Author: Amanda Lovelace ~ Title: Break Your Glass Slippers ~ Narrator: Amanda Lovelace
Content: 3.5 stars ~ Narration: 5 stars
This is my second collection of poems by Amanda Lovelace. The first was Flower Crowns & Fearsome Things, which I think was very good. Break Your Glass Slippers is part of the collection You Are Your Own Fairytale. I listened to all three audiobooks. You can listen to these audiobooks in any order you choose. Or even listen to just one and you will be able to enjoy it without the feeling you are missing something. Make sure you listen to trigger warnings at the beginning of this audiobook.
Break Your Glass Slippers is a collection of mostly short poems inspired by the Cinderella fairytale. I liked the music at the beginning and the end. I liked the poetry and the general idea. But all sounded a bit too much like a self-help book than poetry. The first part of the collection I liked more than the second.
Amanda Lovelace is also the narrator of her poetry book and I liked that. She did an excellent job, as always.
Thanks to Andrews McMeel Audio for the ALC and this opportunity! This is a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.
Listening to this on audio definitely changed the experience completely! I had tried reading this poetry collection physically when it first came out a few years ago and it just didn't vibe with me. The author narrates it and I think that it made everything flow a lot better, since she knows exactly what rhythm she wanted for it. Some of the poems hit me deep and a few just fell flat, but I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this little series on audio!
It's always nice to hear poetry read by its author. Although I love Amanda Lovelace's work I did find the soft reading of her poems a little passionless. It can be nice to speak quietly about such sensitive subjects but at other times when she's talking about women being wronged it would be better to have a little more feeling behind it. Over all I did connect with the poems and found empowerment in her words, it just felt more quiet and subdued than her other works.
This was the first book I've read by Amanda Lovelace. I loved it so much! This poetry book collection is so raw and emotional. I want to read all of Amanda's backlist.
@ladybookmad thank you for writing what every girl, and woman (young and old) should hear about who they really are - amazing just they way they are!!! Many thanks to @andrewsmcmeel for making this available on @netgalley and for approving me for this audio of the poetry book.

loved this!!
This is my second book being read by Amanda Lovelace and all I have to say is just how can she write so amazingly and touch my heart.
I listened to the audiobook and I just loved everything about it from the bg music production to Amanda's soft and melodies voice teaching and telling a lot from her amazing poems, they are such a good source of self-improvement for oneself and doing one and most important favour for oneself. I had a great time listening twice and Ik I'll be listening many more times. I love how she portrayed the emotions there.
This audiobook is simply amazing. Amanda's message is clear in her words and voice.
The cover and title suggest that it may revolve around Cinderella and it is true, the poems are filled with that effect, are so a work of fiction as the poet tells us at the beginning of the audiobook itself but the poems are so much more reality-based as well.
The poems are filled with empowerment, courage, self-fulfilment and more than anything seeing how you are special in your own way, believing that and making sure you understand the lesson, filled with so much truth it might hurt but wait, it always comes with an accompanying truth which encourages a lot. She also comments on hot topics with preciseness and makes sure to hit the target, when I read that certain poem, I got wowed and it was amazing. The poems hold truth and each one is alluring in itself. So many nicely put illustrations as well. This book is kinda magical. By the end of it, you'd be confident in yourself, be able to relate, have enjoyed a lot and would love yourself, it is a very important thing to practice. I did have a problem with a certain poem but the poet fixed it right in the next poem and I loved how she did it.
The poems laced with so much comfort, if I could I'd write all of them down. I feel like listening to them again and again. If I walk into a bookstore now, which is kinda far from where I live and I find this book, I'll hold it to my heart and bring it home.
So many emotions and at the same time being so simple and clear. This is a book I'd love to listen to again and again.
Amanda has filled this poetry with lovely poems, messages and her lovely voice which lures one to just keep listening to her soft voice and melodious tone.
I feel this is a very good anthology to gift a female teenager and be read by her and also elder females should read and listen to the book as well. I'll put the links for the book in the description as well.
The book starts with Trigger warnings:
Trauma, child abuse, toxic friendships and relationships, and more. However I did not feel triggered at all (is something wrong with me?)
Will keep this review pretty concise:
1 Great theme, objective and purpose of the story.
2 The Cinderella retelling description would only be partially correct
3 The context was delivered more in a dialogue format than in a poetry(as per description) format - would recommend that to be changed
4 The story book was little short and the end was abrupt for me🤷♀️
I LOVE that this is narrated by the author. I do think that poetry should be seen as well as heard, so listening to this in conjunction with the print version would be even more powerful. I appreciate hearing the voice of healthy women helping others understand the strength and power and truth that lies within each woman! This series of poetry collection is one that girls and women searching for the power within themselves would do well to read. I love that there are answers and lessons given by books she's read.
This was disappointing. It felt more like life lessons getting shoved down your throat than actual poetry. Also, the swearing was unnecessary. It brought absolutely nothing to the book and made me cringe.
I love going through each of the books in this collection by Amanda Lovelace and seeing how she changes the structure in each. This book was no exception, using a fairy godmother to impart the wisdom the character needs. Break Your Glass Slippers is a beautiful collection of poetry about self love and inner strength.
I first "met" Amanda Lovelace in book form. This was the first time I heard her voice - and it made a powerful read even more so for me... I think the decision to have her read her own work was an inspired one. There is no way a voice actor, regardless of how talented, could ring true quite the way she does. She reads like she's telling you a story, and it resonates.
I actually read the second in this series before listening to this one (you don't have to read them in order), so was familiar with the flow of the pieces and the different presentation formats (the call-and-response type "XX says" in response to a "citation" from a specified point of view, the storybook narrative component, the confessional bits). I think that helped me feel the coherency of the entire thing in a different way than if I'd listened alone. Not to say that you have to read it/see it first, just that - for me - this visualization helped me keep things organized in my head while I listened in a way that I liked.
The pieces themselves are moving and powerful and lovely. She has a magical way of capturing even the darkest moments and making their painful truth ring with a lyrical tenor that I find incredible. If you aren't familiar with her work, you really should try it. I'm not normally one for confessional pieces or pain-riddled memoirs, but there's something moving about her use of language that I really respond to.
“Break Your Own Glass Slippers” by Amanda Lovelace
Predominantly in fairytales, the perfect and pretty Princess patiently pauses for the protection of a prompt prince who will pitch platitudes perfunctorily. Yawn. In, “Break Your Own Glass Slipper” Amanda Lovelace stresses the importance of being your own hero/heroine. This is the third book of hers that I have read. I’m extremely picky about poetry. Her voice can be brutally honest at times, covering subjects that are so difficult to talk about that many who experience them hide them in the deepest, darkest part of their psyche. She covers fat phobia, and the focus society has on this unattainable idea of perfection. And she covers the person who makes you feel so small and worthless. Things that are never talked about but are incredibly necessary to shine a light on. This book is important and I highly recommend reading it. Actually I recommend all of her books because in every poem you will find a part of yourself. Five stars.
I love Amanda love laces writing and this book was no exception. She hits right where it hurts but in the best way! Highly recommend
5 IMPORTANT STARS, A GIFT TO HUMANITY - BECAUSE WE ALL DO THIS ALL THE TIME.. Every human in this world should read Amanda's books to be a BETTER human.
CW: suicide, child abuse, sexual abuse, toxic relationships (friendship and romantic), eating disorder, fatphobia, trauma.
Amanda's books are SO SAD but also so beautiful and SO IMPORTANT.
It is SO IMPORTANT to LEARN TO IDENTIFY AND REMEMBER ALL THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF ABUSE girls and women of the world are constantly subjected to by all of is humans.
Physical abuse and discrimination are often easier to identify than other subtler forms of emotional abuse so ingrained in the fabric of our humanity that we don't even realize we are ALL abusers at a certain moment: unrealistic and unfair expectations, double standards, constant judgment, unwanted attention, neglect, shaming, lack of support and empowerment are just a few of them.
TO LEARN HOW MANY OTHER FORMS AND BECOME BETTER HUMANS EVERYONE SHOULD READ AMANDA'S BOOKS.
As a human, woman, mother, sister, friend, wife, I'm SO GRATEFUL Amanda writes this books!
Amanda Lovelace's series just keep getting better and better. The audiobooks are FANTASTIC! I got goosebumps the entire time I was listening to it. Can't recommend them enough!
did not like the audiobook version but I feel that the physical copy would be much better especially with the visuals and all

"You were my almost, but I'm my own forever, long may I reign"
The story is about self-love and hate, toxic relationships, feminism, surviving and living. Poems are woven in fear, pain and overcoming.
Taking inspiration from the Cinderella fairytale, the poetess starts to say stories carved from her childhood and adult life. How she left others to judge her value for so long, how she put their words on a pedestal and let them affect her in every way possible. And then, how she came to realise her value more and more until one day the cacophonies of the past became the most silent echoes in the future. The poetess doesn't disregard her life experiences or choices but rather embraces them, learns from them and creates the strongest shield against a cruel world. She lets her scars shine through and doesn't hide, not only from the others but from herself as well.
The poems are straightforward, the meaning and the message are right there for the readers to see, loud and clear. Personally, I'm more of an "I want to discover the hidden meaning behinds the words" sort of gal, but nonetheless I enjoyed it a lot, especially because the poetess was reading it, which made the whole experience even more personal. Definitely recommend✨
I’ve been meaning to read and Amanda Lovelace book for so long and I was not disappointed. I loved the writing and the overall message of the book. Make sure to look up trigger warning!

These poetry collections are just everything, I like how Amanda points out that subject matter can be difficult and encourages self care. I think everyone can at least feel and resonate with at least one poem. I find them inspiring and soul warming
I was given an audio book copy from NetGalley to review.
Overall this was a fantastic audio book that was very uplifting. The background music added to the atmosphere and led to a more profound explanation while listening. The poems themselves were thought provoking and a little emotional at times. Making for a fantastic and emotional read, perfect for those times when one your just going through the motions of everyday life and are in need of some guidance.
I loved the original series for Lovelace's poetry books, and I am happy to say her new fairytale collection looks like it's setting itself up to be just as glorious. I loved this read from beginning to end, and I will leave this line only:
before you turn another page, try your hardest to forget everything you know about the fairytale you read as a child. in this fairytale, the princess doesn't recklessly leave behind a glass slipper for the not-so-charming prince. in this fairytale, the princess takes a hammer to them, shattering both to pieces
