I enjoyed the first in the series so went for this thinking I would enjoy it also but found it too descriptive to the detriment of the pace of the story, and there were too many characters introduced which made it hard to follow. I appreciated the story the author tried to write but found it too hard going
I am not really sure how to go about writing this review. There really hasn't been a time when I don't know what to write without being mean spirited which is not intended. I have read many books that were part of a series. I've enjoyed them given them good reviews and have even purchased the rest of the series. Not with this one.. A Plot Most Perilous by Genevieve Essig is the second book in the Cassie Gwynne Mystery. I thought since I didn't read the first maybe that is why I couldn't get into this one.
Cassie Gwynne goes to Florida to visit her Aunt Flora because her beloved father has been killed. Cassie cannot face going back home and relive her fathers death. She has been in Florida awhile and gets involved with a play group but a murder has been committed and the future of the production is in jeopardy. Plus no one know who the killer is.
Normally I love these little mysteries, The only character I liked was Cassie. She is a detective without knowing she is. She is more interested in finding out who committed this murder then facing the facts in her own fathers murder. There were many other characters in the book which made it hard to follow. I wished the author would have written more on the relationship of Cassie and her Aunt Flora. Again this could also be that I didn't read the first book. The story was a bit drawn out and I usually like to finish a book satisfied and complete. It just didn't do it for me.
I love the historical era this was written in. The characters needed more to them and not such a long drawn out story.
I am sorry that I wasn't a fan. Though I thank NetGalley for approving me for this ARC copy.
An intriguing story, with very descriptive and evocative writing, although at times I felt it was a trifle ponderous. Cassie’s attraction to Hughes seemed a bit contrived - as if we had accidentally wandered into a different genre. Overall an enjoyable read.
It's an intriguing read, I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline. While there is a primary plot, I enjoyed the many subplots and motives that were behind each one too. I was spot on with many aspects, of the mystery but there were a couple of surprises in store as well!
Once again I found Cassie to be a most likeable leading lady. She's highly relatable being intelligent and curious whilst most unconfident in the romance department, There were parts where I just couldn't stifle a giggle, as the author threw in some lighter. moments. Occasionally, I found some of the detail I bit distracting.
I'm looking forward to seeing just how the family story evolves. I have a sense that with each mystery, we'll learn a little more. Things are definitely not what they seemed to be.
With thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for my advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was drawn to this because of the cover and the description sounded interesting. It’s the second book in a series but the first I have read. I found it quite hard to get into, so many names to begin with made it confusing. Something I never really got to grips with, I felt I was always trying to catch up with something. I’m not familiar with pirates of Penzance so that didn’t hook me in. Overall it wasn’t for me.
This is the second book featuring the amateur sleuth Cassie Gwynne. The first book wasn’t a particularly deep historical cozy mystery, mostly because Cassie didn’t come across as a competent sleuth, but she managed to solve the mystery before any of the professionals. The premise of it wasn’t bad though, so I was interested in reading this second book to see if Cassie grew as a character.
In this one, Cassie is investigating mysterious happens during a musical production done by a traveling theater group. While that leads to some entertaining references to the Pirates of Penzance, the mystery aspect was interesting and I thought the plot was fairly well done with a few surprises. I still had some trouble connecting with Cassie. It’s not that she’s a bad character, she’s actually fun to read about sometimes, but I just wish her personality was developed to make her stand out a little more from the other characters. I did like Esy, her cat.
Overall, a mostly enjoyable book if you have a few hours to read, just not particularly a memorable book that will stay with you for a while.
I grabbed this cozy historical mystery set in the 1880s for the cover and the title. It’s the second in a series with Cassie Gwynne, bookworm, cat lover, reluctant heiress and now amateur sleuth. She gets drawn into a murder involving the cast of the Pirates of Penzance.
I enjoy 19th century murder mysteries so I wanted to like this one, but it never grabbed me. Too many characters were thrown at us in the first chapter. The pets, the kids, the friends, everyone from the play. Every scene was overwritten with far too much minutiae. It might have been trying to be a farce, but I never got on board. I was already skimming pages at the %10 mark.
Fans of the first book might like this one, and Pirates of Penzance fans will probably appreciate the tie ins, but I was not intrigued enough to go back and read the first book. I struggled to finish this one. Cassie isn’t very clever, in fact she’s so naive I had a hard time connecting with her. Maybe that was also because she didn’t stand out amongst every named pet and random friend on the island.
Loved this book. This is a totally charming cozy mystery full of murder, intrigue, and a cast of characters I adored! Definitely a book to read. I was pulled into the story and it did not let go. The book is well written with a strong character driven story and many a twists and turns
Recommended 4 star read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was the latest book in the Cassie Gwynne series. I read through it very quickly, because I enjoyed the book. It resonated with me on a personal level because I know most of the songs' words and many of the lines in 'The Pitates of Penzance' very well. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for giving me a copy of the book, .as I said, I really enjoyed this historical mystery.
