I loved Audrey J. Cole’s The Pilot’s Daughter and couldn’t wait to read The Final Hunt. While the stories are very different, the writing is excellent for both and they are real page-turners. Begs to be read in one sitting… really tugs at your emotions, one minute I was breathless with anticipation….Another I didn’t want it to end….
Cameron Prescott is mourning her husband, John. She is in the cabin he loved to be in -- his retreat from it all when she finds an SD card in a book. That is when her nightmare begins. John Prescott -- the defense attorney who was mauled to death by a bear while hunting with his best friend. Could he really be The Teacher Killer? Eleven women? Simon -- John's best friend and co-partner at their law practice and hunting partner, was with John when he was killed. Now he is Cameron's attorney.
Detective Mulholland -- questions everything he sees in a case. Likes Cameron for helping John in his killing quest and possibly killing her first husband. But when Cameron goes to Alaska, she feels something is off with John being dead. Could he really be alive? This is a complex story that keeps the reader guessing at to what will happen next. I enjoyed it very, very much!
Absolutely gripping and has you not wanting to put it down. I did predict a part of it but even with that it was still such a great read. Would highly recommend reading this book.
A quick and easy read for lovers of crime thrillers and drama
3 months after the suspected death of her husband John, Cameron is visiting the cabin in the forest that John owned when she discovers something that makes her wonder if she ever knew him. Evidence shows he is, what Police named, The Teacher Killer. Cameron faces being charged with being an accessory unless she can clear her name
Audrey takes us from the streets of Seattle to the remote wilderness of Alaska, you can almost imagine the coldness yourself with the vivid descriptions she writes.
Short chapters and dual perspectives are my favorite kind of books. This thriller was an easy and quick read - straight forward and predictable.
Cameron finds out her husband (who died 6 months ago) was a serial killer all the while, she has a secret of her own. That basically sums out the entire book and had me intrigued. I wish there was some sort of twist at the end, but since it was such a quick read I still enjoyed it.
This book gripped me from beginning to end,
Such a great read , kept me pretty much guessing for a lot of it too which I love when I can’t figure out the main plot u til the very end and what an ending, loved this book ..
3.5 rounded up to 4.
This book was gripping and totally captures your attention! I did find the middle to lull a bit, but overall this was a fun and wild adventure.. I definitely find Cole’s books to be fast paced and electrifying, but at the same time the story lines semi-undeveloped. While a story line or sub plot begins to get traction, things move onto a new sub plot or story line and that is my only gripe with this book.
Otherwise I thought the story was so fresh, and unique and LOVED the rugged Alaskan setting. The twisted story of Cameron’s husband was dark and juicy. I never did piece together the big twist and really enjoyed that about this book!
All in all this was a solid thriller!

The Final Hunt is a standalone mystery/thriller about a woman named Cameron, who finds out that her recently deceased husband John was a notorious serial killer called The Teacher Killer. Cameron tries to keep her image and life afloat after the news breaks out, but things don’t really add up and she starts to question whether John really died during his hunting trip or not.
This book grabbed me by the shoulders and yanked me in! I picked this book because I was looking for something to keep me on the edge of my seat. And boy did Audrey J. Cole deliver. I absolutely could not put this book down and I almost finished it in one sitting. If only it weren’t for that pesky night of sleep we all need. The book starts out by diving straight into the plot so it is very fast paced, hence the could not put down part. It takes you on a wild ride, and literally because Cameron ends up going through the Alaskan Wilderness, which was a very nice visual and I enjoyed reading about the scenery. The ending could have been guessed but I gave myself a variety of solutions that could have happened, and I was not disappointed with the outcome. The only reason I gave The Final Hunt 4 stars was due to the fact that so much happens back to back that I felt Cameron couldn’t have possibly done all that she did in the time frame that was given during the book. But did I enjoy it and would recommend it to someone? Absolutely! This was my first Audrey J. Cole novel and it will not be my last.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC- I enjoyed the storyline and the authors style of writing. Many parts seemed to be a bit over the top for me, but it was still an enjoyable and easy read.
In Audrey Cole's The Final Hunt, Cameron's handsome, wealthy, successful husband is killed by a bear while hunting in Alaska. At first Cameron grieves as any widow would, but then she discovers what appears to be undeniable evidence that she's been married to a serial killer and didn't know it. A search for answers takes her to Alaska, trying to track down what he did, trying to stay a step ahead of the gung ho detective who's starting to think that Cameron's husband must have had a partner in his slaughters and that partner was his wife. Trying to keep Cameron safe is her husband's law partner and his best friend, but that proves more difficult than expected.
There is plenty to keep readers engaged, don’t you think? The problem is that while this is an interesting story, the author includes too many unbelievable pieces. For example, Cameron is a smart lady, owns her own dental practice, but not smart enough to protect herself from the obvious moves of the detective in charge of this case. At a certain point, there were too many of these to accept and that made it hard to enjoy--or believe--the story. I'd give the story a 4/5 and the development a 3/5. Since I have to round to one of those, it's the lower one.
I was drawn to the book when I read[author, Audrey Cole’s bio. In it she states that she and her husband took a five-day trip to Alaska so she could do some research for this book. They stayed at the ‘Sleepy Mountain Lodge’ in Tok a small town with the population of 1300.

Story stars with John and his friend are on a hunting trip and is attacked by a bear. His friend seeks help but arrive too late and John cannot be found and assumed dead.
Cameron his wife is upset but finds picture that link John to a series of murders which appears that he was the notorious “Teacher Killer”.
Cameron is shocked but soon considers that perhaps John isn’t dead but is hiding from what he did.
The reviews on this are mixed so I was surprised that it was more interesting than expected. The twist was and wasn’t expected!! It was a quick read.

Imagine finding out your beloved late husband was actually an infamous serial killer wanted for the murders of several women? It certainly put a damper on Cameron's grieving after the sudden passing of her husband John, who had the misfortune of being mauled to death by a bear. So beings the investigation into the murders and Cameron's possible involvement.
I read Audrey J. Cole's previous novel, The Pilot's Daughter, last year and really enjoyed it so I was looking forward to this one. I was hooked from the start and read through this pretty quickly. The chapters are short and before I knew it I was almost done. Towards the end the story did lag a bit. There was an awfully long trek through the snow and more details about wolf habits then I wanted to know about but overall a great story with a satisfying ending. Recommended for a chilly evening curled up with a good book.
Rating: 3.5 stars
A husband (John) goes missing after his best friend (Simon), reports he's been in a bear attack. Next thing you know Cameron (his wife) finds evidence at his cabin that he's connected to serial murders in Seattle. Cameron starts getting harassed by the reporters and the police start to think she helped him with the murders. She starts to think maybe he isn't dead after all...
The synopsis of the book drew me in especially when it states Everyone has a secret ... makes one wonder if the wife is really in on it or what else could she be hiding? I enjoyed this thriller and the chapters were short which made it easy to read. The only issues I really had were some parts just seems really unbelievable and Cameron starts to act recklessly in certain situations that made me shake my head and wonder WHAT THE heck is she doing??
The ending seemed a little ehh and a tad unrealistic. I did predict what was going to happen about 30% into the book, but that didn't stop me from wanting to find out what was going to happen. Overall I recommend if you're looking for a quick thriller read this is the right one for you.
Content Warnings: domestic violence
I really liked the general storyline, it was a very interesting idea. But like others have said, it is not an edge of your seat thriller. It is very predictable. The Tok, Alaska part of the book was a stretch for me. She's there for a "trapping expedition" but has absolutely no idea about Alaskan wilderness, no survival skills, pretends not to know how to shoot a rifle, and had no camping or winter gear with her at all and no one called her out on it. If she was there to actually track someone down in the wilderness then why did she not come prepared for that either?
That being said, I did enjoy reading it and would love to read a part 2 if the story is ever continued.
The Final Hunt was one of those books where I read the synopsis thinking "this will be a fun read" but in fact turned out to be the opposite. The premise is interesting enough: Cameron, a successful dentist, discovers that her husband, who recently disappeared, is actually a serial killer. She decides to investigate his disappearance and try to bring him to justice. The writing was ok but it dragged in some parts. Cameron wasn't a very compelling character, which made it harder to get invested in the story.
I had high hopes for this book i mean the whole husband dies but really is alive trope because I haven't really read a lot of them.
The Final Hunt fell really flat for me i saw every twist coming and nothing really shocked me.
The thing with her ex and even with her "dead" husbands best friend twist i saw coming after the first couple of chapters.
A thriller set mostly in the Alaskan wilderness in deep winter, complete with deep snow, frozen rivers and lakes, rabid wolf packs, an avalanche, ice fishing, and transportation by small airplanes and snowmobiles. The setting and the atmosphere and descriptions of the landscape are stunning.
I followed the main character in her search for the truth about her husband, John, supposedly killed by bears during a hunting trip. But Cameron suspects John might still be alive and sets out to find him.
Suspenseful action added to the Alaskan wilderness makes this a good read for armchair travelers. Because of the book''s ending, I raised my rating up a notch.
Great book. I enjoyed reading this. A smart villian and even smarter wife. A detective who's like a dog with a bone.
Read this book to find out how they all come together.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I just finished the book and I’m waffling between 3 and 4 stars but I think I have to ultimately round down because while this book was a quick, easy read and overall I did enjoy the plot, there were just so many elements to it that were too over the top, even as someone who is pretty good at suspending disbelief when it comes to books. Also, unless this is your first thriller, you’ll see the “twist” coming from a mile away. I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend this, but I also wouldn’t make an effort to convince somebody not to read it either.
WOW!!! This book was unlike any other book I have read, it starts with the sudden disappearance of a man who is later accused of being a serial killer and the impact that accusation has on his wife. What a unique story idea. I loved how the author was able to describe the different settings where it felt like I was in the backwoods of Alaska and at the scene of certain events. This book absolutely held my attention and I wanted to pick up my kindle to read more whenever I had a free moment. The only time I was disappointed was when I realized I was 98% done with the book and wanted it to just continue. Very well done!!! A special thank you to Audrey J Cole, Books Go Social and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book to review.
