narrator. I feel like that's the best way to listen to poems since they know how it 'should' be read out loud.
A completely novel approach to the Retelling genre.
For those of us who grew up loving fairy tales but always craved more.
This fits perfectly with Lovelace's Women Are Some Kind of Magic Series, which is high praise in itself.
I often say that we tend to be much kinder to the people we love than we are to ourselves.
We would never say half the stuff we tell ourselves in our worst moments to our loved one - and isn't that really telling?
This book is like a conversation with a loved one, it strips away the harshness we often inflict on ourselves and softens the edges, soothes the hurt.
I had the great pleasure of experiencing this book a second time in audiobook format, narrated by the author herself.
There was no one better to perform this piece than the person who brought it into existence.
Break Your Glass Slippers is a clever, relatable book of poetry. Poetry isn’t my favorite genre, but I like Amanda Lovelace. Her poems are easy to understand and it is easy to find yourself in her powerful words. Her books are an important message to young girls everywhere, “You are your own fairytale!”
“Go after what you want.”
“Don’t let your “Prince” treat you badly under any circumstance.”
“Speak Your truth. No matter what.”
“You rule yourself.”
I look forward to listening to the rest in this series!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
I love Amanda Lovelace, I love her works and I love this audiobook. Hearing a poetry collection from the voice of the poet sends chills through my body and makes it that much more my favourite.
I recently got the chance to read Amanda's newest book and instantly fell in love with it. So requesting this one as soon as I saw it was inevitable.
I've to say it didn't disappoint at all. I love the themes, the poems, the narration, everything. It's written with so much care and so many pieces not only hit right home but are also very inspiring.
Thank you for providing me with an arc in exchange for a review!!
