Thank you for this ARC. I have never read anything by this author, so the title was intriguing- what could possibly go wrong! What a rollercoaster of a read, just when you thought how it would end, wrong a brilliant twist. Would thoroughly recommend to others.
This one is definitely a slow burn and while it starts slowly, perhaps a bit too slowly, it is most definitely worth hanging in there for because once it takes off it zooms toward a quite satisfying conclusion.
I definitely recommend.
Thank you to the publisher for gifting me a copy. It was my pleasure to write an honest review.
So I had the case cracked almost immediately but it was still an enjoyable mystery because I was able to concentrate on how the author was setting it up and collect all the clues. There were also some definite curve balls thrown in there that I didn’t see coming and made it more interesting.
The plot of the story I liked….the characters not so much. I found it really hard to connect with the characters and felt like I couldn’t get a grasp on who they were. I did, however, really enjoy the dual POV between Hannah and Zach. They both had different information and goals but one major thing in common: who they cared for. When their paths collide it really shakes up the book.
I felt like the ending was a bit rushed and I wasn’t thrilled with the outcome. Nothing against the writing, I just prefer stories that end with a bit of optimism or at least some hope that things will be okay. I finished the book and honestly just felt a bit deflated.
Thank you NetGalley for the digital ARC! Also Bookouture and the author, Kerry Wilkinson.
This book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, it was filled with mystery and intrigue that just kept me flying through the pages. This is definitely a perfect book to read if looking for a psychological thriller that will keep you guessing till the very end.
“It was only as she turned back that she noticed the whispering flutter of a net curtain in the window of the house next door”
This thriller was amazing !!!!
Secrets, mystery and a friendship that someone would still like to save.
This book gave me so many vibes from the French noir “8 femmes” which I absolutely loved !!!
Twists and turns, one right after the other and a mother ready to do everything to protect her children …
I loved it !! It gave me adrenaline and kept me focused on the plot development until the very last page!!!
“It was inconceivable - and yet, with a simple closing of the door, the finality of it all had been conceived”
The reader feels enhanced in the story and tries to figure out the solution, reaching for the next clue.
And when they think they finally got it … the author shows another line you might have missed.
For every fan of mystery, thrillers, for everyone who loves secrets and what happens when someone tries to cover or unravel them!
“I suppose I try to figure out who killed her”
As a massive fan of thr author, I had such high hopes when I started this and I have to say, I was I no way disappointed!! I love thrillers and mysteries but this is written in such an intelligent way that gives absolutely nothing away until that final big reveal at exactly the right second. The characters were all well written, they had personality and drive and individually and relate ability. It's not these extreme serial killers or loads of gore, its very cleverly, logical set of circumstances that really could happen to anyone should the cards be dealt that way. And how would you react? How would your friends?! It's the uncertainty about what anyone is capable of or how we're all capable of acting should the need arise and it just hooks you from the start. This book completely got under my skin and I couldn't put it down until I knew just what had happened. It keeps up such a good pace without ever feeling rushed or like it's dragging. Every single paragraph is relevant and moves the story along continuously. It's just amazing writing and I'm already desperate for the next book!! RECOMMENDED!!! HIGHLY!!!
4.5 Stars. I really enjoyed this! It was short at only about 304 pages and it needed to be longer. As an almost exclusive mystery/thriller reader, suspension of disbelief is huge in determining how I react to a novel. This one was very believable. Although I've never been involved in a murder, this one unfolded in such a way that it gave the uh-oh feeling...like, what would I have done in this situation? Because I could definitely see parts of this story happening. That is heart-pounding-reading. The lack of the half star is the ending. All of the loose ends were wrapped in one conversation on a stroll around the pond. This was not satisfying at all for me. It served the purpose but lacked imagination, I thought. Overall, I do recommend as a very entertaining, not earth-shattering, read. Thank you to Bookouture/Netgalley for the advanced copy! I look forward to more novels from Wilkinson.
Hannah is about to go away travelling, but family decide a farewell party would be a good idea. Family and friends arrive at number 12 and not everyone is pleased to see one friend in particular. The evening is fractious and one of the party ends up dead and the rest of the party decide it’s best to deal with this situation theirselves. Which inevitably comes back to be something they regret.
A compulsive psychological thriller which keeps you turning the pages and guessing right until the end. Loved it, like many of Kerry Wilkinson’s other books, you will not be disappointed.
Another outstanding psychological thriller by Kerry Wilkinson.
Hannah Ford’s grandmother has recently passed away and she left a good sum of money to her three granddaughters. Hannah is planning to spend hers on a trip around the world, but before she goes, she’s having a big send-off party. Eight women are invited to the party, including Hannah’s two sisters, her mother, several childhood friends, and a mother of the friend. During the party, there is an accident. In the morning, someone winds up dead.
From there, things get very interesting. Everyone in the group has a reason to fear going to the police, or someone else in the group they are willing to protect. And so they decide to do the unthinkable. Surely no one will come looking for the person who died?
This was such an addictive read, I couldn’t put it down. You have the eight people who were at the party who are now frantically trying to cover up what they’ve done. Someone who knows the deceased is trying to uncover the truth. Added twists in the second half of the book make this a fantastic read from start to finish. I am a big fan of Kerry Wilkinson and have read most of his standalones and many of his Jessica Daniels books and this is one of his best books to date. A really well-crafted mystery.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book from Bookouture and NetGalley for review purposes.
Another great book from this author . Was very intriguing from the start and plenty of story to keep you up at night . Was hard to tell which direction the story was going to go and I was completely gobsmacked with the ending . I loved all the characters in the family , they worked together very well . This is definitely a 5 star from me , I can’t wait for the next
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. I felt this book was way too slow in the beginning and kind of choppy throughout. The plot of "deadly dinner party" is way too overdone these days. Too much of this book was slow; I ended up skimming more than anything. I had issues with Kerry's last book as well. I hope the next one is better. Not one I would recommend.
Eight women enter a house on a Saturday, but only seven will be alive on Sunday morning. Hey, you just got my undivided attention!
A rapid and enjoyable read, that is IF you are willing to suspend all disbelief. Ow dear, ow dear, there is not one of those seven that behaves logically or with any sense of maturity or responsibility. Of course, there would be no mystery if someone called the police right away. So I'm sorry, but you will have to accept that people will do very strange things when under stress to get past that point. Then you get to the end, and I found it very unlikely that the culprit would murder for this particular reason. But then again, people have killed for less, I'm sure.
But then the plot is quite good actually. It is well paced and the different pov's make it interesting. What I didn't like, and why it only got 2,5 - 3 stars is the very clinical writing. No long winding beautiful sentences, but just what you need to know to get further in the story. For example the city where it all takes place stays an anonymous town, with roads, shops and traffic signs; nothing to carve a soul into the streets and the buildings that forms it. And it is the same with the characters: you will know all you need to know to get the plot along, nothing more.
If you crave a quick whodunnit then this is just right for you. If you expect some literary fiction with a mystery twist, then give it a pass.
The Party at Number 12 is a mystery/thriller focusing on a going-away party gone wrong. One of the guests is discovered dead under mysterious circumstances. The story follows Hannah, whose party it was, and the aftermath of the death. I had figured out the big reveal early on in the book, which definitely took away from the ending. I couldn't really connect with any of the characters, and their reactions to the death were not believable. Finally, I didn't think there was enough character development to understand everyone's reasoning and choices. It was a 2.5 star read for me.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Bookouture and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Descriptive, intriguing picks up the pace after a bit. Twists and thrilling turns.
A going away party gone wrong. Hannah hosts an overnight party with her close family and friends for one last get together before she goes traveling. She expected a night of drinking and playing games with her family and oldest friends, she didn’t anticipate that come morning, one of her guests would be dead.
I found this book hard to rate. It starts off rough, I almost didn’t want to keep reading it, but eventually it picked up to where I didn’t want to put it down. Probably a 3.5/5 star read for me.
The characters aren’t very realistic. None of them act how you would expect family/friends to act when they wake up to find someone they know dead.
It’s one of those stories where everyone has a secret to hide and you don’t feel like you can trust anyone’s point of view.
I liked that the story had a bunch of twists to it, even if some seemed a little out there. There was a moment where I thought the ending would turn out the way it did, but, through the various plot twists I ended up dropping that theory and was surprised when the ending was revealed. It kept me guessing and I love when authors achieve that.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I really liked the idea of this book and the whole setting was quite interesting. This author can write but I found this book was very descriptive at the start and it doesn’t apples up to the end. Took a while for me to red and I pushed on. I’m a bit in the fence.
I so wanted to like The Party at Number 12. The synopsis sounded so good and had me intrigued. However, there were too many extraneous details that were not needed that pulled me away from the scenes' action. For example, one character witnesses an altercation, then that character talks about a fight when he was younger—this did not add anything to the story and broke up the action of the actual scene.
The reason for the murder seemed rather silly and contrived. But here were good red herrings that did keep me guessing.

First off, the pacing was terrible. Second, the author spent sooooooooo much time in the beginning of the book describing the sleeping arrangements and layout of the house that it was a dead giveaway one of the twists was going to involve one of the characters being mistaken for the MC due to a botched sleeping arrangement. Third, the characters were all awful, didn’t like any of them, hardly any personality and when they all discovered a dead body their reactions were, “….damn…that’s wild….so anyway”. Fourth, I am aware this is an ARC but the dialogue was so clunky at parts and made NO sense who was speaking to who. Again might be draft errors but there were multiple times I had to reread a passage to even understand which characters were interacting. Five, the reason for the murder was so freaking dumb. As I guessed earlier it was the youngest sister that accidentally killed a character thinking it was the MC…and for what you ask? She was mad that the MC was using inheritance money to travel. Yes. That’s the reason. Mind you, the sister was also getting an inheritance sooooo just why?
Six. I thought this was going to be a locked room mystery type, hence the title but it was a few pages of a lame ass get together and that was the end of it. The rest of the book was just the characters meeting at coffee shops or apartments to discuss the crime. I honestly started to skim after a while.
I enjoyed this book, it was well written with a good narrative, good character development and a well developed storyline that was full of suspense, twists and unpredictability. A really good read.
I enjoyed this read! A suspenseful thriller with a couple of twists I did not see coming. Lots of twists and turns but the premise felt a little lacking. Some of the characters acted in ways that felt a bit hard to believe but setting that aside this was a very entertaining read.
