I enjoyed this story of a House like doctor who gets put sent on a mandatory vacation when he crosses a line while performing surgery. Going to Hawaii for an all expense paid work trip would be a dream for most of us, but it winds up being uncomfortable for Peter as it exposes some things that he would have rather ignored. When a young woman dies in his arms, he gets pulls into the investigation (though, perhaps inserts himself would be a better way to describe what goes down!) that will question all he thought about life and his role as a doctor.
While I think I prefer the fast pace of James R. Hannibal's spy novels, I enjoyed this mystery that throws several curve balls. While Lisa is a likeable character, Peter is a bit of a self centered curmudgeon. I loved his personal journey though.

This is a wonderful mystery to pick up and enjoy, full of surprises!

I received this book from Revell. This is my honest review.

A mystery with romance set on the Hawaiian island if Maui? Sign me up!

The characters Lisa and Peter quickly had me invested.

I just love a good mystery and this one was just so good. Had me continually second guess myself until the very end

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting me a copy of this book in return for my honest opinion.

I have yet to meet a James Hannibal story I haven’t loved and Elysium Tide is no exception.

The story started with a gripping medical scene and then rolled over to compelling events in Hawaii. Then, boom, the race is on to find a killer. Firstly, as ever, this novel is hallmarked by Hannibal’s meticulous research. After I visited Maui several years ago, and above all, this squarely felt like I was back on the island.

The plot is a tightly woven and intricate, involving a series of murders with only a tenuous link. Overlapping the violence seems to be an illegal mining operation set up in disused sugar cane fields. The action is spread between an idyllic hotel, the beach, an offshore boat and a sketchy storage yard. And then there’s the LA street gang looped in to the action.

The banter-fueled relationship between Dr Chesterfield and Detective Lisa Kealoha provides a refreshing boost after grisly death abounds. For instance, their regular battles of wit lifts the story to a new level and I’m hoping that the ending (which I didn’t see coming) is a sign that there are more mysteries for Peter and Lisa to solve together. This is a crime-fighting duo that’ll bring some much needed joy to readers.

Definitely recommended to anyone who loves a good murder mystery.

I received a copy from NetGalley. The opinions are all mine.

5 stars for this fantastic book! It will have you reaching for it every chance you get!

Famous British neurosurgeon Peter Chesterfield is in Maui on a mandatory vacation when he discovers a fatally injured woman in the edge of the tide.
Though he's out of his medical jurisdiction, he tries his best to save her but fails. When her death appears to be the result of foul play, he desperately sets out to find her killer.

Maui P.D. Detective Lisa Kealoha grew up babysitting the young woman found on the beach, and is also hot on the trail of the culprit despite a fierce and feisty rival cop on the force. Is this crime the work of a local gang, or a criminal new to her island home?

Kudos to James Hannibal on his newest book! In Elysium Tide, he delivers even more of the intense action, mysterious puzzles, wild chases and thrills all his fans (myself included) LOVE!!

I received a paperback copy of this book to review free from the author and publisher (courtesy of Interviews and Reviews). Thank you also to Netgalley for an e-book copy of this book, which I requested and read because my paperback copy was much later in coming than usual. A positive review was not required, and the thoughts above are my own.

"Elysium Tide" is a mystery/suspense novel. Lisa is a good detective, finding leads and following up on them. She knows the people and the island. Peter is Sherlock-Holmes-type brilliant and isn't afraid to order others around--which doesn't make him friends even though his ideas are good ones. He notices details and draws accurate conclusions not immediately obvious to others. Often, both Lisa and Peter would come to the same location or conclusion though they got there by different deductive routes.

There were several crimes that were committed that needed to be solved. It wasn't initially clear if they were connected and, if so, how. It was an interesting mystery and filled with fights, car chases, and medical emergencies. I loved the character relationship dynamics between, well, everyone. Even the bad guys were interesting, realistic characters. Lisa's team had fun (though professional) interactions. I hope this is intended to be a series as the author set it up to include the possibility of future cases worked together.

Lisa believed in God, and she'd came to view him as a father after her own father died. Peter felt that belief in gods was primitive and misguided, but an intense near-death experience made him question that conclusion. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd highly recommend this well-written and enjoyable novel.

I so enjoyed Elysium Tide. It was clever how Hannibal used an overworked English neurosurgeon who lands in Maui at a medical conference only to become an amateur sleuth in investigating a murder. This one criminal episode morphs into something much bigger involving wealthy businessmen and gang leaders.

Dr Peter Chesterfield is the classic super smart and egocentric neurosurgeon. When it comes to solving problems and healing patients he's best of breed. You want this Dr to be the one who is going to open up your head. But he's become too self-absorbed and rude to members of his operating team. He needs a break, to recharge and self-examine his bedside manner.

Lisa Kealoha has recently relocated from the mainland to head up the Gang Unit in Maui. She;'s a good detective. She's got lots of history in Maui as it was her home until she left for the mainland to train to be a cop. She knows the people, the customs and the families. She also ran with a bad crowd as a teenager and knows how criminals think.

Lisa and Peter become a oddball team. She doesn't want him interfering but he can't help himself, especially when he becomes the key witness in a murder at the hotel he's staying in.

With many twists and turns, Hannibal constructs a tremendous crime story where it's not always easy to see who are the bad guys and who committed what crime. We're kept on our toes as Lisa and Peter go deeper into the heartland of Maui chasing the activities of two nefarious characters new to the island.

Lisa and Peter are strong characters. There's professional chemistry between them which I appreciated. They worked well together. Peter is also given much to think about as he's faced with some extremely dangerous situations. I liked Hannibal's gentle reflections through Lisa and her family on faith and how God works in one's life.

I wonder if there's another story for the two of them. Perhaps separately or together. It would be fun.

I was very fortunate to receive an early ebook copy from Revell via NetGalley as part of their Readers Program. This had no influence on my review.

It took me about a quarter of the book to get really involved in it and once I hit that point, I was hooked.

Dr. Chesterfield has such an interesting mind. It was fascinating to me how he worked the case. Lisa was a great detective who stayed in her lane and was a great character.

Thanks so much to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.

A bit of a slow start, but when the story picks up speed, readers better be buckled up because it goes into overdrive!

Dr. Peter Chesterfield needs a break. He doesn’t want to take a break, but he is ordered by his boss to attend a medical symposium in Hawaii at the Elysium Grand hotel. Even while he is supposed to be on vacation, he ends up working when he pulls a woman from the water with a head injury. She ends up dying in his arms but whispers the word “hono” before dying. After her death, Peter teams up with local detective, Lisa Kealoha, to uncover the missing pieces to the case. Things take a turn for the unexpected the further into the case they go, and it isn’t long before they wind up in the crosshairs of some very dangerous men. Together they must try and solve the case before anyone else gets hurt, or worse.

Let me start with a confession, it took me over two weeks to read this book. Not because it wasn’t good, I just started it at a very busy time with lots going on and didn’t have much time to read. When I did read, I didn’t want to stop to do the other things I had to do. The story started a little slow but once it got going in really picked up the pace and held my interest the rest of the time. Peter and Lisa were great main characters, a little rough around the edges at times but had some great character growth and their dynamic when with each other was very well done. This was the second book in a row set in Hawaii I read by coincidence and this was by far the better of the two. I loved the beautiful setting, fast paced storyline, and fun characters. Even though it could have gone deeper into the Elysium aspect, I feel Hannibal did a great job with not going too far and losing the reader. My advice would be to pick this book up when you have plenty of time to devote to the story without interruptions. I recommend this book to readers that enjoy suspense, action and an overall great read.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.

Hannibal takes the first part of the novel to set the stage. The neurosurgeon in London and the detective in Hawaii have lives seemingly unrelated. When the doctor is forced to take a break in Hawaii, the lives intersect and the novel takes off.

This is a good police procedure mystery with a twist in that it includes an amateur sleuth pretty much with equal status in solving the murder. Peter's character development was interesting. He starts out as a cocky and over assured neurosurgeon. His experiences in Hawaii changes him in good ways. Lisa is a good detective character. She is so tenacious it gets her in trouble. The two work well together, after a few tense moments. Peter brings a new perspective to investigative work as he sees and processes information differently than trained officers.

The plot is interesting in that a new gang is infiltrating the island. There are other nefarious things going on too. Hannibal developed one of the villains such that the person was easily identified early on. Other than that, a good combination of police procedure and amateur sleuth in a tropical setting.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Another great release from James R. Hannibal!

Readers are treated to the beaches of Hawaii in this suspenseful read. Gang violence is interrupting the quiet life of those living on Maui, and detective Lisa Kealoha isn’t about to let them take over her island. Having been redeemed from a similar youth, Lisa is determined to stop the violence and help her friends leave a life of crime.

Dr. Peter Chesterfield is a workaholic sent to Hawaii to attend a medical conference as penance for calling out another colleague in front of an observing crowd (during a procedure in the teaching hospital in London). Arrogant, intelligent and possessing no verbal filter, Peter creates tension wherever he goes.

I love these two characters who end up joining forces since Peter discovers a dying woman on the beach (and works tirelessly to try to save her), who happens to be a close friend of Lisa’s. Peter is annoying to those who know him, but he proves over and over again to be an asset that Lisa can’t do without. His background is interesting adding to his ability to help Lisa stop the destruction and infiltrate the syndicate that is causing violence in Hawaii.

I especially appreciated the spiritual thread that is woven through the entire book. Peter is an atheist and an academic, relying on his knowledge and science which dictates how he lives. Lisa (and another character who is a strong secondary character) are Bible-believing Christians who live out their faith. The conversations are organic and not preachy. It’s fascinating to watch Peter’s journey unfold, and the kinds of questions he wrestles with.

The setting is beautiful and one can totally envision where Lisa and Peter are with the vivid descriptions the author gives.

It’s an intriguing story and one that will keep readers engaged from page one. There are plenty of action scenes, plenty of secrets, and plenty of intense moments peppering the pages.

I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.

Elysium Tide by James R. Hannibal is the kind of book you’ll want to pack for your summer vacation. The story is set in Hawaii and gives readers a great mystery with a tropical backdrop. Dr. Peter Chesterfield, renowned British neurosurgeon gets exiled to a conference in Hawaii. He gets mixed up with police detective Lisa Kealoha’s case. She’s investigating a series of car thefts but discovers something much more sinister going down on the island. And Peter finds out that he makes a pretty good amateur sleuth.

This story is a bit different from other novels by James R. Hannibal, but I enjoyed it. It’s missing some of the intense action and suspense from some of his other stories, and Elysium Tide is more character driven. Peter is quirky, abrasive, but yet lovable. And Lisa is intense, but readers get to know her and her family. Readers will enjoy following Lisa and Peter as they try to take down a gang leader, along with their sidekick Tuna. But the story does have plenty of suspenseful moments. I just hope this is a series because I’d love to see Peter and Lisa to team up and solve more crimes.

Definitely add this to your TBR list this summer and enjoy a great mystery!

Dr. Peter Chesterfield is a top neurosurgeon at Royal London Hospital. After an verbal incident with a student in surgery, his boss sends him to a medical symposium in Maui to get him away from the hospital. He believes Peter has become a workaholic and needs a break. While there, Peter discovers a woman with a scull fracture in the water and isn’t able to save her. She says the word honu to him before she passes away.

Detective Lisa Kealoha is investigating the case. She’s from the island and recently returned to serve on their police force after living in California for a few years. The dead woman was someone close to her family as a child and Lisa is determined to find her killer.

Peter teams up with Lisa as a consultant when he won’t stay away from the case. The two soon discover there is a big operation afoot on the island. The people involved are closer to Lisa than she realizes. Will they solve the case?

This is my first book by this author. I really loved the story. The characters worked well together and I liked the Christian influence. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

I very much enjoyed this book. It was well written with well crafted characters. It was not formulaic and held my attention through till the end.

This was an interesting story set in Maui. The author stays true to island lingo and religious beliefs.
A London Dr, taking a forced vacation, finds himself in the middle of a criminal investigation.
There are the normal twists and turns as the local police department deal with murders, car theft, and more.

In Elysium Tide readers will travel to Hawaii and a crime that seems to start small and then spirals into a many headed Medusa that seems impossible to kill…or solve. Filled with twists, turns, and characters that kept the pages turning, the book felt like a vacation and a jolt of adrenaline at the same time. Be prepared to read this book in one sitting. Elysium Tide is perfect for readers who love a novel filled with mystery, twists, and the lightest hint of romance.

Excellent mystery that gains strength from its multidimensional characters. A real island adventure that starts in England and moves to Hawaii. Takes some time to figure out, but in the meantime, enjoy the relationship between the main characters.

Elysium Tide by James R. Hannibal features a mystery on the Hawaiian islands with a doctor and a detective. With the doctor from London, it was definitely a unique take to a character's background. The story starts in an operating room, not with a dead body, which had a unique twist to starting a mystery novel. As soon as the story moves to Hawaii from London, the suspense element jumped into full force. A dead body or two. Mishaps. Car chases. Among other things that kept the mystery element moving through the story. While I do enjoy these type of things in the my suspense stories, I wanted more. Plenty of dry moments where nothing was happening. A lot of getting to know one another. I felt like the plot was boring and needed more action. Really did not capture my attention the way I like a mystery novel to do. Even with this element to the plot, a big transformation moment occurs to Peter, the doctor, and those are the moments I enjoy seeing in novels. Overall, Elysium Tide by James R. Hannibal was an okay mystery, but it really did not have enough action for me. I wanted more to the plot.
