'Magical History Tour #8: Vikings' by Fabrice Erre with illustrations by Sylvain Savoia is a graphic novel for young readers telling the history of the Vikings.
Annie and Nico like to learn and this time around it's the seafaring, land conquering Vikings. The text separates out fact from fiction and shows that most European descendants have some Viking ancestry.
This is good for middle school readers and is informative and has great art.
I loved this graphic novel. It is a fun way to learn about the viking age. I would recommend this for kids of all ages. This is a fun way to present history, rather than a boring textbook. I also liked the simple timeline and historical figures at the end. I will likely include this graphic novel in my daughter's homeschool curriculum. Recommend!
Why did I know of this comics just now? This is so interesting that I will surely buy when it's out, and buy the previous titles. In the form of big sis who told her little brother about Vikings, who they were and what they do so people knows of them until present. If learning history can be this fun, I won't mind spending time reading these kind of comics,
This was a nice history of the Vikings and I really enjoyed reading it and will continue to read this series
This was freaking awesome! I truly had no idea about Vikings and it was so good to learn about them. I loved the information about “skips” and “knarrs”. I also had no idea they inhabited Iceland (“islandia”). Seriously this was so good and such an accessible way to learn. This should be in every school and library and when my friends kids are older I’m purchasing this series for them. And the illustrations were gorgeous. A 5/5 for sure.
I wanted to love these so badly! I ended up finding them a little slow.. I know there is a market for them and I hope they find their audience!
Continues the strength of this series teaching nonfiction with ease and engagement for younger readers
This story is a graphic novel about the vikings. The book covers mapping, culture, history, mythology, society, and more. At the end of the story there are biographies about a few leaders, information about ships and technology and a timeline. This is the perfect fiction meets non-fiction text for students learning about history and geography from the viking time period.
The funny and inviting pictures and graphic novel text layout makes this book very accessible and appealing. As a grade 3 teacher, I could see this being used in my classroom by students who are interested in vikings and norse mythology. I could also see my colleagues in middle school using this text to support English language learners or students with learning disabilities. Graphic novels are loved by so many students of all ages and I think that this would be a perfect opportunity for a teacher to bring in a text that is accessible to many students without being labeled as "kiddish". I would recommend this book to teachers of students in Gr 2-8 and for families of children interested in the vikings.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book! I look forward to checking out the other books in this series too!
Who are the Vikings? Where did they live? What did they do for a living? Are Vikings only warriors? These are a few answer to those questions plus more. A girl tells a younger boy about Vikings and their history. It’s a great beginning to learning about Vikings. It includes some important Vikings biography which is interesting. There is also a section on ships and navigators, gods and legends, and last but not least a timeline of their history. The nonfiction book is an excellent beginning of Vikings and their history. The illustrator has done a great job. Th writing is perfect for readers from ages 7-12 years old. The author has given enough information that will possibly get the students wanting to find out more about the Vikings. I learned a few things that I didn’t know about them. It’s fun to read while learning about them. I enjoyed reading it.
A cute comic history of The Vikings. I'm excited to read the rest in the Magical History Tour series!
Thank you so much to net galley for sending me a copy of this book! I always love new Viking history books because so many times in media the Viking information is incorrect and it’s frustrating because it’s so fascinating!
Ooo i enjoyed this one, especially given that my future hubs is of viking descent so this made this even more interesting to me.
Given the format, it is a great read for both adults and kids alike.
I cannot help but wonder what the others in the series are like.
A cute, though not particularly deep, history of the Vikings (and other Norse peoples) in graphic novel form. It's much more focused on specific historical events than daily life, but the premise of of a girl (I presume a sister) telling a younger boy about the history adds a cute focus. It's a great place for kids to start!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy for review.
Magical History Tour: Vikings is an educational graphic novel geared towards children. The storyline is easy to follow. It has colorful illustrations along with helpful maps.
The last few pages include some information about important Viking figures and their contributions. There is also a small section about Viking mythology which could be interesting to any Marvel loving kids/adults out there. I like the straightforward timeline at the end as it makes a useful reference.
While this is geared towards children, it does not shy away from the violent aspect of Viking history so that may be something to consider depending on the reader's age.
Thank you to Papercutz and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Magical History Tour #8 by Sylvain Savoia and Fabrice Erre is an educational children's graphic novel that will teach children about the Vikings. The story revolves around two children, who journey to the time of the Vikings to learn about their history. According to the description, the book answers questions like: "Who were the Vikings, those fierce warriors of the north? Were they descendants of Norse gods, complete with formidable horned helmets and long blonde hair? Were they a sea-faring people who were masters at geography and navigation?"
Overall, Magical History Tour #8 would be a great addition to any classroom or curriculum unit involving the Vikings. One highlight is the amazing amount of historical research that the authors did in order to get the details right. The authors even include several pages of text at the end of the graphic novel that explain more about the historical context of the Vikings. As a teacher, I can see practical classroom applications for this graphic novel. The graphic novel and colorful pictures will attract reluctant readers or English Language Learners. If you're intrigued by the description, or if you're a fan of historical graphic novels, I recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in April!
