Elin Hilderbrand dips into the supernatural in possibly her last beach read before winding up her career in that genre with The Hotel Nantucket coming out mid-June.
A tragic fire in 1922 killed the 19-year-old secret lover of the hotel owner and marked the beginning of the end for The Hotel Nantucket. Fast forward to 2022 when billionaire Xavier Darling restores the hotel to its previous glory, with help from Lizbet Keaton who is his general manager. Despite the full renovation, the locals still talk about the ghost of Grace Hadley who perished in the fire. Indeed, Grace is still haunting the hotel as she is not satisfied that her death was never declared the murder that it was.
Lizbet struggles with an inexperienced crew she must whip into shape to deliver that over-the-top service that Darling expects – and rewards with a nice bonus to any employee who is singled out in hotel reviews. A 5-key rating from hotel reviewer Shelly Carpenter is his goal as none has yet been awarded to any establishment.
An ensemble of characters unfolds the story along with Ghost Grace: Lizbet, who is recovering from a broken long-term romance; Alessandra, the front desk manager on the prowl for her next Sugar Daddy; Sweet Edie, a Nantucket girl who always goes the extra mile serving the guests from her spot at the front desk; Magda English, head housekeeper extraordinaire who was handpicked by Darling to head the cleaning team; and Chadwick Winslow, a rich kid who is redeeming himself from having done a misdeed by taking a menial job at the hotel – an eye-opening experience to how some people treat their hotel rooms.
The hotel team members are all hiding secrets that haunt them as they go about their day-to-day duties running The Hotel Nantucket. How will Lizbet open her heart to the famous chef who runs the in-house Blue Bar? How far will Alessandra go to get what she wants from married hotel guests and islanders? What could Sweet Edie have done to be the target of a blackmailer? How can Chad heal the wounds in his relationships with others and forge a career path for himself? Will their combined efforts bring about that coveted 5-keys rating? Will Ghost Grace’s death finally be vindicated?
Having long lived in Nantucket, Elin Hilderbrand has great insight about how things work on the island. At the end of the novel, she provides a bonus guide to all things Nantucket including lodging, eating, and adventure tips for island visitors. Her future involves developing a half-dozen projects in Hollywood. Rather than writing books, she hopes to be a book influencer like Reese Witherspoon and others who have their own book clubs.
My review will be posted on Goodreads starting April 17, 2022.
I would like to thank Little, Brown and Company, Hachette Book Group, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in return for an objective review.
Great setting and fantastic character development make this a page-turner. Typical Elin Hildebrand style of mixing romance and intrigue will make this another best seller
Such a good read. Elin Hilderbrand had me from the first page to the last. The storyline is compelling. Characters are well defined. Could not lay it down, really want it to go on further. I want to see what happens next year! Love Grace a very whimsical character.
This is a good, easy book to escape with about life in Nantucket. The hotel was brought back to its glory from the gilded ages, the tragic fire that killed Grace in 1922, to the success that Lizbet brings to it.
The storyline has many side pockets but it all comes together with the beautiful writing of the author.
Elin is such a talented author. Her books instantly draw you in. I wasn’t sure what to think about the ghost but it brought so much humor.
As a preface, this is not my usual genre of book, I tend to read Historical Fiction, Colonial History and Thrillers. This is also my first read of anything that Elin Hilderbrand has written, but will not be my only one.
Since we live on Cape Cod, Nantucket is well known to us. Elin was able to spin a story about the rehabilitation of an old hotel with a storied past, staff it up just before the summer season with normal people, many of which have lots of personal issues. She captures the reader with an amazing character development, while simultaneously adding some suspenseful challenges to the characters that keeps the reader rooting for them. Adding a ghost to the story adds a bit of lightness as she is the fly on the wall during job interviews as well as watching over all those in the hotel.
The major theme is Lizbet, the new General Manager of the hotel has to overcome a poor reputation of the hotel, hiring and training an entire staff while simultaneously meeting the new owner's challenge of reaching a 5-star rating from a travel blogger who has never given one. It is well worth the read and a great story, the reality of people's issues brings a sense of believability and keeps the reader engaged.
Well done!
I always look forward to summer - the pool, the sun, the drinks, and the new Elin Hilderbrand novel. It's synonymous for the season for me. This one did not disappoint! I always love the detail that makes you feel like you're there on the island and want to visit both at the same time. I loved the twist of the mini-ghost story and while there were a lot of characters, most of them were very well-developed. A typical five-star Elin read!
Rounding up to 3.5 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for this ARC.
I hardly read ebooks and prefer print. however, there are certain authors I read in ebook format if I can get approved! I got to 91% of this book and I didn't realize it was the end though I should have figured it out. The last 9% was the author's recommendations in Nantucket like the "blue book" in the book of places to go etc.
This was not the best book by her I've read so far but it was enjoyable nonetheless and of course set in Nantucket where most (if not all) are set. There was a ghost in the book that was unusual but you need to read the book to why this ghost was in the hotel for over a century.
It was a typical read set in a hotel and the people who worked there. However, close to the end of the book, things got very interesting and things I would have never figured out or guessed.
I didn't think it was possible but Elin Hiderbrand just keeps getting better.
The Hotel Nantucket takes us deep into the world of luxury hotels, a luxury it is hard to even imagine. A long-ago, hidden murder, a mysterious, unseen millionaire owner, and a feisty dynamo manager provide the ingredients for an excellent book that you can't put down.
And can I just say, I love a book where I don't figure out the ending until the end. The murder plotline is pretty wide open but there is another little mystery point I won't reveal that caught me off guard, that I never figured out, until the end. Loved it!
Of course there is a bit of romance and Lizbet's ex-boyfriend attempts to win her back, but the hot chef at the hotel restaurant has other plans. Lizbeth is a lovable protagonist and I loved the relationship between her and her employees. Hilderbrand has created a cast of characters for this novel that intrigue and seem familiar all at once.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Another winner from Elin Hiderbrand! I have to admit when I was given this early copy from Little, Brown & Co., I was excited but also hesitant to start reading it right away since I usually read Elin's "beach" book when it's released in June, but I knew I had to review it. An old, haunted hotel on Nantucket that has been restored to all its glory plus some, old relationships end, new ones begin, lots of secrets and a ghost. The story plays out on the island that we have grown to love and hope to visit one day. The last 10% of the book is Erin's recommendations on everything to do on Nantucket, including the best way to travel there.
A delightful beach read! Full of characters with secrets, romance, a ghost, and a luxurious hotel in Nantucket. Found myself cheering on the staff, as they worked through various conflicts and bumps in the road together!
I have mixed feelings about this book. I'm a fan of the author's previous work but I had a hard time connecting with these characters. I stopped and restarted reading a few times until I progressed straight through until the end. Passing the mid-point of the novel, I started to enjoy the read.
The early conversations about the hotel, relationships and problems took away from the story. While the golden couple splitting up after 15 years together was disappointing, I wanted to move on from that discussion and into Lizbet's next chapter. Emerging from that betrayal, Lizbet took charge of her life and the helm of the Hotel Nantucket.
Grace's appearance was endearing and humorous. Through her eyes, readers had the opportunity to learn more about the hotel's employees and guests. Get ready for a cuteness overload after meeting Louie and Wanda as they will steal your hearts.
Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for the early edition of #TheHotelNantucket in exchange for an honest review. Overall, I enjoyed the novel but I hope there are some changes made before publication. As I alluded to, there was too much time spent in JJ and Lizbet turmoil followed by an extensive hiring process and description of the new employees.. If those sections were streamlined, I think it would be a stronger story.
As with every Elin Hildebrand book, The Hotel Nantucket transported me to Nantucket right away. The descriptions of the island and the food made me feel like I was reading at the beach.
With that being said, the story fell flat for me compared to some of her other novels. There were a ton of characters and story lines to keep track of. It made it hard for me to get into the book until the very end. The paranormal element was also perplexing and didn't seem to add much to the book in my opinion.
All that being said, I think most Elin Hildenbrand fans will still love The Hotel Nantucket. Everything tied together in the final chapters. I especially liked Elin's guide to Nantucket at the end!
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!
This is Elin Hilderbrand at her best!! I absolutely loved the characters in The Hotel Nantucket. Hilderbrand does a great job of weaving the different characters and storylines together while creating the picturesque Nantucket setting. This book would be a perfect read by the beach or pool.
Well this book is in my top 3 Hilderbrand books ever! I loved it from beginning to end! I loved the references to her other books and connected with all the characters. I hope there is a sequel! I also enjoyed reading the blue book at the end! Bucket list…visit Nantucket!
The Hotel Nantucket is classic Elin Hilderbrand with a paranormal twist. You'll laugh, you'll cry, your jaw will drop and you'll sag, "did I really just read that?" This is sure to be an instant beach read sensation!

I love how by picking up this book you can be transported to Nantucket for the Summer. A rich billionaire has just bought the Hotel Nantucket with a dream to make it the first hotel to ever receive a 5 key review by Shelly Carpenter. Lizbet is the general manager and it is her job to make sure the staff is attentive to everyone's needs and provides the best service.
The hotel is haunted by Grace and she likes to play with the lights and music and make her presence known. She is also there to watch over the guest and provide guidance when needed.. This is the part that I liked the best is when she meddled in the guests life and made things happen.
Kimmer is a guest who moves in for the summer with her two kids and a dog. Her daughter Wanda writes an article about Grace that gets published and gets guest to flock to the hotel. Loui plays chess everyday in the lobby but this family becomes the heart of the hotel.
Such a beautiful heart warming story about love, finding your way, and relationships.
Elin Hilderbrand seems to just get better. I wasn't sure anything could top 28 Summers, then she brought us Golden Girl. Then I though that was the pinnacle and now we have The Hotel Nantucket! Once again, the author uses a ghost as a part of the story, but it's really accessible and not sci-fi at all. The Hotel Nantucket is an historic building that has been completely renovated by a mysterious investor. The cast of characters is varied, but perfect for this book and setting. Of course there is wonderful world-building of food, events and the beach. This si a perfect summer read, destined to become a Hilderbrand classic.
Wow!! This book has everything! Ghost stories, mysteries and romance all set I. The charming Hotel Nantucket. This was such a heart warming story of new beginnings and forgiveness. I loved this book so much!!
love this story set in Nantucket, a hotel renovation, a ghost, some mystery, some romance, very good read. I have read all of Elin Hilerbrand's books and she never disappoints.
