Elysium Tide is a fast-paced exciting suspense by author James R. Hannibal.
Workaholic neurosurgeon Peter Chesterfield has been sent to a medical conference in Maui after a surgery that didn't go as planned. His forced vacation quickly turns deadly when he discovers a badly injured young woman floating in the waves near the resort. Peter soon finds himself up to his neck in sabotage, crime, and even murder as he becomes an unofficial consultant to island native, Dectective Lisa Kealoha. Together they learn that this crime ring is deeper and far more twisted than anyone could have imagined, and they will have to work quickly if they want to stay alive.
I enjoyed the plot and characters in this novel. The story remained mostly realistic and was easy to picture. The twists and turns kept me glued to the pages and I was completely surprised by the ending. Faith was strong throughout the book, and the author painted a beautiful picture of the necessity of having the assurance of salvation and sharing our faith with those around us. Although this wasn't my favourite of Hannibal's novels, it was still an enjoyable read.
I'd give Elysium Tide 4/5 stars and recommend it for those who enjoy faith-based suspense with little romance.

Dr. Peter Chesterfield may have been sent to Hawaii on the outs from his London hospital, but he proves himself invaluable in the midst of crime investigations on the island, which turns out to be no paradise for those involved. The intriguing story appealed to my inquisitive mind—it had a different setup than many mysteries. The fast-paced plot and realistic characters brought life to the exciting tale. The author did a great job weaving all the elements into a compelling suspense novel. I received a copy from the publisher through Netgalley. All opinions are my own. #ElysiumTide #NetGalley
After reading the blurb of Elysium Tide by James Hannibal, I thought this story sounded like something I would really like, sadly, I struggled with this one. The writing seemed a bit choppy to me and some parts seemed a little confusing. I also had a hard time connecting with Peter and Lisa, especially Peter. I was hoping once he got to Maui, I would connect more with him and the story, but I never really did. I know I am in the minority on this one though.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I also purchased a copy. All opinions are my own.
James Hannibal has firmly established himself in my must-read list and Elysium Tide is the latest addition to the collection. Dr. Peter Chesterfield, senior attending neurosurgeon at Royal London Hospital, is plummeting toward burnout and a forced vacation is just what the chief medical officer ordered. Detective Lisa Kealoha has worked hard to overcome the circumstances of her youth and return home from L.A. to head up the gang task force for the Maui Criminal Investigative Division. Things are already getting hot on the island when the two collide after Peter tries to save the life of Lisa’s friend, and then continue to collide through the course of her investigation into Kelly’s murder and a host of other criminal activity surrounding it. Peter has his own investigation to conduct after he fails to save the woman he found floating in the surf outside his luxury hotel, and he will conduct that investigation with or without Lisa’s help.
Sabotage and auto theft, murder and intrigue keep the plot flying like a modified Mustang over hidden smuggler’s tracks toward a satisfying conclusion. Written with great still to keep the reader engaged until the very end, Hannibal has delivered yet another gloriously successful action novel, further solidifying his must-read status.
Thank you to the author and publisher for allowing me a copy to read and review. All opinions expressed here are my own and are completely genuine.
Elysium Tide by James R Hannibal is an exciting contemporary crime suspense that captured my attention from the start.
The main setting in Maui is very exotic and in complete contrast to a grey London. An ex-army vet and surgeon is sent to Maui for some r and r. It proves anything but as he is soon embroiled in the hunt to catch a killer, along with the local police lady. They make a dynamic duo after originally locking swords.
Elysium Tide is a fast-paced suspense with an intricately, well thought out and well executed plotline. The reader turns this way and that, trying to join the dots.
The community is close knit, meaning that growing up, the future law enforcement officers and the future criminals grew up side by side. They just made different life choices and must face the consequences.
All the characters were well drawn and realistic. There were some wonderful verbal exchanges between characters.
Elysium Tide was an exciting read. It would make a marvellous Netflix mini-series.

While I didn’t love Elysium Tide as much as I did the first book, I read by James R Hannibal but I did enjoy this one I loved the Hawaiian setting. And the partnership between a doctor and detective though reluctant. It was a neat twist to the how suspense novel.
Plus, the banter between Peter Chesterfield the doctor and Detective Lisa Kealoha was prefect and only added to the story. The mystery and the suspense as well as the pace of the story kept me turning pages. I would have finished it in one night if I didn’t need sleep.
Can’t wait to pick up the next one by James R. Hannibal.

Free Fall by Nancy Mehl once again demonstrates how she is still a master storyteller. Characters that you absolutely fall in love with and cheer for a happy ending.
Alex and Logan are behavioral analyst for the FBI. Logan has just returned from some extensive training. And being away did make his heart grow fonder for Alex. She is still dealing with some emotional baggage. Goodness sakes who would not drop everything to be with a character like Logan!! My only complaint :).
The time jumps here strategically placed to provide the most suspense. well done Nancy. As they are working the missing case for the missing woman they realize there are more missing women out there. We get a picture into what is happening but your are still left guessing as to who is in charge and why.
I am sad to see this series end as I always am with Nancy’s books. She creates characters that you want to see more of. I would recommend this book and the entire series. You will get so much more out of the character development if you read the entire series.

I totally enjoyed this suspense novel by author James R. Hannibal. While it began with a rather gruesome scene in an operating theater in London, England, the story quickly moved to the beautiful island of Maui. This is where neurosurgeon Dr. Peter Chesterfield meets Detective Lisa Kealoha, head of the Maui Investigative Service Bureau's Criminal Investigative Division's Gang Task Force. Together they work to solve a case of murder in which Lisa's long-time friend, Kelly Alana, is the victim. Additional cases spring up from this one, adding to the danger and to the suspense.
This book is fast-paced with lots of unexpected twists. It keeps the reader on his or her toes and glued to the book. The theme of needing to make a choice now of where one plans to spend eternity is an important one, as is the importance of sharing one's faith while there is still time. I am very grateful to have received a complimentary copy of Elysium Tide from Revell via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.
A neurosurgeon from London and a police detective from Maui. What an odd combination. But it works in Elysian Tide!
Fast-paced and intense, with lots of twists and turns, interesting characters, drama, excitement, with just a little humor thrown in…all combine to make Elysium Tide a very satisfying read.

I am reviewing a copy of Elysium Tide through Revell and Netgalley: Dr. Peter Chesterfield is one of the Royal London Hospital's top neurosurgeons, he also happens to be a workaholic. He is ordered by his boss to take a week off to attend a medical symposium at the luxurious Elysium Grand on the island of Maui. While he is there Peter pulls a woman with a skull fracture from the water. Though he is able to revive her briefly, she dies in his arms.
Peter becomes entangled in an ongoing investigation of a brazen luxury auto theft, as he becomes increasingly obsessed with discovering the cause of his patient's death. He also quickly becomes an irritation to detective Lisa Kealoha, who has jurisdiction over the case. But when the two join forces, they begin to uncover a destructive plot that runs far deeper than either of them could have imagined. If they aren’t careful they maybe the next victims of this plot.
I give Elysium Tide five out of five stars!
Happy Reading!
An action packed suspense story set in beautiful Maui. Full of twists, turns, and many moving parts to keep the reader’s attention.
I did feel a little let down at the end of the book as there were a couple of facets to the story that I would have liked to have had closure. Many they will lead into additional books in the future.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are completely my own.
Peter's boss sends him to Hawaii for a conference after the workaholic neurosurgeon gets himself in trouble by not knowing how to keep his mouth shut. He's lived his life feeling that he can control life and death, but when a woman he saves from drowning succumbs to other injuries before he can help her, his feeling of control is shaken. In response, he throws himself into the attempt to find her killer - which brings him into collision with the investigating detective, Lisa. But there is more behind the murder than either of them can imagine. Will they be able to solve the mystery before anyone else - or either of them - is killed? And will this experience break Peter's confidence altogether, or turn him toward the one who is truly in control of life and death?
This was the first book I've read by the author, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm glad I gave it a try. Peter's arrogance (however well founded it might be) did get on my nerves a bit at times, but as he grew because of what he went through, I really came to care for him and to be glad as he started to find his way to more sensible attitudes. The mystery/suspense side was done well - not constantly jumping from one crisis to another, but well-paced and giving time for character development, while still keeping things moving. It was also a good mix of predictable and unexpected twists (I guessed who the top bad guy was but not lots of the details, for example). All in all, a good read and I hope to see more of Peter and Lisa in future! Recommended.
Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
“A while back, some Swiss scientists predicted ultra-hard carbon might be found on Maui. They called it Elysium.”
“Physician, diagnose thyself.”
“What if death is not the end of the road, but a fork? And what if one must choose which path to take without seeing beyond that fork?…I’ve defined myself by knowledge. I know the results of every decision before I make it. But if death is a threshold beyond which I cannot see, I find myself paralyzed.”
What an amazing book! This was my first book by James R. Hannibal and it certainly will not be my last! There needs me more Christian books like this out there. Suspense, humor, action, Christian themes, and no mushy romance. Hannibal has created what is hopefully not a stand alone novel with two equally great main characters: Dr. Peter Chesterfield and Detective Lisa Kealoha. And I loved the Tuna and Mike characters. They were very well developed and who wouldn’t love a Maui setting. This one had some great twists that I did not see coming. I can definitely recommend this book. It is that good.
I received this book free from Netgalley and publisher Revell in exchange for an honest review.
James R. Hannibal is an author who has been a bit hit and miss for me. His talent is undeniable in any of his books, but there have been some in the past that I've read and while the writing was good, I just found I didn't connect with the story as much as I'd have liked. Likewise, there have been some I have truly enjoyed. Elysium Tide was by far a hit for me... and in fact might just be my favorite by this author so far.
Admittedly, it did take me a little bit to get into this story in the beginning, but I must say I think that was more on my personal state of mind (I was horribly sick at the time I started) than anything else.... because it does start with a bang and only keeps building from there. By the end, I absolutely couldn't put it down and really wasn't ready for the story to end. A lot of that certainly had to do with the characters... they were so unique and I loved that they weren't perfect, and made mistakes in the case throughout... something about that just added a level of authenticity to the story that I appreciated. They were quirky and enjoyable to read about... and with just a bit of romance tossed in too for those of us who enjoy that sort of thing.
Overall, I thought this was a very good read. Fans of Christian suspense are sure to want to check this one out.
**I received a complimentary copy for consideration. All thoughts are my own.
James Hannibal's writing just gets better and better. I think I've read all of his previous books and after each one I've said it's my favorite. Well guess what . . . this is now my favorite! Mr. Hannibal has a writing style that is similar to some of my favorite classical mystery writers. The plots are complex and the characters are engaging.
In this story I became completely enamored by the two doctors, Dr. Peter Chesterfield and Dr. Tua Iona. Dr. Chesterfield is a prominent neurosurgeon and Dr. Iona appears to be a simple resort doctor. But Dr. Iona has a wealth of knowledge to pass on that Dr. Chesterfield doesn't even know he needs.
The suspense/mystery aspect of the story involves detective Lisa Kealoha. She's a native to the island and has a lot to prove. Her past is a bit checkered and she's determined to redeem that. A particular gang has infiltrated the island and Lisa is determined to get to the bottom of it and eradicate their presence.
By total happenstance Dr. Chesterfield becomes involved in detective Kealoha's investigation. She's not happy with the situation. But Dr. Chesterfield is trained to notice what it out of place and his insights are valuable, but annoying.
The untwisting of the complex plot was fascinating and if the ending is any indication there will be other books with these characters. I'm very excited about that. This particular mystery is solved but others are left dangling, drawing us to the next book. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with a dash of suspense.
I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.
This book reminded me a little of the shows "House" and "Death in Paradise." Neurosurgeon Peter Chesterfield keeps getting himself in trouble with his caustic comments. When he's sent to Hawaii, he finds himself embroiled in a mystery. While he and Detective Kealoha butt heads, they come to appreciate the other's strengths.
I enjoyed this murder mystery. There was a lot of action. I thought Lisa and Peter had great chemistry. It'll be interesting to watch things play out between them. I liked how Tuna kept inserting himself and Peter into the middle of things. There were some light-hearted moments to counteract the urgency of the mystery. It was a great read.
Thank you to Revell for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was a very entertaining, action-filled story.
The suspense and action was fast paced, with explosive events at just the right moment to shock this reader and make me want to read the next chapter, after each chapter!
Peter was such a great character. I loved his different personality and how this Brit cause for a few lighter, lol moments by saying the first thing that pops into his mouth.
If you enjoy suspense stories which is fast paced and makes you not want to put the book down, I recommend this book.
Elysium Tide is a contemporary thriller written by James R. Hannibal.
Summary: Dr. Peter Chesterfield has been sent by his boss on a mandatory vacation to a conference in Hawaii.
He’s supposed to unwind and decompress from his workaholic tendencies.
But when he finds a body on the beach, he becomes embroiled in a mystery so dangerous, it will change his life forever.
My Thoughts: This book was good. It was more of a one-time read for me, but I thought the author did a great job with the dynamics between the characters, creating a mystery that was riveting, and providing tons of action along the way.
I would like to thank Revell for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my review. Thank you.
** “I got lost in what-ifs. But with help, I learned to let go of the illusion that I was in control. … I had to acknowledge that someone else is in charge, and give it all to Him.” **
James R. Hannibal delivers another incredible suspense thriller with “Elysium Tide.”
When British neurosurgeon Peter Chesterfield is sent to a medical conference in Maui after a work incident gets him reprimanded, he quickly finds himself drawn into a series of criminal events on the beautiful island.
After a series of explosions, car chases, near-fatal accidents and homicides, he meets local detective Lisa Kealoha, offering his unique talents. Can the two safely work together to solve all the mysterious events occurring on Maui?
Hannibal creates an intense plots filled with enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing until the very end. His characters are equally delightful and slimy, and he offers many heart-thumping situations.
He also fills “Elysium Tide” with several great themes, like relinquishing control; contemplating the path death takes us to, and which fork to choose in that path; and what’s beyond that fork at the end of life’s road.
Fans of authors like Irene Hannon, Lynette Eason and Terri Blackstock will love this book.
Five stars out of five.

Dr. Peter Chesterfield is a top neurosurgeon at the Royal London Hospital and a workaholic. Ordered to take some time away from the hospital for a conference in Maui, Peter stumbles upon a murder and becomes involved in Detective Lisa Kealoha's murder investigation. When Peter and Lisa join forces, they uncover a plot that is larger and more sinister than they imagined.
We enjoy a great suspense novel and this was our first read of James R. Hannibal. The bulk of the story had good twists and a surprising villain, which is always a good sign if you aren't able to determine the culprit too far into the book. However, the ending was somewhat of a disappointment with an unnecessary detour and a lack of romantic completion between the two main characters. The conclusion indicates a probable sequel and continued partnership, but a step forward would have provided a more enjoyable stopping point.
