This was a quick domestic thriller that kept me guessing on a couple things till the end. I was also interested in seeing how all the various threads would come together.
However Emma's and Tom's actions were sometimes hard to understand. The reader was also left with unanswered questions. But I did finish it in a day.
Thank you to the publisher for my e-copy of this book.
I enjoyed this book! It has a dual timeline with one point of view but it is easy to follow! It's an entertaining story! I'm looking forward to more from Kate White!
This book somehow got left on my shelf, until yesterday when I noticed the author, and have since read other books by her. Decided I needed to read this one. A good domestic thriller, not her best, but I enjoyed it. I wish the ending was not quite so hurried.
What an amazing novel!
Kate White is a fabulous writer and I always look forward to her next work. I highly recommend The Second Husband!
This was my first book by Kate White but won’t be the last! It was a fast pace and exciting read. I love trying to figure out “who done it” and I was not expecting the twist in this book! Well done!
Thank you to NETGALLEY for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Well, I read this book in August 2022 (nearly a year ago) and only wrote a couple-sentence blurb of a review, intending to come back and add more:
"I enjoyed this domestic thriller by Kate White. It was a quick, suspenseful read, although it ended somewhat abruptly. I would have liked to read a bit more about the aftermath. Not my favorite Kate White, but I love her writing in general and look forward to her next book."
Obviously I failed to do so, and I don't remember enough about the book at this point to add anything to that! Apologies for this fairly useless review.
Kate White did a fantastic job at making almost EVERYONE suspicious in this. There were enough side players that even though I was right from the start on the who-dunnits, it was a journey getting there. Every single person had some suspicious behavior, so I was thrown off the trail for bit, but it ended with my initial suspicions being correct—only one exactly in the way I suspected, though.
I enjoyed my time besides some of the descriptive meanderings!
I am a fan of Kate White's books and usually love them but this one disappointed me. It was a really slow burn until halfway through. The main character was all over the place trusting her second husband on one page and then not trusting him on the next. The main character Emma really made this book unlikable in my opinion. I will still read Kate's books in the future because one bad apple in the bunch doesn't make the whole bushel bad. <Book metaphor there
Emma’s husband, Derrick, was killed in a seemingly random crime less than two years ago. Now, she has once again found happiness with her loving second husband, Tom. Emma believes she has finally found the perfect man, and is well on her way to living her perfect life when a police officer contacts her, telling Emma that new information has led them to reopen Derrick’s case. Now on edge, Emma begins to question the events of that day. When she realizes Tom has been keeping secrets from her, she soon starts to doubt her new husband, and begins to once again evaluate events from the past, hoping her secrets, too, will stay hidden.
I really wanted to like this but the ending had me confused and disappointed. I was hoping for more from the story.
I am a big Kate White fan and it took me a while to get to read this book. But I'm glad I did.
Told in Emma's POV, she details how she lost her first husband to a mugging/murder. Of course, she is a suspect, but she didn't have anything to do with it - she tells us.
Fast forward 27 months later. She is remarried to what seems like the perfect man. But he has secrets. Secrets she is slowly discovering and that make her suspicious. Renter the crime cops who never found the murderer of her first husband, acting on "new info."
What proceeds next is a twisty tale of misconceptions, lies, and love-gone-wrong.
4 stars to this great story. Thanks to Netgalley for the peek - although it wasn't a sneak peek since it took me so long to get to it!
A psychological thriller that had me flipping the pages. Emma's first husband lost his life in a random crime and she is doing her best to move on. She moves on with widower Tom and feels happy again with her second husband but the police come knocking at her door with questions about her first husband and all may not be as it seems. This one had me guessing and constantly pointing the finger!
Thank you #HarperPerenial and #NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Like everything Kate White writes, this is a domestic suspense. It leaves you guessing at hidden secrets and lies. It was fast-paced and twisty. I look forward to what is next by this author.
The Second Husband has a plot that is a dime a dozen. Even being overdone, it was still interesting. I love a dual time line and I also love a domestic thriller. It was solid and I would read her again.
For someone who loves her Oxygen channel, this was kind of like a bad episode of Snapped but with better plot twists. Did not see that ending coming.... poor Emma for all that she went through :)
I enjoyed the suspense and pace of this book!
I kept changing my mind as to who I suspected of what and who to trust!
How well do you know someone, even someone you love and live with?
That's what Emma tries to figure out. She widowed after her first husband is murdered, and then she meets Tom. She's in love again, picking up the pieces from her broken previous life.
But not everything is as it seems. When a detective comes knocking on Emma's door asking questions, her perfect world starts to crumble. No one is what they seem - not Tom's stepdaughter, who is living with the couple, not his work associates, and even Emma herself may be hiding something.
When Emma starts to feel threatened, she knows she needs to figure out exactly what happened the night her first husband was murdered, before its too late. But does she want to know what really happened? Or is it better left in the past?
This is a fast-paced thriller that will really leave you questioning EVERYONE'S motives. It was fun trying to guess what the answers were, and I was able to enjoy this book until the very end.
While I did enjoy reading The Second Husband, it felt a little like a redo of a story that's been told plenty of times before. I wouldn't have minded that, but I never fully connected with the characters. However, White's writing is on par, and I'd check out her next book.
This book is great! Would definitely recommend. Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This was an okay book. I feel ok like there were a lot of questions that weren't answered, so maybe those parts should have just been left out? Also, I feel the author tried too hard to get us to believe or think we knew who did it. The one character was pushed through almost the whole book. Also, a few things should have either been explained more or, again, left out. All in all an okay read.
Thanks you to netgalley, the publisher and author for the chance to read this advanced copy.
