There are very few resources out there for Hellenic Polytheism, so I'm always interested to check out any new ones.
This one is good, but reads very academic. For me personally I won't be adding it to my collection, as I don't see myself reaching for it as a reference material. This would be great for somebody trying to deep dive and do some academic work on Hellenic Polytheism, but for the average person it's overwhelming.
I can't really rate this fairly because this is not what I thought it would be, and I don't believe that I'm the target audience. I had trouble getting into it.
The secret texts of Hellenic polytheism by John Opsopaus PhD is a good book filled with history and lore about Hellenic Polytheism and goes into detail about the different gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece and how they were venerated as well as ritual steps to show devotion. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Ancient Culture and venerating the gods and goddesses.
This is a unique and rare work that discloses the philosophy and theology of the 14th Century Byzantine scholar Georges Gemistos (“Plethon”). A founding father of Greek scholarship that inspired the Renaissance, his private work, Book of Laws, provided an interpretation of Platonic cosmology with ritual programs dedicated to the classical Greek gods. Professor Opsopaus presents a comprehensive praxis for Neopagans that features the origins of Plethon’s philosophy–– the calendar of sacred times and the relevant deities with appropriate invocations, hymns, and rituals for day, month, and year. Besides the fundamentals for practice, the author discloses an invaluable guide for returning to the values of the ancient pagans––virtues and “excellences.” There is a wealth of tradition disclosed in this work, and most important, a way of life that is admirable and with this guide, attainable.
After reading the first chapter, I skimmed the rest and I think it’s better that I did. This book reminds me of an academic textbook which wasn’t what I anticipated when I initially requested it.
However, it does look well-researched, just not what I was expecting.
To say this book is remarkable would not do it justice. These teachings were forgotten or if possible removed from our history by those who felt the Old Gods were evil or not trustworthy. This book gives a doable and very straight forward model of worshi that is not all that difficult to do. It just takes time and effort and some decisions to start. I have read so many books on paganism that it is redundant in what Ive learned. This book is fresh! It feels real and finally coming out of antiquity to the modern era . The focus of many rites and worship is prayer but prayer that is explained. In other words you will know why you are saying what you are and who is hearing. Not scary nor loaded with modern memes it tells a tale that people of understanding and honesty might have followed long ago. This book is a one of a kind and it you are looking or just curious as to how to begin honoring the Dieties of long ago you will find a source that is remarkable in its simplicity and scope.
This is a well researched book regarding fundamental, yet difficult to understand, texts of hellenic polytheism. The Book contains eleven chapters ranging from topics regarding the ancient wisdom, the sacred calendar, hymns and theurgy. The author makes the information digestible. I am looking forward to picking up a final copy.
