I feel like the release of Elin Hildebrand's latest novel is synonymous with summer and I want to stop everything and devour it the second I get it. I waited until Spring Break to dig into the Hotel Nantucket and it was thr perfect book for reading on the porch while enjoying my coffee.
However, it was far from my favorite read. I had read that there was a ton of call backs to older books I made sure to read some I had missed. However, unless you're a super fan and can remember details of all her books, these call backs can seem a little out of place. I also feel like there were so many stories she was trying to tell, it could have used another 100 pages to tell them. I wanted to connect with the characters but struggled keeping them all straight.
Definitely worth a summer read but wasn't my favorite
Hotel Nantucket is another summer tale written by Elin Hilderbrand which of course takes place on the island of Nantucket. This time Elin sets the tale in the historic and maybe haunted Hotel Nantucket which is rumored to be cursed. Enter Xavier Darling, a London billionaire who purchases and restores the hotel sight unseen. Xavier hires Lizbet Keaton as General Manager and instructs her to hire a staff that will impress a travel blogger, Shelly Carpenter, to give the hotel a 5 key rating - something that has never been done before. The staff all join the hotel for different motivations-redemption, boredom, greed, escape; but learn to value and love one another and maybe forgive themselves. The staff may not be about to impress Carpenter if Grace Hadley, a murdered chambermaid who has haunted the hotel for a 100 years, finally gets her revenge.
If you are a fan of Elin Hilderbrand, then this book is for you. The characters have so much heart even though they all are imperfect. I loved how each character was given a unique conflict that was resolved either good or bad. For all Elin lovers, there are multiple mentions of characters from her previous novels, The Beach Club, and The Winter Series plus multiple references to previous settings and events. There is even a surprise tour guide of Nantucket shared by Elin - hmm. Should I go to Nantucket soon?
This novel had everything I enjoy: a little romance, paranormal elements, and an underdog story. I highly recommend Hotel Nantucket. I would like to thank NetGalley and Little, Brown Company for allowing me to read an advanced copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
I received a temporary digital advanced copy of The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand from NetGalley, Little, Brown and Company, and the author in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The Hotel Nantucket, a historic hotel on Nantucket Island, is being renovated and reopened after years of neglect and disrepair somewhat in thanks to the hotel's ghost, Grace Hadley who died in a fire on the fourth floor of the hotel in 1922. The new owner hires Lizbet Keaton, a Nantucket local, as the GM of the building and is relying on her to receive a five key rating from a renowned hotel reviewer. The reviewer has never given five keys and with Grace haunting the hotel, will the Lizbet and her team be able to pull off the perfect hotel stay for this anonymous reviewer?
Hilderbrand continues her beach reads focused on her favorite island of Nantucket; like many of her other novels, I found The Hotel Nantucket to be a light read with fun characters and a moveable storyline. I didn't get much more from it though.
4 STARS for THE HOTEL NANTUCKET, out wherever books are sold June 14th, 2022.
I’m an Elin Hilderbrand fan girl. I’ve read every single one of her novels — it’s something I look forward to every year. Her novels are like a hug from an old friend. Sometimes I’m out in the world and get this sudden urge to read one of her novels. I had one of those urges last week and then I received this ARC in my inbox and couldn’t wait to dive in.
Like her previous novels, THE HOTEL NANTUCKET has an ensemble cast of characters, each with their own secrets and pasts that makes a delicious read. It centers around, you guessed it, a hotel. You get the POV of the staff, the guests, and even a ghost who has some unfinished business. Like her recent novels, there are Easter Eggs and hat tips to previous characters and establishments from the Hilderbrand universe that any fan of hers will enjoy. Like Golden Girl, there is a supernatural element which I believe will be the most polarizing aspect of the book — you’re either a fan of that plot device or not. Writing multiple novels about an island 30 miles offshore is a hard feat but making each novel it’s own unique story is what Hilderbrand does best.
I look forward to sharing this forthcoming title with our community and will keep it as a contender for our monthly book club pick.
Thank you to Little, Brown, and Comapny and NetGalley for an advanced copy of THE HOTEL NANTUCKET in exchange for an honest review.
So excited to read an early copy of Elin Hilderbrands latest book! I LOVED it, just like every one of hers. I was immediately sucked in and couldn’t put it down. Loved the Nantucket details, loved the storyline and loved the characters. She has such a gift at making you feel like you know every single character. Highly recommend!
Thank you to netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
I am a huge fan of Elin Hilderbrand books I have been reading them for as long as I can remember. And in each one I love looking for Easter eggs (or mentions of characters/places) I’ve read in past books. And this book did not disappoint. A character from my absolute most favorite Elin Hilderbrand book is in this one! I already love the premise of this book having worked in restaurants more than half my life. This book brings you to the hotel side of things. Which I find to be very interesting and probably one of the most dramatic hospitality jobs that could be out there based on the hours that people put in and the stuff they see on a day-to-day basis. This book was entertaining it was fun and as always in every book by Hilderbrand it makes me want to visit Nantucket.
Grace is a ghost, whose young life ended at The Hotel Nantucket years ago. When a new developer decides to renovate the hotel, Grace is determined to figure out who killed her. With the help of a young guest, Grace is finally vindicated, but is she ready to leave the hotel to the guests?
Great summer beach read!
What a delicious book! I devoured every crumb while savoring each detail. I dare say this may be my favorite Elin book. I love that we are back in Nantucket. I love the characters and their intertwined lives. Characters you root for—Lizbet, Edie, Chad, characters you love to hate — Alessandra, Xavier, JJ, this novel has it all. I was so involved in all the characters lives that I couldn’t wait to finish the book while at the same time tried to pace myself because I never wanted it to end. I, for one, would be thrilled if The Hotel Nantucket was the start of a new series or if we could see some of these characters come back in future stories. Really a great read.
Hilderbrand is my go-to author for beach reads, but this was not my favorite. I don't know why Hilderbrand is going for the paranormal element lately (like in Golden Girl), but it's not my thing. She does incorporate it well in this book, but I think it would have been better leaving Grace out and incorporating more of the dynamics of the other characters.
What I did like about Hotel Nantucket is the Blue Book at the end. Hilderbrand put together her own recommendations of Nantucket, which I appreciate the inside perspective because every time I read one of her novels, I always end up looking at AirBNBs and planning my Nantucket getaway!
Like Golden Girl, this story wove in some “light” supernatural elements, but did so without being over the top, the ghost portion felt natural in the story and wasn’t a dramatic departure from her other stories. I was worried this would be a switch to a thriller, but that was not the case at all. This story is definitely an extra treat for people that recently read Blue Bistro or The Rumor, there was lots of surprise character overlap!
Through the first 20% or so, it seemed like there were constant references to things that were meant to be trendy. It was very distracting, but did seem to be completely toned down through the rest of the book. But, overall, this was a very solid summer read and satisfying character line resolution for a lot of the past favorites!
Thank you to Little Brown and Comoany and Netgalley for ARC- a new Elin Hilderbrand book is always top of my anticipated book list and I was so excited to get this early.
I am an Elin Hilderbrand super fan. I grew up just north of Boston, and spent childhood summers on Cape Cod, with trips over to Nantucket for special occasions. These books capture the special energy of summers in this area - they make for great comfort reads.
I was really excited about The Hotel Nantucket. Like many of Elin's books, there are recurring characters and callbacks to previous books. In this case, there were references to two of my favorites - The Beach Club and The Blue Bistro, earlier novels from the author's career. Unfortunately, while I really enjoyed this book, it didn't live up to those earlier novels, and probably won't be making it into my top favorites list anytime soon.
That being said, it's still a really enjoyable read! My biggest quibble was that there was just too much going on - too many characters, too many mysteries, too many hidden secrets. I wish the book had just narrowed in on one or two stories; I would have loved more of the relationship between Lizbet and Mario, for example, or I think there's a lot more that could have been unearthed with Chip, his family, and the social issues at play there. Because there were so many competing storylines, it felt like none of the plot threads were fully fleshed out, and I was just somewhat dissatisfied when the book wrapped up.
Despite this, I did enjoy the book and would absolutely recommend it as a solid option for summer beach reading! If you're a fan of the author's other books, then you'll also enjoy this one. However, if you've never read anything by Elin Hilderbrand before, I probably wouldn't recommend this as a starting point - there are stronger options to be had.
Every beach bag needs a good beach read inside and Elin Hilderbrand's upcoming novel, the Hotel Nantucket, is a good choice. As a Hilderbrand fan for many summers, I was excited to receive this one from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review. I am always up for a trip to Nantucket, and on this trip, Hilderbrand takes us to a historic hotel that has fallen into disrepair. Renewed interest in the renovation of the old place reveals its secret past and the identity of a special guest, a ghost. The novel is peppered with fun and quirky characters and is a quick enjoyable read.
I enjoyed this one. It was better than her most recent book , Golden Girl. It taught me a lot about the hotel business and the little supernatural aspect was interesting.
Wow! Elin Hilderbrand strikes gold again with her newest Nantucket-based beach read! What a glorious escape from the rainy April weather!
This is the first time I’ve been granted an ARC of an Elin Hilderbrand novel & I could not wait to start it. Thank you to Little, Brown & Company for this little surprise in my NetGalley account!
“The Hotel Nantucket” features all the things-romance, mystery, supernatural circumstances, amazing characters & settings that will make you feel as if you’ve been transported to a vacation destination far away!
Similar to her novel “Golden Girl,” Hilderbrand introduces a supernatural aspect into her latest novel. We meet Grace, who was a chambermaid at the hotel a century ago. She is now stuck haunting the hotel after dying in a fire there in 1922. Her character allows us to see a glimpse into the rest of the characters’ lives as she flits about the hotel-a charming addition to the plot.
I loved Lizbet, the hotel’s new general manager, who has also recently experienced a broken heart. She was so likable & easy to root for, as she navigated returning the hotel to its former glory while avoiding her ex.
Then there was Kimber, with her two children & dog, who need a place to stay for the summer. We later find out she is a secret hotel blogger who is there to rate Nantucket’s new addition. Her storyline was woven so intricately into the book that I never suspected anything about her other than a potential stalker ex-husband. I was thrilled to find out Kimber’s identity & see her find happiness in the end.
While these ladies were my favorites, I also loved reading about Chef Mario, Richie, Zeke, Ms. English, Alessandra, Edie & the entire staff of the Hotel Nantucket. There was so much to unwrap & so many plot lines woven so well together.
I now hope for a sequel so we can find out how The Hotel Nantucket fairs in its second season under the ownership of Ms. English & Paul! I felt as if I was saying good bye to friends when I turned the final page, but Hilderbrand’s own “Blue Book” at the end was a welcome surprise! Add this to the top of your summer TBR list when it hits shelves in June!
I have never read an Elin Hilderbrand book that I didn’t love, and this one was no exception! The Hotel Nantucket follows, Lizbet, as well as some key staff members as they try to bring the once discarded hotel back to life. As the story progresses, you feel like you are with the characters and rooting for each of them. Every time I read one of her books, I immediately want to go to Nantucket!
Always love an Elin Hilderbrand book! Although when I first started reading it, I was a bit skeptical about the ghost aspect. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that I did enjoy the aspect of Grace the Ghost. Just the right amount fantasy, which gave an outside perspective of the plot, other than just the characters point of view. The perfect length and enough drama to be a page turner. Another amazing book by Hilderbrand!
There is no such thing as summer without a novel from the Nantucket goddess herself, Elin Hilderbrand, and this year she bestows upon us, THE HOTEL NANTUCKET....a juicy fun wild ride of book with a full cast of characters, including a ghost, a chambermaid that died inside the hotel in 1922, and who has "haunted" the hotel for decades, waiting for her murder to be acknowledged.
But....just because there's a ghost (a friendly ghost!) doesn't mean this isn't still an Elin Hilderbrand book. It's got everything you want; the food; the beaches; the romance; the hint of mystery; and a list of characters that you're rooting for even the ones that are behaving badly.... 😜🤫🤭
The novel tells the story of a woman, Lizbet, taking over the general manager position of The Hotel Nantucket in present day 2022 after it has been purchased by a London billionaire, and fully renovated, hoping to restore it to full glory and earn a treasured "5 Keys" review from a hotel review blogger.
Lizbet is tasked with hiring a full staff and overseeing the operations, and trying to maintain excellence in customer service, and Grace the ghost appears every now and then to cause a little hijinx. It's a truly fun read, I read it in a couple days; Elin never disappoints, I always start my summers with her novels!
Another amazing read from Elin Hilderbrand. She is the queen of beach reads. The Hotel Nantucket is just another superbly written novel to add to her arsenal. Pulling from her Nantucket roots, Hilderbrand paints a beautiful picture of life on the little island her characters call home. Another great one from her!
From the moment I opened my ARC approval email to the very last word of Acknowledgments, I was flying high in Hilderbrand’s #HotelNantucket.
When a mysterious British billionaire purchased the abandoned Hotel Nantucket seemingly out of nowhere, the island is intrigued. Reeling from a horrible break up, Lizbet Keaton interviews for the GM position-her new mantra is to focus on building the new. Xavier, our mystery billionaire, hires her and confides that he purchased the property solely to impress 2 women.
The century+ old hotel is steeped in history and scandal, and Lizbet is tasked with ensuring the Hotel Nantucket is the finest accommodations in town (actually, the world).
I adore Hilderbrand’s warm writing style. From page 1, the reader feels like they know these people. One of my other favorite components of her novels is the FOOD! The dishes are a character in their own right. Also a character in its own right: Nantucket itself. Hilderbrand transports me right into a dream with each book. The Hotel Nantucket is one to behold-this may give The Blue Bistro some competition for my top favorite!
I received an ARC of #thehotelnantucket by #elinhilderbrand courtesy of #NetGalley and #littlebrownandcompany
A fun beachy read. Ms Hildebrand has gone back to what she does best! There were surprise endings in this one. A fun book to read. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the sneak peek.
