The Second Husband by Kate White is available on June 28th. This is my first book written by Kate White. I look forward to enjoying more of her work. Kate has a talent for writing unexpected and stunning turns of events that keep readers guessing to the last page. (3.75 bumped up to a 4 ⭐ ⭐⭐⭐)
Thank you, NetGalley and Harper Perennial and Paperbacks, (Harper Paperbacks), for the opportunity to review this magnificent curvy book. Your kindness is appreciated.
WOW. I did NOT see that coming. What a twisty-turning plot thriller! I cannot wait to purchase this for my library. I have been talking it up and already have a list of interested readers!
I really loved this one, until the end! Perhaps maybe it's because it's an ARC, the ending will change at publication? It just felt like such an unfinished and abrupt end that didn't have the style of the rest of the book!
The Second Husband is a fast paced, page turner that grabs the reader from the very first chapter and takes them on a wild ride with twist they will never see coming.
After her first husband is murdered, Emma rebuilds her life and moves on until the police begin looking more closely and questioning his death. When Emma begins receiving warnings, she learns that not all is as she thought it was, and she begins to doubt everything, including her wonderful new husband.
Kate White has a way with words and the way she revealed information made me need to know what was going to happen next. By the end of the book, I was amazed by how well the different plots within the story came together and how well White kept up the suspense and kept me guessing about what really happened and who was responsible.
Kate White has done it again. I was a big fan of hers even back in her Cosmo days. I love both her series mysteries and her standalones. This is a standalone and it’s a great story. I highly anticipated it and was not disappointed!
What could have caused the police to re-open the cold murder case of Emma's husband? She was cleared as a suspect back then.
Did she marry again too soon afterward his passing?
Emma knows she had wished something would happen to her mostly abusive husband, but no one must know that. She did a pretty good job of faking her sorrow when he died.
Now that she was married to a successful man and a success herself, what could possibly have made them re-open the case?
Does Emma know something she doesn’t want the investigators to know? Or does someone else know something that she isn’t aware of?
Who can she trust to know her true feelings?
But is there really anything else to tell?
Who is the person behind the murder? There are many characters it could be.
Those are the questions that make readers of THE SECOND HUSBAND curious and turning the pages.
Ms. White keeps you guessing and wondering who the murderer is in this marvelous, twisty, hard-to-put-down gem. 5/5
This book was given to me as a PDF by Wunderkind-PR for an honest review.
I really enjoyed Kate White's last book, and was excited to see she'd come up with another so soon. I absolutely love novels in which the main character questions whether or not someone is the person they once thought they were. That being said, the ending completely disrupted my original thoughts about this novel. If it is updated prior to pub day, I'll absolutely go back and update this review, but cannot recommend the book in the state that it's in. The ending seemed incomplete and abrupt, and I have no idea what actually happened. A phone call came out of nowhere and I am still left wondering how the book ended. I'm hoping that there's a mistake with the ARC and did reach out to the individual who sent me the widget to let them know. I do enjoy Kate's writing and look forward to seeing what she comes up with next!
Thank you to Harper Perennial and Paperbacks, Harper Paperbacks and NetGalley to allow me to read this digital ARC fo The Second Husband.
I was very excited to read this book based on the description - I do love a good thriller/mystery book so figured I'd give this one a go. Many times I wanted to DNF. I did not find this super engaging, the MC Emma's husband dies and she starts a new life with her new man Tom. But the cops are back and look into her 1st husbands death. Sounds like a great premise but the story was just not engaging - and seems like the ending was misplaced and unfinished!
Emma is shocked when the police arrive in the night to inform her that her husband Derrick was murdered in New York. Now under scrutiny, Emma dares not reveal that their seemingly perfect life was less than ideal.
Two years later, Emma is in her first year of marriage to Tom. She is a data trend spotter, ambitious and independent. She is someone who spots irregularities. Tom owns his own company, is a wonderful cook, and is attuned to her needs. Life really is too good to be true. Until the lies begin.
With Derrick’s murder still unsolved, his brother Kyle believes she was after two valuable family paintings. New York City Detective Webster suspects Emma may have hired a hitman. Tom’s adult stepdaughter is living with them, straining the marriage. A woman is murdered at his company. When Emma learns Tom has had his eye on her even before Derrick’s murder, suspicion heightens.
The author establishes a pervasive uneasy tone ending chapters with cliffhangers and small revelations propelling this domestic suspense tale to an intensifying penultimate scene. The final chapter though is unexpectedly subdued as it ties up various story threads.
Kate White is an excellent mystery writer. This is a good novel. After her 1st husband dies Emma builds a new life with Tom. Now the cops are looking into her 1st husbands death again.
Was this ARC incomplete? The ending was abrupt and the last two lines of it didn’t make sense. Also, the book was a bit tiresome in the amount of material details that weren’t relevant.
This book fell completely flat for me and if it wasn’t for getting approved and leaving an honest review here, I probably wouldn’t have finished it. Super boring and totally confusing at times to the point I don’t understand what I just read??
A solid domestic thriller with a realistic setting. Following a recently remarried widow as everything in her life comes into question. This book did a great job of slowly unravelling Emma's life and casting suspicion on everyone around her. While at times it read like rich people problems I was totally hooked.
I love a good domestic thriller, but The Second Husband missed the mark for me. There was so much potential, but the story just didn't hold the suspense and thrill I hoped for. There were definitely some holes in the plot which I don't want to get too much into for risk of spoiling it. Like another reviewer, the ending was "off" for me and I will edit this review if I find that the mistake is on my end.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Perennial and Paperbacks, Harper Paperbacks for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I was very confused by my review copy and I will go back and change my rating if the review copy changes before publication. but...
But I did not enjoy this book. I had multiple issues with it, from the main character Emma, to the lack of tension or suspense, to the flimsy issue that the whole plot was based on. But I will not go into all of that because the last two sentences of the book literally made no sense--to the point where I think there was something wrong with my review copy. The book had no ending at all and the ending that was included sounded like two sentences had been copied from somewhere else in the book and just stuck on.
As it is, I would not recommend this book, despite the fact that I really enjoyed the author's previous work, The Fiancee.
After the murder of her first husband, Derrick, Emma Hawke has moved on. The first marriage wasn't very successful.
A second chance comes in the form of a new man, Tom. Emma marries Tom and is very happy. Until the police come knocking to ask Tom questions about the murder of Derrick.
In a twist, it turned out that Tom indeed knew Derrick, having attended the same dinner as Emma and Derrick.
A question of how badly did Tom want Emma leads Emma and the police to dig deeply into Tom's past.
This book reads quickly and the plot is solid. Kate White does not disappoint.
Kate White's "The Second Husband" is a wonderful domestic suspense novel that never lets up. What a book!
Kate White has written another totally engaging novel. Emma is restarting her life after her husband was mysteriously murdered. She is far from bereft after a disappointing marriage. Now Emma has a second chance, but nothing is that simple. That’s the setting for this engaging mystery. There are lots of twists and and Emma begins to question her marriage with her second husband.
I enjoyed this tremendously, just the right amount of suspense and a lots of possibilities for the murderer of her first husband. It’s clear that the suspects include both Emma and her second husband Tom.! The author pulls it all together and gives the reader satisfying closure.
Be sure to pack this for your vacation, great read.
Thank you Netgalley for this lovely read.
