This review is based on an ARC of Stone Broke Heiress which I received courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher (Bookouture).
Madeleine Wickham must have a new pseudonym -- Danielle Owen-Jones! Stone Broke Heiress is a perfectly funny, fluffy, romantic, and right proper British chick-lit novel. The story is enveloping, vibrant, and oh-so-relatable (er, besides the heiress bit).
Chick-lit, romance, etc. are never my go-to genres, but I fell in love with Owen-Jones's story and its' cast of characters. I finished this book in a day and a half, putting down another book to do so -- irresistable!
Admittedly the plot is a wee bit predictable. In terms of mindless entertainment, however, I was beyond satisfied.
I hope that Danielle Owen-Jones has more in store. You know I'll be first in line to read her sophomore novel! Sophie Kinsella fans, look out now!
P.S. Don't think I didn't notice the artsy, free-spirit best friend named Suze.
This book has big Hallmark Christmas movie energy. It’s comforting, makes you laugh, and leaves with you with a warm fuzzy happy feeling at the end. I’d classify it as a PG romantic comedy. It’s appropriate for everyone from your sister to your grandmother and you’re sure to find yourself giggling and smiling throughout.
I received a review copy of Stone Broke Heiress through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. ❤️
This was an amazing gem of a book. I enjoyed it from start to finish and kept laughing out loud throughout the entire thing. 😍😁 I truly recommend reading this, it’s just a pure joy.
Also many plus points for the Killing Eve and Regé Jean Page references. 🥰
Danielle became my immediate read from now on and I can’t wait what else she’ll come up with. 😍
What happens when Bella’s world comes crashing down? She feels like she’s lost everything. Little does she know she’s about to gain a whole lot more….
This is such a cute, feel good story! It had me laughing and smiling a lot! A riches to rags story and a bumpy journey to self discovery. Bella is such a lovable character even though you might question her choices at times. I loved following along with her as she realizes what’s truly important in life and that things don’t always go the way you planned. If you like a light hearted happily ever after story, you will really enjoy this book too!
Thank you so much NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced reader copy.
Fell in love with Bella’s character. Bella does a lot of personal growth in the story which I enjoyed reading about. I knew it would be a delightful tale which it was I throughly enjoyed the characters and the premise and can highly recommend this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I had to admit defeat with this one at the 43% mark. It was a little too fluffy for my tastes and when it went down the cliché rom-com road of introducing quirky, eccentric OAP's (which I cannot stand but it's a big thing lately) and OTT clumsiness then it felt like I was making myself continue reading it without actually enjoying it.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Bookouture and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Bella’s cute, charming and likable. I grew to enjoy her and her story more as I read. I’d read more about her in the future.
A fun and light read, Bella was a character that you could engage with and I would welcome more books featuring her as it’s central character
Bella’s perfect life comes crumbling down in spectacular fashion. Her family business is in turmoil with her dad fired and her leaving to show him her support. Then her personal life also takes a battering. When her family financed high life disappears she ends up in a completely different world from what she is used too. She meets Dan who runs a Soup Kitchen through her new neighbor. He thinks she’s a spoiled princess and she thinks he’s a grump. She has never had to do anything for herself and has a lot to learn. Her family business revolved around soup and it’s the one thing she actually does know. She doesn’t want to tell people in her new world about her old life and this eventually comes back to bite her. Bella and Dan become friends and then more. After Bellla’s new life is crushed (she really doesn’t have a lot of luck) she realises that something is amiss and goes about trying to work out where it all went wrong. Bella was very annoying at the start, but I guess that was the hole point otherwise you wouldn’t see how much she changed. Dan has had a hard life and Bella brings him and those around him a little sunshine in their lives. This is a clean, sweet enjoyable read.
Arabella’s life as she knows it is about to change completely. Once the former heiress to a multi-million pound soup empire, she’s now forced to start over after having lost her job, her fiancé, and the family business. She’s gone from lavish vacations and designer clothing to working at a soup kitchen and cleaning her own flat! Can she start over and stand on her own two feet, or is a life with out lavish amenities too difficult to bear?
This was cute! This riches to rags storyline is used in a lot of movies and I was curious if this was going to be just like all of them. I appreciated that this book set itself apart by adding social conscience and featuring stories of veganism and homelessness. I did also enjoy that this story featured region specific dialect. I obviously didn’t understand it, but it made it evident that the author understood and was familiar with Liverpool. It irritates me when authors write a book set in a place they’re not from or familiar with, and the characters don’t speak like they’re from that place. I found the set up of the story to be a little long, and it felt like it dragged on before anything of importance happened. I really liked Bella, but it took me a long time to warm up to her. She comes across very naïve and stupid beneath her fun and bubbly exterior. She reminds me a little of Jess from “New Girl”. I enjoy Dan and Bella’s relationship and wish the book spent a little more time on it. And while I did like some of the characters, the others were a bit too over the top for my taste. In general, I found the story cute, but it didn’t wow me. A solid 3 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I laughed from the very first line. Great storyline, superb characters in which some were endearing and sweet and others I loved to hate. Some great comic lines thrown in throughout. This author makes writing seem effortless as it was a joy to read. Quick witted, sharp and fun.
Bella's mum is hysterical. I also never thought i'd care so much about soup!
A perfect riches to rags read, and the transformation is perfection.
Rich girl becomes broke. Bella’s world crashes down on her in a matter of days. At first, I didn’t have much sympathy for her, but my attitude changed as I read. She has some pluck, moving to a new location, getting a new job, and finding new friends. But she’s still hiding her real identity from her closest friends. She uncovers some horrible truths about her family’s company and who’s actual,y behind it.
Bella does a lot of personal growth in the story, which I liked, plus shows integrity. I liked the new Bella much better than the shallow person she had been. I also liked the feel good ending, if only life could be tied up so neatly.
